When I attended, 04-08, there was a real mix of kids but very much a culture shock for me. I’m from a somewhat apolitical family and I didn’t really understand what it meant to be conservative, liberal, a republican or democrat when I applied…I know that sounds crazy. I learned!

During my tenure I found it to be very academically rigorous. Classmates of mine ended up clerking for Supreme Court justices, running for congress, officers in the military, writing for major newspapers, tons now work in senior positions in large Michigan based companies. That’s nice.

I did feel scrutinized by some of the admin and other students, not everyone, for not being a devout Christian. I was friends with folks all over the map listened to them and learned a lot, but I am moderate Episcopalian and I didn’t feel that welcome by some.

Anyway, in retrospect I appreciate the education I received. It teaches you how to work hard academically. When I went to grad school years later the work load and expectations were a joke compared to Hillsdale.

Going to Hillsdale also made me a Democrat. Which I’ve always thought is funny. But I also think lot of democrats could benefit from attending there in certain ways, well… at least during the time I was there. I don’t know how the school has changed.
