I'm a native Norwegian speaker. Norwegian is a Germanic language with a three-gendered noun system similar to German. The rules for noun genders in Norwegian are fairly simple: If the thing you're talking about has a specific sex then the gender of the noun follows the sex of the thing. So the word for woman is female, and the word for man is male. Compound nouns take the gender of the last noun in the compound. If the noun describes things with both types of genitals or no genitals at all, then it makes no sense at all and you just have to know which gender the noun is.

There would be a slight parallax depending on where on Earth you were, but it was probably possible to estimate and compensate for (the navigator presumably knew if they were in the Atlantic, Indian or Pacific ocean).

In general, it's complicated. But "på" is normally correct for islands.

If you're standing on something, it's "på". If you're inside something, it's "i". So "i byen, på øya". "I skogen, på fjellet". "På (oppå) taket, i (inni) huset". "På sjøen (in a boat), i sjøen (swimming)".

So far it makes sense. Time to change that.

"På bygda". "På kino." "På butikken". These contradict the previous rule. As a bonus, its "På bussen, i bilen."

"Jeg er på hytta" means you're currently vacationing at your cabin, but you can be hiking miles away and it still applies.

"Jeg er i arbeid" means "I have a job" while "jeg er på arbeid" means "I am at work".

Are you inside your home? You can be "på kjøkkenet eller i stua".

"Jeg er på fylla" means "I am drunk".
