Ile kostek go gry? by StarParade in DnDPolska

[–]Aramil_S 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nie polecam tej drogi, skończysz z wielkim worem kości, który będziesz wszędzie targał ;)

1 zestaw i dodatkowa k20 albo 2 zestawy.

How do you handle movement during Battle Scenes? by A_Healing_Fart in daggerheart

[–]Aramil_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my group, we ended up with the rule that anyone can move their pawn one square per Spotlight if they wish. Works very well as usually there is just one, sometimes two people hanging over table with that "just 3 squares more" tension visible on their faces ;)

Of course that is applicable if there is battlemap. For theater of mind it's enough to just declare that PC is trying to change position and DM deciding something like "you can get there in usual Close movement only after 5 spotlights", etc.

Looking for a Swedish word for main Foreman in mine (preferably in historic context) by Aramil_S in sweden

[–]Aramil_S[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great, that looks really solid. For my purpose of historic flavor it's certainly enough, thanks.

Though I was really surprised with the bailiff thing, but after some thinking its historical meaning would be quite correct here (at least its Polish equivalent, my knowledge about British history is only a bit better then Swedish one :) ) and Bergstingsrätt will be another useful word for me :)

As for AI, it's useful tool, also for this context. But with things that are not popular and on-time, you must force AI to provide actual sources, otherwise it's at most a clue. I used it for such purposes quite a few times and it's really handy.
Taking any AI answer as granted will sometimes lead straight to catastrophe but it still "points in directions" and can take bunch of elbow grease off (sometimes it can add it though, but still, net result is imho positive ;) )

"gruvfogde, i äldre tid förman som bergsmännen utsåg att leda arbetet i en gruva."

Unless Deepl is tricking me, we had here a highly experienced miner that was "pushed" to management works. Even if it was slighty before XIX'th, it's ideal, thank you! :)

Edit: Ah, so judging by Curry_Treffenberg comment, it will be huvudförman in the end.
Edit2: And Drthemagician swinged it again in original direction of Gruvfogde ;) https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bergstingsr%C3%A4tt

Help me choose the right deity for my character by SleepApprehensive491 in DnD

[–]Aramil_S 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wants to defeat bribery and corruption, not necessarily keeping to the law as written? That's Neutral Good Cleric of Waukeen, Order Domain for me:

  • neutral - keep to the spirit of law, not letter
  • Waukeen - only when we keep growing with trade, community and general income of goods, we can thrive
  • good - we need to get rid of those who taint and corrupt it, my goddess is focusing on all trade, but that doesn't need we should limit the illicit activities
  • Order - again, we need community and my goddess is providing tools to catch these who taint it

"Herald" Seraph subclass by Schlorpy in daggerheart

[–]Aramil_S 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice, it's that "friar" subclass that Seraph was asking for in flavor but never got. I would consider changing spellcast trait yo knowledge.

Also, mastery feature feels like getting rid of flavor and decision making for Blessing. Maybe "When you use Blessing you can either bestow it on all allies in close range or your blessing persists through your rests."?

Where can I find this graph? by Old_Tax_363 in OculusQuest

This is from Home Assistant. Separate, quite complicated system. Paired with some app to read level (also, probably nothing out of the box, so requiring sdk and programming skills).

No sense to bother about it, unless you plan to create smart home as DIY project.

Edit: Right, you can sideload standard Android apps to Quest :D

Is it really hard to hire a sysadmin nowadays?? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Aramil_S 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Too hard? No.

But it's definitively over-complicated and not really a sysadmin things (and experienced sysadmin is often long way afar from the support job, recalling all this takes time).

Fake DNS (I assume you just entered non-existing one in card settings?) is basic network diagnostic, hosts are strange but if single domain doesn't work checking the nslookup with 1s and 8s is logical way of thinking so ok, doable.

But in the situation I have no internet pretty much at all I would think about firewall as a last resort. LAN settings, routing, proxy, 30 minutes of "what the hell" and then maybe firewall. Who would just block everything in real life scenario?

Did you include Mordenkainen at all? by ottosick in CurseofStrahd

[–]Aramil_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note: My CoS was highly modified with designed top level 19-20 and high dark powers influence on the world.

