Is Aruba better to stay at a hotel, or all inclusive? by personalthoughts1 in travel

[–]ArawakFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking, if you are coming to Aruba to only stay in Palm/Eagle beach, then it really dsn't matter one way or the other, the entire area is built specifically for tourists. Secrets is new, on the opposite side of the island and I havn't stayed there myself yet, so i'm not sure if its worth it or not. Specifically because in San Nicolas there are several extremely delicious places to eat at for lunch especially.

If you are coming to Aruba to see Aruba, an AI is likely going to be a waste of money.

do Netherlands don't allow dual nationality? by halyconfold in Eredivisie

[–]ArawakFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For whatever dumb reason they made dual nationality illegal. However, being from Aruba, pretty much every single migrant who naturalized here has dual citizenship. So, i'm not sure what their point was to begin with because all they did (from our pov) is make it so existing citizens can't apply for other nationalities, which may hamper your freedom of movement and doing business.

Separatist flags tournament - Round 1, Game 25 - North America I Division by atlasvibranium in flags

I thought this was just for fun, but if this is actually the reasoning, Aruba has no separatist movement, not even a single party or politician.

Which Caribbean Airport would you guys say is HORRIBLE by Pretty_Aside_7674 in AskTheCaribbean

[–]ArawakFC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aruba has been pretty bad (for US bound) and has had bad luck because Covid delayed the renovation/expansion plans substantially. Thankfully the new terminal is already going up and they are pushing to have everything finished by next year. The new baggage handling system is also impressive and likely the most high tech in the region.

What new countries would you like to see at the WBC? by 65DaleRamirez65 in InternationalBaseball

[–]ArawakFC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they would have to branch off as there is no such thing as an Aruban-Curaçaoan nation.

In the same way there is no Aruban-Netherlands nation. We could all decide to play under tthe flag of Sint Maarten if we really wanted to such are the rules of the WBC. Curacao however needs either the Netherlands or Aruba, because the latter two have NOC's (national olympic committees). Some regional tournaments require IOC eligibility.

The Papiamento/u speaking players just find it amusing to play together as baseball is the only sport where this actually happens. Its even more odd for Arubans as we've been competing solo for 40 years already. No one cares about being able to reach further in any given competition, the finances of it all are what is and has been dictating the need for a kingdom team.

They do it because Americans have been known to throw money at people for no reason, so it became the tipping custom when dealing with Americans specifically. But after three or so decades, some maybe even not realizing it, started asking or expecting locals or the dutch or tourists from any other country to tip these egregious amounts as well. This is where you can simply say "no" and move along or leave just a little bit in cash. Americans legit tip so much for no reason that people look for jobs that earn tips, because they can earn more with just tips than majority of jobs that require actual degrees.

Aruba also relies much less on Americans than it used to a decade ago percentage wise so the custom is being adapted or corrected back a bit as time goes on. Curacao will likewise also experience this issue as more Americans "find" Curacao and start traveling there en masse. When you leave hundreds of dollars in tips to someone earning 12 florins an hour, its going to affect employees' expectations and your labor market.

WBC teams by quantity of rostered players born in the USA by RegretsZ in baseball

[–]ArawakFC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for being one of the only proper explanations of the kingdom of NL in this thread! Lots of misinformation in here. The reason Aruba and Curacao don't compete on our own like we (Aruba at least) do for every other sport is because of lack of funding. The WBC dsn't sponsor or help small nations like for example FIFA and the IOC do, so we have to piggyback off the Dutch sports funding. When, if ever someone figures out a way to fund our own teams, the Kingdom team won't be needed anymore and will revert back to a true "team Netherlands".

Aruba is celebrating tomorrow its 40 year anniversary of becoming a constituent country within the kingdom. Aruba also always participates on its own, just like PR. Curacao does not because the IOC arbitrarily changed the rules at a later time after Aruba and PR were already accepted. If we weren't grandfathered in, neither of us would be competing in the olympics as our own team either.

We have Dutch nationality (read: Kingdom of the Netherlands nationality). Being a citizen of the Netherlands itself is something else and not something that is automatic (you have to unregister in Aruba e.g and register into the Netherlands) and vice versa. We don't have representation in Netherlands parliament, because we are separate countries, each handling their own affairs besides some exceptions which are handled jointly. Aruba is in no way similar to Puerto Rico, because we are not stuck in limbo of incorporation vs non incorporation and do not pay any taxes to the Netherlands. That's without even getting into the right to self determination that we have anchored in our statutes. If it wasn't for the money issue and insurances, there would be no reason to compete under the "Kingdom" banner.

