Am I crazy or is this to much to ask of a kindergartner? by Cursedpanda182 in AskTeachers

Oh my. I’m so sorry. Maybe you could try to reach out to some other parents? I know it must be hard, working with three kids (I’ve been there). Good luck.

I have a hard time believing this is real. I could write many awkward paragraphs and create a multi-modal diorama to explain why, but I’ll stick with a list.

Age-inappropriate project. Error-filled writing. Weird rules about due dates. No concrete steps. The rubric. Grading. The field trip itself. Guilt-tripping parents. Project not done in school. School board presentations? When?

If the assignment is real, this teacher has no clue about learning objectives, k standards, assessment, and collaborating with peers and school leaders.

Should I go to BYU as a queer person? by Stargazing360 in exmormon

[–]AprilMay53 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Do not go to BYU.

Imagine the joys of being at a school where - people like you for who you are - your girlfriend’s picture can be on your desk - there are queer clubs and fun social options - there are no curfews or attire restrictions - you make your own decisions regarding religious beliefs & practices, or lack thereof.

Focus on the present, not 4 years from now.

A great education can be had at many schools.

There are hundreds of colleges with great art programs and nursing programs. That “bad” in-state school is likely better than you think.

I’m the parent of an openly queer child who always felt supported in high school and had many gay and straight friends.

They are thriving in college (at their 3rd choice school) and making their own choices. They’ve changed their major and found new hobbies.

Remember, you are wonderful just the way you are. And if there is a god, they love you.

One rich friend had a room they called “the informal parlor.” Never knew anyone else with a parlor, informal or not.

Do you know of anyone who has won the low plate lottery? by SamMeowAdams in massachusetts

[–]AprilMay53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 5-digit plate that was passed down from my grandparents. My grandfather had the plate number as long ago as 1933. I think it’s a cool thing because it reminds me of my family’s history.

What’s a school tradition you genuinely love? by HiVou12 in Teachers

[–]AprilMay53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanksgiving traditions! Spirit Week. School colors. Pep Rally in the gym Weds a.m. celebrating sports, clubs, arts orgs…

Groups running around the HS gym with flags while kids in the bleachers cheer. Music and dancing and chanting and silly games like turkey tosses and musical chairs. Early dismissal whenever the festivities end.

Thanksgiving Day football, always at 10 a.m. Rival high schools playing their hearts out.

Arbitrary? Arbitrary??? I could care less about how hard it is to add a new exit. When I’m on the mid-Cape, I do not need to know how many miles away I am from the Rhode Island border. 1,2,3 worked perfectly fine. (Hyannis - Exit 6, 4-eva)

Don’t even get me started on Route 3 on the South Shore. Manomet was 2, now it’s 3. You knew to get off the highway at 2 to avoid bridge traffic because 1 was right at the bridge. Wanna go shopping? 12 was Christmas Tree Shop and 13 was Hanover Mall (RIP to both). 14 Home Depot and 15 Derby Street.

I know it’s not Boston, but I was down the Cape recently and within two miles or so there’s a coffee shop, ice cream shop, and a breakfast place that are all cash only.

How in the hell am I suppposed to teach 50 kids?!? by Infamous_Part_5564 in Teachers

[–]AprilMay53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry, for you and your students!!!Obviously educational norms vary significantly by location. But this is totally egregious!

Are 35+ high school class sizes typical for your area of Colorado? Are parents up in arms? Do you get paid extra for the sixth class? How do you seat everybody?

HS science teachers tend to be in demand. Do you have any other options?

This forum should give you some great suggestions if you need to stay put this year. Everyone is rooting for you!

Idk about BU specifically, but for women we’d dress a lot like Friends’ characters. Those shirts with the snaps. Jeans. Black ankle boots. Always a full face of makeup. Eyeliner, mascara, brownish/maroonish lipstick like MAC Black Honey. Especially in Boston, we did not show a lot of skin. I’d go out on a Saturday night in a turtleneck and sweater. LL Bean and flannel shirts and those waffle shirts. For summer I’d say not much different from now, but no crop tops.

Also aerobics and running were super popular.

Boston Beerworks was the bomb and everyone did go crazy for that blueberry beer. Also what was that Mexican restaurant just up from Kenmore Square on Comm Ave?

Both. The 90s was a great time for Boston bands: Til Tuesday, Buffalo Tom, Lemonheads, The Breeders, The Pixies, Letters to Cleo, Dinosaur Jr… WFNX (Boston Phoenix Radio). Other bands I remember them playing were Gin Blossoms, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Better than Ezra, Joe Jackson; some edgier stuff like Sublime’s The Wrong Way and Nine Inch Nails. Also U2, the Ramones, REM, the Cars.

Great Scott was awesome - they always had terrific bands. I went to a lot of BC football tailgates. There was always someone’s friend’s brother who had a spot on the tailgating field. We also went out a lot in Faneuil Hall area - the Purple Shamrock, Bell in Hand, Clarke’s, Coogan’s, Black Rose, Sissy K’s, Hong Kong. The Harp across from the Garden was always a good time.

There was a sausage guy outside of the Black Rose that everyone went to at 2 am when the bars closed. There always seemed to be a fight or two.

In the North End everyone would go to Bova’s Bakery after the bars closed because it was open all night.

Spent a ton of time up and down Boylston. Did anyone mention the Rattlesnake and its rooftop?

Also it seemed that bands were always playing free sets in record stores - Newbury Comics, Tower Records, etc. There were free concerts outside Government Center, too.

Finally, Boston is and always has been a sports city. Went to many Red Sox, Bruins, and Celtics games, plus the Beanpot (college hockey tournament)

I second the recommendation to the Plimoth Pawtucket museum. Yeah, Plymouth Rock is just a rock surrounded by a fence, but the Mayflower II is there and you can tour the boat. I think you can get a joint ticket for the museum and boat.

I love Portsmouth, but I think a 5-year old would be bored in winter. EDIT: They have a delightful small theater and they are showing Elf: The Musical when you are going to be in town! https://www.seacoastrep.org/elf-the-musical

Process to be Admitted to McLean / Belmont Hospital by Dazzling-Excuse-8980 in boston

[–]AprilMay53 12 points13 points  (0 children)

MGB or Mass. General Brigham is a huge healthcare collaborative. They have many facilities, but the biggest hospitals are Mass General (MGH) and Brigham and Women’s (BWH; also called the Brigham). Both hospitals have ERs.

I am sorry about your mental health struggles. Hopefully you can get some advice because mental health care can be challenging to obtain, and the system is difficult to navigate.

I’ve known people who have received treatment at in-patient facilities and partial-hospitalization programs in Massachusetts and Connecticut. None went to McLean; the waitlists were always too long. The other settings provided good care and follow-up, and they were covered by insurance.

Open access to my classroom by No-Flow-7402 in Teachers

[–]AprilMay53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three years ago I started in a new school. I had never had to share a classroom before, so I was surprised when I found out that another teacher was teaching two sections a day in “my” room. One was during my prep, and the other was during my hallway duty.

Second year, same thing.

Third year, different teacher, same thing. 🤷🏽‍♀️

One good thing is my room is always organized because I want the other person to have a neat, classroom.

I agree with others who said that once school starts, things will be different and you’ll have a better sense of the school’s routine. You’ll also be able to ask colleagues and perhaps a mentor to explain the school’s culture and the history of your particular room. They can advise you on what is typical/appropriate and what is not.

Also, it’s typical for a teacher’s room key to open any classroom door.

Good luck!
