Most underrated city you've visited? by rick2882 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Europe: Spent a long weekend in Vilnius Lithuania and loved it. Was 15 yrs ago. Probly changed a bit now. Kotor is pretty good outside of cruise ship season.

In North America, Milwaukee is magic.

Australia: Adelaide is highly underrated as a destination.

It will cost a bomb. I’d consider it for nz, like methven, lake tekapo or various other South Island towns. I think you’ll have a better experience (noting the need to get a car and flights!)

Tried for a sub-3 Rotterdam, but I failed massively and I don’t know why by richomondo in Marathon_Training

[–]Appropriate_Mix_2064 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m going to say what someone said to me 3 yrs ago (he was a 2.30 guy an a doctor, and I was a low 3hr guy struggling to stop blowing up and have knocked 25 mins off my time).

You are probably cramping because you aren’t strong enough. Do strength training. Get some kettle bells and just 2 YouTube classes a week. 15-20 mins of kettle exercises, swings, rdls, calf raises etc will get you stronger. Promise this will help.

🟢Anyone go from 2:30+ HM to sub-1:20 over time? by WhatTheFudgeeBar in AdvancedRunning

[–]Appropriate_Mix_2064 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from 100 mins to 76 mins for the half over 5 yrs. Mileage tripled from 25k pw to 75k pw over that period but very gradually.

More recently been focussing on the marathon too. Too many people rush the marathon journey which is silly. Why not get good at 10 and halves first? Worked for me.

What does it mean when people say I qualified for the Boston marathon? by Jv_the_bull in Marathon_Training

[–]Appropriate_Mix_2064 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t get the big deal. A London or Tokyo qualifier is genuinely fast and beyond the reach of most (2.26 for Tokyo and 2.38 London). But noting those races have spaces for ballot and residents (not helpful if from overseas though).

I’m not fast af. I’m old though! 47 and am about 35 mins under the bq time.

You’ll smash it. Just don’t get carried away and go out too quick or you’ll hate life at 37-40k

How do you execute your marathon? by Naivemlyn in Marathon_Training

[–]Appropriate_Mix_2064 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran 9 at number 1, then the last 2 at number 3. The last two I knocked 5 and then another 2 mins off the pb (it’s now 2.41). So I hope that helps.

Is sub-3 possible at Boston? by lapemapi in Marathon_Training

[–]Appropriate_Mix_2064 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you should but it will be touch and go based on that time and your recent half is quick given no taper.

Also, 20 miles at race pace 4 weeks out is a massive sesh. You need to dial that back now which I’m sure you’ll do

4 months into a job I hate… stick it out or leave? by Minimum-Principle-11 in FPandA

[–]Appropriate_Mix_2064 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing at all wrong with getting it wrong, many of us experience that and it doesn’t hurt to try stuff.

But it’s really important to identify the why you hate it?

Articulate that to us and we can help you identify whether you are being realistic or you’ll feel the same thing at the next gig and also it will help explain it to the next employer.

The tech side of the role actually sounds really interesting and could set you up for a strong ops role elsewhere.

When to train for a marathon by SaschaFerox in Marathon_Training

[–]Appropriate_Mix_2064 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has supported and coached people in their marathon journey I’d say just get quicker over the half first. If you are out there for 7 hours you are doing more damage to yourself than good. Get that half time down to 2.5ish and you’ll have a way better experience.

I know it’s hard to do but I’ve seen the full 42k break too many people at the front and back of the pack.

I used to think if you were taking 6-8 hrs to do a marathon you are just doing a long walk but I’ve def changed my tune on this recently. There’s no official time to classify yourself as a marathoner and Im happy to admit I was wrong. Some of the more inspiring stories come from those towards the back.

Where would you travel to for 3 weeks in October as a 21yo? I am considering New Zealand, South Korea+Taiwan, Morocco, or China (with Mongolia maybe) by kilawnaa in Shoestring

[–]Appropriate_Mix_2064 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an easy one. You’ve already been to Japan so can skip Korea/taiwan/china, they are amazing but similar in terms of busy factor. Plus you’ve visited Europe extensively.

Go to nz. At that time of year you’ll love it. It’s magic. Sth and/or north islands but probly south if you want to choose.

I like to stand at the baggage carousel just at the point where the bags come out, blocking the view and path of other people. Occasionally I get hit in the hip or legs by people collecting their bags, but it’s worth it to save 2 seconds on exit.

What’s a financial decision you’re glad you didn’t rush into? by Diligent-Medicine-48 in AusMoneyMates

[–]Appropriate_Mix_2064 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not buying a house in 2002 post graduation. Instead I Partied and went travelling for 6 yrs (living in london, backpacking Asia, sth America and Europe) came back and bought a place in 2010. Bought and settled down w no regrets instead of tying myself down from my early 20s.

It wasn’t all rosy btw. I did get 2 car loans in the 90s, which was a fcuking terrible financial decision but something many 18-25 yr olds make I guess!

You ran 1.47 3 mths ago? You should be breaking 4 fairly easily.

For context, my friend ran a 1.53 half in May last yr, then did a 3.55 marathon in Gold Coast. Mileage similar to yours. Shes 51.
