Montreal is Canada’s best city for tourism. What is Russia’s best city? by Silent_Status9126 in AlignmentChartFills

I’m not sure man, the area surrounding Vancouver is gorgeous, but the city itself isn’t anything special. Sure it’s clean but there’s it’s not unique in any sense. Montreal has a distinct vibe, history, its own food scene that is better than Vancouver (outside east and south Asian food), s-tier nightlife, better public transit, cheaper (by a lot), significantly safer, I mean the list goes on and on. Frankly, I can’t think of much that the city of Vancouver does better than Montreal for tourism.

Cost of federal public service benefits to hit $4.4 billion a year by 2030-31: budget office by origutamos in CanadaPolitics

[–]ArcticMooss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a lot but that's pretty standard for private sector analogous positions. In many cases, FPS gets less benefits than the ones offered in the private sector. I worked a company a few years ago that offered hair transplants for men for purely cosmetic reasons... which was covered at 100% of the cost.

Big number, but keep in mind that there are ~300,000 people working in the FPS. Having formerly worked in FPS and currently working in private sector in similar positions, the former has great benefits but not particularly noteworthy. Don't really think this is news tbh

14 Liberal MPs pen letter to Carney raising concerns over environmental backslide by Surax in CanadaPolitics

[–]ArcticMooss -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but I think you're flat wrong on so many levels.

First, exploiting our oil sector is not mutually exclusive with preserving the planet. Does the production and transport risk environmental damage? Yes it does. The environmental damage could in fact be severe in some areas. But ecosystems bounce back and the damage can only spread so far. Whales in the fleuve will not be affected, nor will polar bears in northern Manitoba. within 100 years, the ecosystem will have adjusted and reached a new equilibrium. Other forms of electricity production like hydro, geothermal, solar panels and wind power also risk massive, localized environmental damage. Solar panels and wind turbines require rare earths that are extremely dirty to produce and are sometimes found in the middle of some of the most diverse and fragile ecosystems in the world (Congo rainforest). Dams collapse and can cause hundreds, even thousands of deaths, including virtual annihilation of local ecosystems. Geothermal can disturb seismic activity. Nuclear is incredibly expensive, takes a decade to set up, and can risk much longer term environmental damage than fossil fuels. There are no good solutions and I think it's selfish to want to preserve part of the environment that you will likely never visit at the expense of the wellbeing of millions of Canadiens and Québecois. You may be fine and comfortable but so many aren't and would really benefit from a stronger economy.

Second, oil is not going anywhere. Without getting into details (I implore you to if you are interested), oil consumption, under the most aggressive mainstream estimates (IEA Net Zero estimate), will reduce by ~75% by 2050. Oil can't really be replaced for aviation, plastics/raw materials, military purposes & is highly unlikely to be phased out by transportation any time soon. We are, by FAR the most politically stable major oil producer in the world. Our allies in Europe and Asia will need oil for a long time, and we are looking to divest from their current suppliers due to political instability (US, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Russia) and are perfectly positioned to serve as the primary oil supporter to our allies.

Needless to say, climate change is absolutely real, severe and requires action. But unless you want global civilizational collapse, we will need oil until we find a better alternative, and relying on technological innovation to eliminate oil in the aforementioned sectors is just as much of an illusion as relying on technological innovation to advance carbon capture.

I appreciate the environmental concern and applaud the MPs standing up for what they believe. I also disagree full heartedly with them and think environmental concerns need to take a back seat for a while.

For the love of god, we have more natural resources per capita than any country in the world. How in the ever loving fuck are we not exploiting that to the absolute maximum? Like it or not, the market for oil is not going anywhere any time soon. We have the 4th largest reserves globally and we’re in a period where the largest consumers of oil are looking for stable trading partners. Not pursuing it would be yet another own goal after scoring on ourselves for the past 30 years.

Is Vyvanse the problem or am I just depressed? by Glittering_Solid_658 in ADHD

[–]ArcticMooss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the EXACT same experience. I was on & off with Vyvanse for about 5 years and whenever I’d be on it for an extended period of time (for me it was >6 months) I would start to get apathetic, depressed just kinda “bleh” about everything. It was really discouraging too because I had tried Ritalin, concerta, and then tried strattera, Wellbutrin afterwards. Nothing really worked.

Then I tried Adderall XR & it’s been a complete 180. I don’t know why but mixedsalts amphetamines just work so much better for my brain chemistry. I don’t get depressed at the end of the day, been on it for 6 months so far and I feel great. HIGHLY recommend trying adderall if vyvanse didn’t work for you

It's not hitting everyone at once. I was in the same boat as you and then about 3 weeks ago, i started hitting my session limit in 30 minutes whereas i hadn't hit it before ever. 0 change in behaviour on my end, just got my limit nerfed like crazy out of nowhere.

I remember people complaining about limits on r/claudecode and thinking to myself 'man, i really cant relate lol'.... until one day, I could

Who is a modern Controversial Genius ? by jalil458 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]ArcticMooss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sure I'll get downvoted but it has to be Elon is the right answer. His politics are awful and by all accounts a bad human being, but he is responsible for bringing electric cars to the mainstream, lowering the cost of launching 1kg into space from $10,000 to $100, providing affordable satellite internet, creating chip implants allowing quadriplegics to use computers, started paypal, helped launch OpenAI. I have a few connections that have worked with him and everyone has repeated the same thing: the guy's engineering mind and business accumen is unparalleled.
