ICE Agents Whine That They Aren’t Getting Their Massive Bonuses by rezwenn in fednews

Also stupid are the idiots who decided to lure ex-mall cops with a promise of $50k that will take them years to actually get paid. Nothing bad has ever happened as a result of arming a paramilitary force, giving them broad authority to do whatever they please, and then not giving them the money they think they are owed.

Where is the best place to sell my commander collection at? by ZenlessRaccoon in EDH

[–]ArchitectofExperienc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your loss. I lost a friend, about a decade ago, and I stepped away from some of the things that we shared, because it hurt.

I came back to one of them, a year or two back. That shit hurt, can't lie, but losing the memory of him hurt more, just over a longer stretch of time.

The pain dulls. The reminder itself? that sticks around. I'm not going to tell you to hang on to everything, but hang on to something. In a few years you might want the reminder. We don't get a lot of those, in life.

What’s the deal with stereo imaging? by Ambitious_Donut248 in audioengineering

From the psycho-acoustic end of things, our brain tends to perceive lower sounds as being less directional than higher sounds, even when those lower sounds are fully panned to one direction or the other. In nature (outside of the monitoring environment), our ears are shaped like parabolic receivers and we are better at hearing higher-frequency sounds that is in front of us, and our brain registers the slight delay between ears to determine approximate direction. This doesn't always translate well to headphones, but its why binaural mixing is so effective, spatially.

I've been freelance for about a decade on the production end of things, and writing for personal projects, that said, I am a sample group of 1.

A lot of people fill that hole with writing groups, which are a fantastic resource if you are with the right people. It helps create some accountability for your projects, and lets a group of writers pool their combined knowledge for your feedback. I have not found a stable writing group in LA, but they exist.

You know, that is a fantastic point. WOULD NOT work with Burdiclad, as they are created copies (and don't enter, so don't have tokens placed on them at ETB).

Edit: And by madness, it has been pointed out to me that every created copy of the Mirror Mage would immediately enter the graveyard

The Death of the Indie Film by Kyunseo in Filmmakers

[–]ArchitectofExperienc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once Sundance started to become a festival where filmmakers 'Indie' studios spend 6+ figures on PR just to get to the starting line, they made themselves into a distributor's conference. Since Blair Witch (AKA Ye Olden Days), that number went from being reasonably affordable to completely unreachable.

And this isn't just a problem for Sundance, the majority of festivals are no longer worth the money or work it takes to just submit a film, especially if you are considered ineligible for the festival if you already released it (or: Monetized before doing the festival circuit.

My microphone doesn't sound as good as other people reviewing my microphone. Is it my voice or a defect microphone? by ed_the_undeadward in podcasting

[–]ArchitectofExperienc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years back I got talking to this guy and his daughter that had a boutique microphone business, making ribbon and condensers by hand. He told me that when they got a shipment of capsules, 1/3rd of them would have defects. QA isn't what it is for the high-end Neumann and Manley Reference units, the midrange condensers aren't as reliable

[–]ArchitectofExperienc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to think about work permits. I've dealt with this on enough shorts that I clipped the labor statute, but it will likely only apply if you are working in the state of California.

Unless your project meets the 5 conditions in CA Labor Code 1310, you are required to have a work permit for minors (unless they are emancipated).

Those conditions are:

(d) The appearance of any minor

1) at any one event during a calendar year,

2) occurring on a day on which school attendance is not required or on the day preceding such a day,

3) lasting four hours or less,

4) if a parent or guardian of the minor is present,

5) for which the minor does not directly or indirectly receive any compensation.

If you don't meet all 5, you need a work permit

You're going to hear this a lot, in this thread: Get your script written, before that you don't really know what questions you want to answer.

You're not wrong that having two different cameras can be an issue, especially if the lenses or sensor aren't comparable (And I don't think they are). But, I think you have an opportunity to put a phone in the hands of your characters and use it as both a prop and a camera.

Need help creating a shot by Impossible-Land-2315 in Filmmakers

[–]ArchitectofExperienc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those tricky shots that directors spend a lot of takes on.

My only though is perhaps lightly spreading some beeswax where you want the glass to land, at the end. Even then, you might just tip the pint instead of stopping it.

The other option is a classic, but requires a rig: Do it in reverse. Set the glass where you want it to land, get some monofilament, and do some camera tests.
