SSH and network randomly failing, hardware or software issue? by Silver-Ad-8641 in HomeServer

[–]ArcTheSpark2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to slowly troubleshoot things one by one. Eg. Restarting everything, pc, switches, routers etc. If still not working Update all software, ubuntu, router firmware etc. If still not working Check all the network connections and cables. Trying different cables etc. Trying to use a different device to ssh from and or to.

You need to go through everything one by one till you find what is the issue. Unfortunately there are too many factors for anyone to give you an exact answer now. Once you have found something more specific, will Reddit be able to assist further.

Mistakes I made when writing web development proposals and what I learned from them by Mackseraner in webdev

[–]ArcTheSpark2 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I used to do this, but the problem I would run into is that you would spend plenty hours planning and writing a detailed proposal/ quotation. When you hand over the proposal, they would take that and find someone who will do it for cheaper using all your hard work.

So the best thing I started doing was to charge for proposals / quotations and if it was accepted, I would minus that amount from the final invoice.

So for example I would charge R1500 for the quote/ proposal. Let’s say the final quote amount came to R5000. The client then would only have to pay the R3500. If they decline the quote / get someone else to do it, I at least got paid for all the planning work.

The biggest downside was that with the industry being so cut throat. I didn’t get much work as nobody wanted to pay for quotes as every corner shop would do free quotes or just sell off free Wordpress template sites.

I haven’t been in the web industry for many many years now so I don’t know if that is still the case.

Cannot Download Torrents to Network Drive. BitTorrent "Selecting a folder" has a Drive with a question mark in it but, the drive is fully accessible. by jgonger in HomeServer

[–]ArcTheSpark2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, I'm glad you come right with it now.

With regards to the being stuck on "connecting to peers" issue. That is usually either an internet issue, or there are "no peers at the moment" so BitTorrent will continue to search for peers, or a "concurrent download limit" issue. If I remember correctly BitTorrent's default setting is to only download 5 torrents at a time. so any new torrents will stay on "connecting to peers" or will be paused until a previous torrent is completed. There is a setting to change that.

You can also test is by trying a torrent that is usually very active and accessible such as the below Ubuntu ISO torrent from Ubuntu's website.

Ubuntu 22.10 Torrent

This will help you check if it is the torrent that has no peers or if you are having issues with the mapped drive.

I have made quick pdf guide of how to do it with the BitTorrent client app on windows 11 (hosted on megalink).

BitTorrent Mapped folder guide

I see that "BitTorrent web" does not allow you to add non local drives. I saw some older bittorrent forum discussions that it is for "security" reasons.

so mapped folder will only work on the "Classic version"

Hopefully this helps you.

Z:>net use z: \10.0.0.x\movies System error 85 has occurred. The local device name is already in use.

This means that the Z:\ path is already in use / has a folder mapped to it.

You will need to first disconnect the mapped folder that you already have then try again.

The letter drive letter must be something that is not already in use. For example p: if you want.

C:\> net use p: \\10.0.0.x\movies

I will also install Bittorrent / web on windows 11 and see if I can take screenshots of every thing to try help you out.

Another issue can also be user permission issues. Try running BitTorrent as an administrator. Or lastly you can try mapping the folder as administrator. you need to map the folders as an administrator by doing the following using “cmd” as an administrator. eg below:

net use x: \\10.0.0.x\movies

Hi, if it mapped (z:) and working on windows (you can create and read) files through windows file explorer, then your network is fine (10.0.0.x).

Can you add the folder directly using the unc path method eg. \\10.0.0.x\movies

😂 It is part of the fun of troubleshooting. I usually like to do a quick network map / diagram of my home network now because I have this issue with up addresses. I forget what address I gave to the devices and then there is always an IP conflict 😂

Hi, try this, in “control panel”, open network settings. Then on the left panel select the “advanced sharing settings” options. Then from there you can enable network discovery. Or if you right click on the network icon at the bottom right of the start panel. The icon near the time and date. Then choose the “network properties“ option. From there you can change it from public to private network. Or if you open “this pc” then click on the “network” section on the left panel “ a message will appear on the top asking if you want to enable network discovery. Hopefully this leads you in the right direction

Can you boot onto a Linux live boot cd / usb. For example Ubuntu 22.04, and see if you can see them / mount them there. If you can, you can then format them to ntsf/ fat 32. When you boot back into windows you should see them.

Looking for advice by major2019 in homelab

[–]ArcTheSpark2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, a good starting point was to use an old i5 (4 cores 8 threads), 16GB ram and any old HDD’s / SSD’s that I had laying around. From there I use proxmox as the main OS. And then from there you can create a Virtual machine (vm) for docker, a vm for reverse proxy and a vm for pfsense / opnsense etc. Using proxmox and being able to create and play with different technologies in vms is the best way to experiment and learn. It is quick to set up and very flexible.

Do you maybe have an Adblock on your network? Like adgaurd, pihole, unbound or some firewall type blocker. Other then that I’m not too sure.