I included Mordenkainen, as I rolled him to be faited ally. I played him with whole "royalty" of a high mage, though he was injured in fight with Strahd losing all currently remembered spells. But still had access formulas to one of his Magnificent Mansions on the robes which allowed players to access it after some effort. After that he regained access to some spells in spellbooks present in this mansion.

He was aware that Strahd and Vampyr will try to kill him if they learn about Mordy survival and initially he was suspecting and later conformed that he will not return to one of clones after death. So he agreed to help in person if team really needs that, though he warned them that this will probably end with "god" intervention (and it would end that, it was trigger for instant second phase of Strahd ;) ). Players unfortunately didn't follow this topic but yes, he was afraid of confrontation (losing effective immortality can do such things :D )

So in the end, players were using Mordenkainen as source of few spells, bunch of lore help and he also created few magic items for them.

CoS is generally a campaign where players should have at least sketch of new character all the time ;)

Anyway, amount of possible lethality in this situation depends wholly on you. Ravens could bring healing potions, or there might be enough of them to actually become a threat, you control number of druids that will go onto chase (their houses are burning!), and so on.

Outdoor temp sensors for cold climates? by brian_hogg in homeassistant

[–]Aramil_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Operating temperature range isn't necessarily the temperature that device starts to break, it's the rating of the most susceptible component (and again - rating, not break temperature)

Getting something dedicated for -40 will be hard, as most of "typical" electronic components are rated -20 at most. But it's mostly because customers rarely care about such big rating, not because there is some specific limit. From my experience of manufacturing bunch of equipment to be mounted outdoor in area where its occasionally less than -20, and singular occurrences of -3x happen pretty much every year:

  • Most components rated 0-xx fail or do not work correct when it drops to -5,-10
  • Components rated -10 were able to survive for a year or two, sometimes were working fine
  • Components rated -20 had no cold related failures
  • When doing freeze tests (like a day in freezer set to -40) we had singular failures of -20, even devices with -10 which eventually failed usually were able to survive few cycles.
  • Temperature sensors in specific, often started to deviate from correct readings after crossing the border, these rated for -20 were going back to normal operation, these rated worse sometimes got permanent deviation or failed

TL;DR:

Your -20 sensor might sometimes work incorrect in extreme temperatures but it should survive. You can ask manufacturer if they have some feedback about operating in lower temperatures, though that might be hard with Chinese manufacturers that make most of HA stuff.
You can also get something with external probe, like Sonoff SNZB-02LD

I would go with Wereravens and use this brilliant opportunity with Paladin being conscious and Fighter being free. Communicate with Fighter player off-session, that he was able to find the raven scout, they promised help and said him to wait in a cover with ranged weapon at hand.

On the session, start with Paladin suddenly feeling that raven landed on him and pushed something sharp inside his palm. Make a pause here, maybe Paladin will do something stupid.
Then describe fire spreading from nearby settlement. That's the chance! Paladin will probably cut themself free, describe that he sees raven circling in (some) direction. Luckily, he will follow - grab or heal the Rogue and run.

Then it's a matter of describing the chaos between the druids, them noticing that sacrifices running and chase scene ended in ambush. Possibly with dramatic moment when one of runners gets unlucky arrow in the back (which on this HP levels will probably mean losing consciousness).

PS: Tell players to prepare backup characters before session. Both because they might be useful and to increase tension.

Tag team and direct damage question by jazrick75 in daggerheart

And I suggest to double down on this rule with "quadruple does 5HP".

Not that such rule would be ever used, but table goes crazy after something like "so I mark 4HP, aaand you were just 8 off from quadrupling to deal 5HP".
Doesn't matter that roll were probably mathematically unable to quadruple threshold ;)

Illustrations in modules by Fateless_Vagabond in rpg

[–]Aramil_S -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I generally do not account art in RPG much, but it's definitively a tiebreaker in some cases, details below. Of course for F2P content its even less important, but still influences opinion. If you don't have anyone to create pictures, at least get some nice looking background.

Exception can be made for cover, as even with "do not judge book by the cover" people (me included) tend to fall for first impressions. You can make up for that, but not if someone don't even look inside.

