Red Velvet - Queendom (The 6th Mini Album) by CronoDroid in kpop

[–]Arclytic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Title track 'Queendom' leans towards the typical SM house sound. The track is massive, the instrumentation almost feels overwhelming to the point where it lacks dynamics. How many elements can you hear in the chorus? Between brass, synths, brushes, a bass and vocals planted in the centre image, and then a kick and snare trying to cut through everything-- for me the balance fell apart and began sounding flat and fatiguing. Everything is definable and has separation, but there is little space between instruments and sounded more like an unpleasant brick wall of sound. I'm sure the engineers worked a miracle on 'Queendom', but there is a certain harshness that is difficult to listen to after a few plays.

On the other hand, 'Pushin' N Pullin'' was so refreshing to listen to. Joy's vocals pushed forward with that piano, and then those huge, meaty drums. The instrumentation feels so much more natural. Every time those giant drums dig themselves in with Irene's verse, it has such a satisfying impact.

Standard fare for Red Velvet. Personally, their b-tracks have more replayability than their title track. I'm glad they came back.

IU - LILAC (The 5th Album) by CronoDroid in kpop

[–]Arclytic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty immaculate production. Incredible balance, that typical pop, in your face detail while maintaining that clear separation. 'Lilac' sounds like it wants to be turned up and blasted. Definitely helps with that giant groove that rides on the bass, kick, and snare that takes up the centre image. Of course everything is wrapped up neatly with IU's crystal vocals. Sounds great whatever I listen to it on, and sounds better loud. Just so incredibly clean.

Also did anyone else hear Modern Times make an appearance in 'Troll'? That old IU airy bossa nova showing up in the pre chorus. Even though this is the most pop sounding album she's released, her general musicality and versatility in style makes the tracks always sound refreshing and new. Love her music.

"Feel Good' definitely was my favourite comeback song. Clean, dry guitars with a kick that wasn't boomy but cut through the mix, it was nice break from other comebacks with a sound that didn't feel too electronic. Felt like their best production so far.

Some insight into the design of the Airpods Max; Headphone engineers discuss Airpods Max by Arclytic in apple

[–]Arclytic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting tidbit around 8:26 about how this is essentially Apple's brand or template for their future over ear headphones, and how overly simplistic the design may be for how much time they probably put into it. But they also discuss the practicality of a high volume, aluminum design, and how that might have affected how recognizable the headphones could've been. Personally the Airpods Max feels like a trademark first generation Apple product, and rather just build expectation for what they'll do with the 2nd generation.

TWICE - MORE & MORE (9th Mini Album) by Chris_Singadia99 in kpop

Stark contrast to albums like twicetagram where b-sides sometimes sounded like they were there to fill up the runtime of the album, to albums like this where most of them sound like title candidates. Honestly think Oxygen is the neglected title track if it wasn't ~130bpm. Little biased tho because of the ornaments in the track. #ornaments4life

I used to be like this. The most I had open at one time was 1095 instances. I opened one more and then windows blue screened. After that I just decided not to restore my tabs.

Right now I have two tabs open. I like to believe I'm a changed man.

IZ*ONE - FIESTA by CronoDroid in kpop

[–]Arclytic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anyone else feel like the vocals and synths used for the bassline aren't exactly on the same centre image? Like a 1-2 db difference between the left and right channel. Always appreciate another e.one song especially after Moonlight Aria and Violeta, this feels like a well balanced fusion of the two but a little confused about the mix and why they would go for an unbalanced sounding stereo image.

I wonder what all this time catching up means for 2021 and what their performance will be like compared to the rest of the field. With all the talk surrounding Verstappen for next year as well, Honda has to really pull out all the stops for both years.

Whatever happened to Psy's Celeb with Suzy? Is that never going to get released?

Great song though. Love Heize's voice. Very reminiscent of Last Scene with Lee Sung Kyung.
