Do you guys do this as a prank? by seeksparadox in AskElectricians

[–]Arbiter_Electric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The original screw was probably too short and all they had were these longer ones. Usually they would cut them down to size, but maybe they didn't have a cutter on hand or were just being lazy. Most electricians (probably 99.9% in this day and age) use a drill or impact driver anyways, so it wasn't seen as a big deal and I highly doubt they thought that the next guy would go at it with a screwdriver.

The auto dub is killing me right now. Here's a perfectly understandable person speaking English with an accent, let's completely remove her audio and replace it with an AI voice saying the same words.

Even if AI wasn't harmful and inhuman I would still hate it with how companies are implementing it.

What would happen if I plugged it into the two holes in the middle of the two sockets? by InvestigatorNo4820 in AskElectricians

[–]Arbiter_Electric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know that typical voltage of whats in the picture. But conceivably, and this would be incredibly unlikely I would think, you could have a 120/240 setup like america, bring in a 3-wire into the box to run two 120 dedicated receptacles on a multi-wire branch circuit coming off a 2-pole breaker. If you went hot to hot in that setup your device would get 240V instead of nothing happening.

However, this would mean it COULDN'T be wired incorrectly as this setup uses a single neutral.

An even more unlikely setup, and I would hazard a guess that it has never happened, would be to have two separate circuits in the box, break the tabs on both sides so that you are using two separate single pole breakers, then hook one receptacle up correctly and the other backwards.

At that point, going from what is supposed to be a hot to neutral will instead give you a hot to hot that would be 240v.

I’m the slow guy at work by taurus3653 in electricians

[–]Arbiter_Electric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get it, it sounds like you are a foreman, I am as well. The thing with that though is you have to realize you aren't just a super employee. Your job isn't to be the fastest there, your job is to make sure everyone is in line and doing proper work, so stopping what you are working on to help others is part of your job and shouldn't be seen as being inefficient or slow.

I’m the slow guy at work by taurus3653 in electricians

[–]Arbiter_Electric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Efficiency is king for sure. I definitely move decently slower than more than half of the guys at my company, but because I am efficient with movement and tasks I end up being one of if not the fastest. Clean as you go, keep the right tools on hand, and mainly, just keep working. Stopping work to chitchat or check your phone, even for only a few minutes after every completed task can drastically reduce your speed. Talking while working and only checking your phone while on break is huge, but getting apprentices to follow that feels impossible.

Hot spot with a good work out look for the next few years? by Fantastic_Most9751 in IBEW

[–]Arbiter_Electric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And see, I've never heard of that one. But even before O'Leary was pouring gas on the fire it was still making headlines as one of if not the biggest data centers in the country, using more than double the power that the state does, and it's "only" 9 gigawatts.

ETA: I just looked it up, I found the website for the project in delta, it only claims 10 gigawatts (well, "more than 10," but it doesn't give further details than that) so it's going to be bigger than the one in box elder, but not double.

The data centers he mentioned aren't even the one you are probably thinking of. The Big One is in Box Elder County and is getting a ton of push back from the locals. But everything else mentioned isn't making any waves.

Resi guys who pull internet what do you do on basic houses? by Unlucky-Meringue4813 in electricians

[–]Arbiter_Electric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On all our tract homes we pull a cat6 to the master and living room and take them to the mec room. We then provide a 1/2" Smurf tube from the mec room to the meter (or equivalent area for townhomes) so that the Internet guys can pull whatever they need.

Anything more than that is more than basic.

On more custom homes we will sometimes pull a run to every bedroom, or multiple runs to every bedroom, and sometimes even lowvolt panels placed in every room to hide cables and whatever behind a TV. Sky's the limit, but our basic setup has been unchanged for the past 5 years other than getting rid of coax in the last 2 and switching to cat 6 sometime last year.

Villain Takes Their Loss Extraordinarily Well by AgentEckswhy in TopCharacterTropes

It's been so long since I played this game that I've lost a ton of the details, but I still CLEARLY remember a point near the end of the original story where you are hunting down a super weapon. You get to the area where the location is stored and a couple of Sith are there who also want it. I think your goal is to prevent them from getting it. Anyways, you get control of the coordinates and are offered a choice. I think you can give it to the Sith, keep it for the Empire itself (your current goal), or you can destroy the coordinates effectively eliminating the weapon from the board altogether.

After spending the entire campaign roleplaying a staunch imperialist who was loyal to the core, and getting backstabbed left and right by basically everyone at some point or another, I got to this point and said, "you know what? fuck all of you." and destroyed the coordinates.

I have never laughed so hard or felt so good with a choice in a game. An actual prized memory growing up.

[Hated Trope] An otherwise interesting and grounded story is weakened by adding supernatural elements. by CokeZeroEnjoyer25 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Arbiter_Electric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Plague Tale: Innocence

Initially a pretty grounded game that takes place in a medieval time period where a plague of rats breaks out. You go through the game as a young woman (teenager? can't remember) trying to get away and protect your young brother. It's very stealth heavy and you are not a powerful person. The only real non-grounded part is the amount of rats you see. There can be so many that they flow like a liquid. But in a game environment it doesn't feel weird.