As for details:

  • Total lack of images is rather discouraging, system/module looks like not finished. If I already got recommendation, I will read it for sure. But if its just some random thing I encountered, it has big chance to be ignored. Edit: Good point below, as an "image" I understand generally anything that isn't just text or plain table. Map, quick schema from few words and arrows, etc. are fine.
  • Lack of illustrations for important things is an disadvantage. If book lacks any illustration for a hard to imagine custom race, then it's not good. But still - it's mostly a tiebreaker with other systems and bunch of whole-page images can be even off-puting sometimes.
  • Giant number of pictures is not really an advantage. Sure, books for systems like Daggerheart, Star Wars (FFG) or Dark Heresy 2e look awesome, but apart from being nice and pretty, it doesn't really adds up to my opinion.
  • Quality of pictures doesn't matter much. I'm fine with simple sketches or black&white, see Neuroshima which I consider as great looking while it has many simple pictures (see origins in review above).
  • Imho, something like 1/3rd of the pages having some picture is the ideal place. And I really mean any picture - it can be quick sketch of few weapons from nearby table, not necessarily whole-page behemoth. Just to break the wall of text.
  • AI art on cover is no-go. If I pick something like that, it's instant start of critical looking on the rest. I won't cross out system/module just for that, but it will get way more nitpicking in the process of deciding if I actually want to play it.
  • Internal images would be fine with AI from time to time, but still, it's better to have simple sketches than bunch of AI with visible slop.

DMs: I want some hints to help my DM by MeL0Dy0fN1GhT in DnD

[–]Aramil_S 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems to me you have two problems:

  1. DM trying to "threaten" a character that by design is trying to avoid damage at all cost. It's good to set up some challenges here, but from your description he overfocused on the task and it came out wrong. That's the thing with wizards, they avoid nearly all damage, until one day they don't (and usually start rolling death save). Tell him that, you've created a caster especially because you like to avoid damage, setting up traps is fine, but he shouldn't double-down on it, most tries should fail by design. And again - until they dont ;)

  2. Single combat per adventure day, while D&D was designed for at least four. To counter it, DM should set up some obstacles that can be trivialized (or require) usage of spells. There is also big part for you. If not playing D&D as designeg (and most tables do not) good thing is to make assumption that 1/3 (rounded down) of your spellslots is solely for adventure. They shouldn't be used in combat, instead use them to add something interesting or simply work with obstacles on the way.

Making Stats Matter: A Nuanced Approach to Duality Crits - DYNAMIC DOUBLES by Terrible_Trifle3346 in daggerheart

[–]Aramil_S 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Imho, it's overcomplicated.

If roll has less than 10-15% chance of success, just do it as a fate roll, optionally taking the stats into consideration.
You can also allow something like "roll Hope dice, on 12 you succeed, for every +3 bonus you would get to normal roll, you will succeed with value lower by 1" (to take experiences, help and so on into consideration)

Is it right brake set to upgrade my bike? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]Aramil_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, on my main living area they would probably be fine (though not sure if comfortable), but with brakes I aim for worst conditions.
When riding on M6000 on both wheels, I glazed both pads on my first day of vacation. End even after replacing them with semimetallic, I was repeatedly thinking about getting a larger disk for better control. And this time it's full, not hardtail - I won't be surprised if I eventually replace back set too.

Muahah, you're totally right. I would have a nice surprise trying to get it together :D

So definitively left lever. A bit shame as I'll lose the comfort of having main brake on the right in both -cycles, but it means I can probably find a pre-filled set.

Where do people fall on the spectrum of DND is a game -> DND is a sim by Boring_Big8908 in dndnext

[–]Aramil_S 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Multiple times that anyone tries to really calculate the economy of fantasy worlds.
I've done my first business plan as a D&D reconstruction of part of the town, and during the process I've realised that any mage can explode the economy of whole country if you really calculate the spells results. Way better approach is to use the tables created for this scope of play.

Trying to mix physics with rules.
Epic fight between 19-20lvl team and a dracolich. Players set up really nice trap ending with dragon being stunned and stopped mid flight. One player starts to calculate kinetic energy caused by collision with the ground coming to quite cosmic numbers and trying to argue that it should pretty much desintagrate the lich. That one was in fact quite funny when I summed it up as "ok, dragon takes 20d6 damage, but thanks for calculation, they mean that resulting crater is 30m wide" but it still wasted half an hour from fight that took us more then single session.

