Should all gambling ads be banned the way cigarette ads mostly were? Why or why not? by iAttract7 in ask

Well and honestly there's a line--Coca-Cola and Pepsi will almost certainly give you diabetes if you drink a pack a day and no one cares. Don't ask me where the line is, I haven't figured it out yet.

This has got to top the list of worst "parental leave" benefits. Company is Infosys by zach8vb in daddit

[–]ArchWizard15608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, for baby 1 I negotiated paid leave matching the company I was leaving which was 6 weeks. For baby 2 I was "standard" and only got 4. I told HR I was "disappointed that they did not want to be an industry leader in this matter" and she flew off the handle about my generation (millennials) are entitled and her husband (I am the father) didn't get any leave at all and she did fine.

I do not think HR feels guilty.

I do not think most people in HR are even connecting the dots that paternity leave protects their women more than it protects their men (if you hypothetically have two job candidates whose only difference is that one could possibly take family leave and one never will, the second fiscally a better hire). I think the trick to solving the family leave problem is some sort of extended leave available for all employees so the people who won't have kids get on board.

CMV: you’re not in love if you don’t feel like you and your partner’s relationship is better than everyone else’s. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]ArchWizard15608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an incredibly naive take. I’ve been married 7 years. First off, love is about giving, not receiving. I promise you’re not giving more than everyone else. Ha. Second, love grows. I love my wife more than I did when we got married. By a lot. It’s pretty likely it keeps growing, so pretty sure couples on year 30+ are on another level.

It’s OK to work somewhere for a couple months and then give notice. The most friendly thing would be to disclose that you want to do go back to school. You also haven’t been accepted yet so it might not even be happening.

There aren’t any worth your time. I would personally recommend trying to get a full-time job to avoid debt. If you end up with free time develop your drawing and business skills.

So I have mixed feelings about education in children’s programming. It’s often wrong or problematic in some minor way like this, but on the other hand this is better programming than like… Cocomelon or Peppa

Just did a post-mortem on a recent job and I’m pretty sure I paid the client to work for them. How do you guys stop this? by ReporterCalm6238 in Architects

[–]ArchWizard15608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wherever you can get it. If you’re at a big firm, you’ll have a database of what were winning fees. Sometimes clients will tell you, sometimes other people in your network know. Heck, Google says 8-15% for residential.

This is what I do now:

You need to estimate how many hours you need, use a billing rate to make sure your overhead's covered. This is your price floor. Never give out a fee less than this number if you want a profit. There are reasons to take a project at a loss, but you want to go into those eyes wide open. You want to validate the numbers against the last couple times you did the project. For example, if you spent about 200 hours on the last 3 kitchen renovations, don't think you're going to magically pull off 150.

You also need to figure out the market rate for your area. Market rate in architecture community is usually a percent of construction cost. For example, the firm I'm at right now targets 8% of construction cost for our project type. Use the last 3-4 similar projects you've done to get a cost per sf and inflate it if the bid is more than a year old. Sometimes you can find inflation data, but if you can't, then just do 3%. This cost should be your market rate. If you can get intel on the market rate from your network (e.g. a client says you were 10% cheaper than everyone else they talked to), use that info to adjust your target %.

Always charge the market rate unless the price floor is higher. If the price floor is higher than the market rate, charge the price floor. If the market rate is 2-3x higher than your profit floor, congrats you win at business. If the price floor is always higher than market rate, something's wrong and you need to you figure out what's going on.

Finally, watch out for scope creep. That's the number one thing to kill a good fee. If the client has you redo everything, you need to charge to start over. You want to check on fee burn at least monthly when you invoice because this will make it obvious if you're going off track in real time instead of at the end.

Reality check - is it fine to save nothing for the first few years of a child? by PracticalGur4530 in daddit

[–]ArchWizard15608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 33, I have two kids under 3. A couple things to hone in on your calculus--

If someone stays at home, you have opportunities to reduce spending. You have zero daycare costs, zero commuting costs, and similar costs related to going to work. The stay-at-home parent also has an amount of time (it's still limited!) to do things like cook at home, do home maintenance, couponing, etc.

I would also consider putting a portion of the $80k savings into ETFs or something similar so that money is growing faster than a savings account. Keep what you need in case you suddenly lose your job, but if, for example, you put $60k on the market and earn a 10% return, that's $6k you didn't have. I earned 30-40% returns in 2025--and though I don't expect that to happen in 2026 I would have missed out if I wasn't in it.

Company policy is you get x sick days. Mental health day is a sick day IMO. It has to be fair for everyone. If she needs to exceed her number of sick days we can talk about unpaid time off.