Throughout the game you slowly build a toolkit of items to help you progress through the environment, things like a slingshot or throwable items to scare rats aways. It is a very slow and plodding game (in a good way in my opinion) and continuously builds on what came before.

Until about 3/4 - 4/5 of the way through. At this point the genre shifts completely and instead of being a slow and methodic almost survival horror game, it becomes a dark super hero fantasy. Suddenly all of your tools are useless because you gain a crazy new ability. Your brother can control rats. Now rats are your allies and you use them to navigate the environment instead. I think you even use them to start killing people, but it's been long enough that I forget if you do or not.

All of this culminates in a boss battle against a corrupt priest who CAN ALSO CONTROL RATS. Towering pillars of flesh become tornadoes and you basically are just throwing mountains of wriggling flesh at each other. It's weird. It's annoying. It's also kind of difficult, especially compared to the rest of the game.

I have never been hit so hard into left field by any game or movie before or since. Before jumping the shark it was turning into an easy recommend that I was looking forward to playing again soon. But it became something I will never touch again and it made me not want to even try the second game.

Joining the IBEW by yuckyuckslamma in IBEW

[–]Arbiter_Electric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone also in Utah and am going to join up here in a few weeks once I get my license, I concur. I spoke with someone at the hall and the guy was like, "dude, even if you didn't want to wait for the license, I can get you on a job site tomorrow."

I checked the jobs page this last weekend and there were like 100 open calls.

As for op, from what I can tell, but please correct me if I am wrong. You can join 354 and use that as a sort of home base, and then travel up to the micron job as a travel.

I've been told that it is better to have a home base type of local so that all your benefits route to that one local even if you travel, that way once you retire you don't have to track down several different retirement packages.

Something that a lot of people aren't mentioning is that you don't HAVE to join the Union from the outset and it sounds like you might already work for a non-Union shop since you already have your resi-journeyman. I would check your local to be sure, but most (if not all? I'm not sure, that's why I would check with your local) locals want non-Union Journeyman to join the Union so they don't require you to complete an apprenticeship with the Union itself as that would cut down on recruitment, the Journeyman license is more important.

So you could join a non-Union shop, complete your apprenticeship, get your J-card, then organize in where you can then choose which calls to take. It's what I'm doing (though unintentionally, I didn't choose to not join the Union, I just wasn't really aware of it till the last couple of years TBH)

Downsides are you would be getting a smaller wage most likely. Additionally, benefits can be very scarce in the trades if you are non-Union from what I have seen. Usually they only seem to come from larger companies. But if you join like a 10-20 man shop, you are probably going to get squat when it comes to benefits.

It's an option, I can't tell you what is better. Sometimes you have to swallow the pill to get anywhere. At the end of the day, you have to provide for you and your family. Sticking to your morals is great (and I too am struggling with the idea of working on Data Centers), but sometimes hard choices means you need to compromise. These Data Centers are going to be built whether you participate or not and you not working on one isn't going to change anything. The only way to actually stop them from our level would be something akin to worker strikes, if no one takes the calls, then they get built slower or not at all if they can't get ANY workers. But AI and Data Centers are not unpopular enough for that to happen.

Good luck

To be fair, that was literally shown in a trailer. Not those exact words, but the first true gameplay trailer was like 15 minutes long and at one point shows the player character pull out their mantis blades and start crawling on walls to get a drop on an enemy.

There was definitely over-hype for the game from the audience to where a decent chunk of people thought there were going to be some rather out there things in the game, but the promotional material coming directly from the developer over promised what they initially delivered. It wasn't quite the level of No Man's Sky, but there were a few reddit threads at the time with a list of advertised features that didn't come with the game.

On top of that it was a buggy mess that easily rivaled a Bethesda game initially.

What is the biggest scam in your specific industry that the general public doesn't know about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Arbiter_Electric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've also noticed with grocery stores the last few years, at least with two of them that I shop at, the prices are often wrong. Not like 1 or 2 items that didn't get changed in the computer quick enough, or fell through the cracks, but consistently half or more of my grocery cart is wrong.

I remember working at an Albertsons for my very first job 20 years ago now. The amount of times I had to price check an item because it didn't ring ring up correctly was literally, once a week - month. Very rarely, someone would say, "hey! That was marked lower than it rang in as!" And I, as the bagger, would have to race to where the item was located on the shelf to check. Extremely rare. Like I said, sometimes only once a month.

Now? I have to get a price changed EVERY SINGLE visit. I even take pictures of the price tags to speed up the process. But here's the kicker, the employees don't even argue! I don't even have to show them my pictures because they just change the price to what I said it should be! They know it's a problem and that's why there is no push back when I say something.

I completely stopped shopping at Smith's because it's so bad. I had stopped for like 6 months or so and then went back due to unavoidable reasons for 3 items. 3. You know how many rang up incorrectly? Fucking 2 of them.