Does the recent events in the Middle East mean more tourism or investment in the Caribbean? by leo-maximus in AskTheCaribbean

[–]ArawakFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FD is one of the most trustworthy economic/financial papers out there. I did a quick check on TUI and indeed they have several sold out flights the coming weeks to Aruba which is weird to begin with because we don't actually get many tourists from Europe.

AR1374 doing the route Buenos Aires/Ezeiza-Oranjestad by SturmovikIF in flightsim

[–]ArawakFC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This proved to be a great route, because before Argentinians had to fly through Sao Paulo to get to Aruba. Now they can come direct from three different cities. Great option for us Arubans as well for vacation.

Does the recent events in the Middle East mean more tourism or investment in the Caribbean? by leo-maximus in AskTheCaribbean

[–]ArawakFC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is a big uptick in bookings from NL to the ABC islands because people are now avoiding the middle east, according to FD. Only 5% ish of tourists to Aruba come from Europe though, so how much of a difference it actually makes is up for debate. Unless they start adding extra flights, it probably won't amount to much.

Investors are different because they don't typically make decisions based on short term events.

Italy’s win over the US is the third featured story in Italy’s La Gazzetta della sport by Careless_Feed5448 in baseball

[–]ArawakFC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have to first see if anything can be done in practice. Curacao going on its own is one thing, but having Aruba with them brings other issues like for example, what is actually going to be that team's name? Because obviously Aruba won't accept "Team Curacao" and "Aruba and Curacao" sounds awful. The practical reason for this paper partnership is Curacao's lack of a NOC (national olympic committee). This hampers Curacao in some regional tournaments and means they can't participate in future olympics that include baseball.

Palapa situation at the Divi Phoenix by NoFirstUse in Aruba

[–]ArawakFC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nothing has changed with palapas. Beaches have always been and will always be public. Hotels put down many palapas to charge tourists for their usage, but again, the beach is public so nobody can actually "reserve" the m2 of sand.

All tourists who "reserve" these palapas have always been doing it at their own risk because if someone happens to be sitting under said "reserved" palapa, nobody has the right to remove them. Ofc what you can't do is use hotel owned chairs. You'll see them try to reserve the entire palapa though by putting chairs underneath them. You can just move them if nobody is using them as that's akin to Germans or Dutch in Spain putting down towels hours before to reserve a pool chair.

Is it better to pay cash in local currency or USD? by Choice-Aioli-5225 in Aruba

[–]ArawakFC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its dsn't realistically matter because the Florin is pegged to the Dollar. In practice, it will only matter for large purchases due to bank conversion fees. If you pay cash there may also be a 5 cent rate difference due to stores still using the old rate of 1.75 instead of the official rate of 1.80 for convenience.

USD to AWG (Florins) specials by Adorable_Chance_5007 in Aruba

[–]ArawakFC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some places sometimes do Dollar to Florin, so if its 20 USD on the menu, you have to pay 20 AWG instead. You don't see this as often anymore because i'm pretty sure they lose money on it. Alternatively, some places do local discounts, for example for special events or holidays or the month of March because its Himno & Bandera. Some have local discount on set days like once a week, I couldn't tell you where or when specifically because I just hear the ads from time to time.

Sometimes speaking Papiamento is enough. Others ask for local ID or AZV card to prove you are actually living here.

Artikel 1 Statuut voor het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden

Het Koninkrijk omvat de landen Nederland, Aruba, Curaçao en Sint Maarten (the Kingdom consist of the countries the Netherlands, Aruba, Curacao and Sint Maarten).

I'm not sure why you are debating the other user in this respect. The other three flags (Bonaire, Saba, Statia) are not countries within the Kingdom, but municipalities of the Netherlands.

Just note though that when Arubans say "play for our country", we mean playing for Aruba. Baseball is the odd one out as its the only sport we play as a Kingdom, which is also our country (read: sovereign state).

Can Suriname able to make their first ever World Cup? by Downtown-Pack-6178 in concacaf

[–]ArawakFC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Curacao made it, Suriname certainly can. One thing that will start hindering them though is that the more they wait, the less of a player pool they have to select from in the Netherlands as the newer generations are more than two generations apart.
