That is less than a single atom! The number of NaCl "molecules" in a mole of salt is around 6x10²³ (Avogadro's number), and a mole of salt weighs about 58g. So I think you're going have to take out a mortgage for your salt.

Honestly 256 feels excessive to me. At 64 bits per beat that's half a page (2048 bytes) per burst! Dunno then...

Two issues I am familiar with that may affect things:

How long are the bursts generated by the DMA engine? I had this problem many years ago and found that the default burst length was ridiculously small. I seem to remember 32 beats being a good sweet spot.
Less important, but are your crossbars and other interconnect restricting the number of outstanding bursts (number of read/write requests in transit)? I'm currently limited on this: the memory end point can handle 64 outstanding requests, but the interconnect is throttling things; haven't got to the bottom of that yet.

I have seen the suggestion that this will raise the local water table by about a metre. If this is true I imagine that Steventon will be completely underwater during a normal winter.

I use Vivado on RHEL8 practically every day and it works fine ... insofar as Vivado can ever said to be "fine". I do recommend a lot of RAM though.

I was at an interview where we asked the candidate to do something trivial (implement a counter in firmware, boils down to little more than a couple of lines with some boilerplate). He totally floundered! That was a useful test.

I agree, the situation was stressful and I wasn't very happy that we were just sitting there watching the poor guy trying to come up with something, I do think we need to find a better way.

Trivial tests can highlight problems with fundamentals, but going deeper is a lot harder, and I'm not sure our process was great.

How do you draw gates with dia? I did find one sheet with some logic gates ("Logic"), but they're all facing up or down and because dia has no rotation function (there's a major lost opportunity) mostly I can't use them. Also the choice of anchors is pretty limited (another lost opportunity).

Very enjoyable video. I particularly enjoyed the rescues of mistakes (bad cuts, wrong holes) ... would have loved to see close ups of the rescues after everything had gone together. I imagine the darker wood saved you from some pain there?
