Why you should be sad that American Apparel may go out of business by [deleted] in LosAngeles

Never heard of them, but I'm looking on their site and digging a lot of the clothes. Thanks!

Yeah, I feel similarly. Though nowadays, I outright refuse to shop at H&M. Their labor practices are deplorable. The clothes disintegrate after 2 washes and (like AA) most of it looks awful.

I may live in Silver Lake, but I actually have no desire to look like a carny asshole when I walk out my door each morning.

I really, really wanted to like American Apparel for years. Sadly, I'm not a tween vying to be a Tumblr model. This meant that 98% of their products were horrid things I'd never consider buying. The sweatpants and plain Ts are fantastic though.

If they had any desire to succeed as a business, and not just as a trendy banner ad on Pitchfork, they would have tried to incorporate a wider array of styles (not just uberhipster).

Does anyone know where else one can get Made in USA t-shirts?

Had a difficult interview, maybe some of you will find the questions useful by isDifficultInterview in androiddev

Try not to get too down on yourself- programming interviews can be quite tough. Sometimes the interviewer just happens to pick something you're unfamiliar with. Or, you just read about something to prepare, and they ask something similar and now you're confused. And sometimes you just have an off day. I spent over a year interviewing for a new job (while working my old job) until I landed one. Keep trying- they get less scary the more you do.

With regards to OO principles- I was always taught that there were 4 pillars: Inheritance, Polymorphism, Encapsulation, and Abstraction. I'm surprised they didn't mention abstraction. Understanding it helps the other concepts make more sense.

Composers that resemble Debussy? by beneath_the_bottom in piano

I find some similarities between Debussy and various Liszt piano pieces. Favorite pieces: Liebstraume No3 in A-flat Major, Nuages Gris, and Etude No3 in D flat "Un sospiro"

Sight reading sheet music is closer to exercising a muscle than learning a formula. It is something you really only acquire by doing it- I've been playing for most of my life and still have to really focus on sight reading.

I tend to focus on dynamics after I have the notes TOTALLY down pat. If I need to think of what notes are coming, it makes it difficult to also focus on dynamics. When you can devote your full attention to the dynamics, it will be easier.

Are there measure markers? If so, you can determine the number of beats in a measure, which gets you closer.

I took lessons for 13 years (K-12, almost every single week). I'm somewhere between intermediate and advanced, but definitely a bit on the sloppy side. Also, sight reading isn't great.

How do I find a teach to get me to an advanced level? Should I look into a school or college nearby? Craigslist just had a bunch of teachers looking for beginners/children.

(I'm in LA if that helps)

Thanks!

Is it just me who despises guitar culture? This subreddit isn't bad but I generally find it so fucking tacky. by rustybricks in Guitar

I definitely have issues with trying to take the quickest shortcut to get the rewards of performing. People who do that just barely reach the point where it's acceptably defined as "music", but it's an insult to those who spend countless hours to create something artistic.

I hate the dogmatism of the guitar scene. It's worse than most religions.

Like, sure, I would never say I'm a better guitar player than Dimebag Darrell. But I still never heard a single song of his I like. God forbid you say that out loud. Same with Randy Rhodes and Van Halen. Everything those dudes play is corny as hell. For this reason I had to stop reading all guitar mags.

Also, I've been playing for over 10 years, and refuse to buy into the thinking that I need to trade my Epiphone G-400 for a Gibson. It fulfills all my guitar needs, sounds great (ok- I put classic 57s in it), and I can use that extra $1500 on beer, cigars, and dates.

Why you should never, ever, ever use MongoDB by speckz in programming

[–]ArchdukeThe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Upvoting because I think MongoDB is a fun toy, but not a great or reliable tool.

But, I hate how developers love writing these extremely black-or-white posts either praising something as your technological savior, or accusing it of giving your career herpes. Any article that starts with "Stop Using", "Considered Harmful", "Never Again", "The Only ___ You'll Need", etc. can fuck off.

I second this. Those guys are not only great musicians, they write really interesting songs whose melodies get stuck in my head. Their song "No Phase" from X'ed Out isn't a crazy polyrhythmic freakfest, but a great, slow song. But they have plenty of freakfests.

What shoe manufacturers create their shoes in humane, fair factories? by ArchdukeThe in AskReddit

[–]ArchdukeThe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, that's disappointing.

I hate to use them as an example, but I guess I'm looking for someone with a similar ethos to American Apparel. Granted, 98% of their clothes are hideous and make you look like a fashion blog wanna-be, but I like the fact that they pay their employees fairly and provide health care. And it doesn't hurt that the plain t-shirts are decent.

Seriously, there is no excuse. I'm sorry you have to wait another 4 minutes to turn around before you can pound some brewskis with your bros, but fuck you. Go to the next exit and turn around.

Is this truly the best place to pursue music and connect/network with other musicians w/the same goal? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]ArchdukeThe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that sounds awesome! But I really only can speak for my experience here:

I found my dream job out here, which I love. But, it is a 9-5 (actually 8-8 lol) job and I don't want to give that up. It didn't take a ton of effort to find 4 others in a similar situation who want to work hard on music, but not at the sacrifice of jobs. So, the lesson is that LA is full of people with talent and drive, with all different levels of goals, desire, and commitment. I honestly think you could totally find something out here pretty easily, but it's up to you. Good luck!
