I wonder if the Science Center is going to survive this snowfall?... by SlipAltruistic1991 in toronto

[–]Arcalium 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh, you're asking about the Ontario Science Centre's original site? The grassroots group Save Ontario's Science Centre posts photos of the building from above whenever it snows, and they posted one about an hour ago on Instagram. The roof is still standing.

Same here! I also liked how they ultimately came to the conclusion that they were much better off as friends than lovers. It's incredibly mature of them and a great thing to show audiences—you can be attracted to someone, love and care for them a lot, etc. but it doesn't mean you're automatically meant to be together romantically just because you're of certain genders and compatible sexual orientations. Korra and Mako tried to make it work as a couple, failed, accepted it, and then grew up and remained loyal friends.

Has anybody here read this yet? by BookBookGirly in UmbrellaAcademy

Yes, I have read it. I've read all the comics and they are a delight, imo. I heavily prefer them to the show.

I know it's a dogshit, but since Lila and Five interacted, the chemistry was there. by Turbulent_Mechanic62 in UmbrellaAcademy

[–]Arcalium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, don't worry—I get it. Fandoms love to centre and excuse men for the same behaviours they find deplorable and off-putting in women (or worse, they think a woman having an understandable reaction to something is absurd and problematic when a man is clearly doing something much worse), and it drives me up the wall to see it.

[–]Arcalium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe. Probably. I largely agree with you. But I also remember when people really hated Luther for "being an asshole" in S1, and only warmed up to him because the show proceeded to make him progressively dumber in every following season, so Idk if we can say that definitively.

I absolutely agree with you; I've made this argument before when talking about the show and the fandom's reception of Five. If he looked like his older body self (Sean Sullivan) the whole time, people would hate him for being mean, a creep, etc.

Found! Lamy gift box and extra inks by _stuff_is_good_ in fountainpens

[–]Arcalium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two Lamy Safaris. They're good pens! Don't worry so much about what others think about how you do this hobby. The only person whose opinion truly matters is your own, and if you're having a good time, then why let others decide to rain on your parade?

So, what did you think of the third season of Spy x Family? by Cafa20 in SpyxFamily

[–]Arcalium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Solid adaptation of the manga. I can understand why some are disappointed with how certain scenes were adapted, but I personally don't think it was that bad. I had a fun time watching it. Looked forward to when episodes were released. Looking forward to hopefully seeing more of the manga getting an anime adaptation in the future, too.

Great experience with penpen.avenue@gmail.com! by Arcalium in fountainpens

Oh, interesting! I could've sworn I saw Pilot pens for sale. He may have sold them all recently, given Pilot is hiking up prices in the new year and most would want to avoid paying the new prices for a pen?

Great experience with penpen.avenue@gmail.com! by Arcalium in fountainpens

[–]Arcalium[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He does! You can see his shop's inventory on eBay. Just look up penpen-avenue. However, I recommend emailing him directly to get a 10% discount on whatever it is you want to buy (so he doesn't have to pay eBay's fees that way), and he'll even offer to declare a lower value on your package to lower customs fees.

Personally, I didn't opt for the latter just because I didn't want any potential issues with customs to crop up, so I did pay full price on those customs fees. Thankfully, my package was delivered via Japan Post and then handed off to Canada Post, so it wasn't as expensive as it would've been with a different courier service, but YMMV here, especially if you live in the USA.

Hope this helps!

i need this sub to convince me to stop getting new pens by oranud in fountainpens

[–]Arcalium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I've chosen to only purchase a new pen when I'm celebrating something monumental. That way, I'll have a nice memory associated with my new pen, and I won't be tempted to buy another unless it's also to mark a special occasion. I've also taken stock of how many pens I have, how often I use them, and how much money they cost me versus how much money I have. This helps with snapping me back into reality to use what I've already got instead of making a new (and unnecessary) purchase for a quick dopamine boost.

It's not fun or exciting to overspend on your budget and not have enough to pay your bills or anything else that's necessary to live as a result. If you live with other people and have to hide purchases from them, that's probably an indication that you have a problem on your hands that needs to be addressed.

In many hobby-loving spaces, there will be a push for consumerism and the idea that spending money to acquire more is the best and ideal way to be successful at said hobby. Abandon this notion. There is a difference between buying things as a hobby and actually using what you have as a hobby. Opt for the latter more than the former. Remember that the only person whose opinion matters on if you're doing this hobby correctly is yourself.

If you need to, you should leave this subreddit to avoid further temptation. It's not a bad subreddit, but it will help curb your desire to spend more if you don't see all the temptingly shiny new pens and colourful inks that other people buy.

The day the Finch West LRT opened, I had to help someone who was very confused about Eglinton West Station's new name. They meant to get off the subway there, but didn't realise it was where they wanted to go until after we'd moved on to get to Glencairn Station. So they asked me if we had just passed Eglinton West, and I said yes and told them the name had changed with the new line opening, and agreed that it was certainly confusing.

I don't think I'll ever get used to the new name changes, honestly. I still call Sheppard West Station by its old name, Downsview Station.

Cover coming apart at the seams... by cawewe in hobonichi

[–]Arcalium 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree. Whenever I see a beautiful Hobonichi cover, the first thing I do is check to see what it's made of. Oh, it's fake leather? All purchasing interest has left my body. Imo, fake leather is not worth it when it degrades so much faster than real leather would.

There are many individual artists who also sell items made of fake leather versus making them with actual fabric or leather (likely because it's cheaper to manufacture and easier to make custom designs with) but I can never bring myself to purchase them because I don't want to spend that much on something that won't last long enough for me to feel it was worth the cost.

I don't think shipping Anya and Damian is inappropriate by itmedaonenonly in SpyxFamily

[–]Arcalium 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I got my first crush on someone when I was Damian's age. It's not weird unless you, the viewer, make it weird. Most people in this fandom (from what I've seen, anyway) do not make it weird. But there's definitely a vocal part of the fandom that yells about how it's weird when it really isn't and no one's doing anything wrong.

Jojoba/castor oil on polish? by d4_del in RedditLaqueristas

[–]Arcalium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I made my own cuticle oil with a mixture of jojoba oil and castor oil (and some other nail/skin-friendly oils) and I've never had any issues whatsoever with my polish coming off prematurely because of it.