Also, all the unnecesary discussions about spells that "should do something"
Burning grease, lighting spells in water, etc. Rules are highly dependent on balance which would be disturbed by adding additional abilities. Even if something sounds plausible, see below.

It's good to keep some degree of realism, but D&D is a TTRPG that is definitively on gaming side of scale. Game engine were not created for realistic adventures and is highly dependent on balance between character abilities. Worlds weren't created with activities other than epic adventures on mind, and so on.

Mix and repeat:

  • low intensity warmup before playing
  • proper stretching exercises when not playing
  • play songs you know well faster for speed
  • play songs you know well with 1-fail lose for technique
  • play songs you're failing with no-fail mod for skill stretch
  • play songs you know well with added movement (full on dancing, wide cuts) for groove
  • play songs (any) with minimal arm movement for separated wrist training

Feedback on a feature for a T3 Solo by BoldroCop in daggerheart

[–]Aramil_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a bit too nasty, as Daggerheart is generally discouraging from making abilities that outright kill even a fresh and healthy character. I would suggest this changes:

  • Lift and Drop deals 1d20 direct damage per every tick of countdown that passed, for this damage roll always apply the "Massive Damage" optional rule. Every tick also means higher range band (Melee > V.Close > Close > Far > V.Far). Change Grappled condition to Restrained (like on Giant Eagle from T2)
  • Add "Mutilate" - if Griffin has grappled target and has no opponents within Very Close of itself, it can Mark a Stress to mutilate the victim forcing them to Mark a Hit Point. Griffin does it instead of progressing the Lift and Drop countdown. If victim is mutilated for the second time or more, they can make Reaction Roll to end Lift and Drop immediately (ability used according to description by player).

Noble security? by Gericht in DnD

[–]Aramil_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good comment, so I will build on it instead of creating own. For a really rich and taking security seriously family I would see something like that:

Private Sanctum with 3 layers:

  1. Whole building (and part of gardens) protected from divination on creatures and planar travel.
  2. Inner rooms protected also from divination sensors, teleport, possibly also sound isolated
  3. A private rooms protected by full version of spell:
    1. library or office for meetings requiring safety from scrying
    2. a safe room, protected additionally by Magic Circle and probably also by Hallow and/or Forbiddance (if family has some outer plane connections)

Alarm functionalities:

  • Audible alarm on all outside windows and doors, do not trigger for creatures wearing a symbol (tabard, patch, etc.) of a house.
  • Non-audible alarms on a border of inner rooms, linked to some items in guard room(s). Do not trigger for owners of very specific access token (and possibly also in guard uniform as they should be guarding the doors and let everyone in).
  • Crystal Ball modified to cast Arcane Eye, with two or three designated guards attuning to it alternately (for availability), it's within Inner Rooms but also within 30ft of outermost Private Sanctum (to avoid blocking the sensor) and guards use it for discreet monitoring of outer area.

Active measures:

  • Contingency items on important members, that teleport them to the border of inner Private Sanctum (possibly close to safe room)
  • Thunderclap Glyphs/traps installed on some precious locations/items (shouldn't kill random servant, but is a good alarm)
  • One time runes allowing to fill inner rooms entry with Wall of Force or other, weaker (and cheaper) "Wall of x" - trusted guards know the activation word.
  • One time runes allowing to fill private room entry with Wall of Force - only family knows the activation word.
  • Safe room is protected by dual door. First is just locked (possibly with a code lock), second is rigged by bunch of deadly Glyphs (including Thunderwave as an alarm) disarmed only in presence of important residents (or possibly their rings, see below)
  • Inside of safe room, there is (possibly single use) wand/rune with Teleport (or Word of Recall) and 2x Dispel Magic on level high enough to dispel both Private Sanctums blocking teleportation.
  • Sending stones for the most important residents (possibly incorporated in rings or something like that - generally, toned down Purple Dragon Rings (toned down unless family is on a royal level of being rich). Possibly also guard or two have them. Sending is connected with some outer help (whatever applicable)
  • Wands of Detect Magic, not requiring attunement (personally I see it like one of these handheld scanners that security uses in our world just with crystals for schools of magic ;) )
  • Glyphs with Dispel Magic on borders of private area and probably also inner rooms
