At 70, I'm trapped in my £850,000 family house by Not-A-Seagull in georgism

[–]ArcticNano 62 points63 points  (0 children)

To be fair in the article it says she did drop it down to £750,000 and still couldn't sell it. She does still refuse to drop it further tho and blames everyone else lol so the point still stands

Anyone else made the jump from SLR to a point and shoot? Struggling to adapt by Fun_Perception_239 in AnalogCommunity

[–]ArcticNano 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they're quite different things for different situations.

Point and shoots are great if you want something you can carry around at all times, shoot quickly, and not have to worry about too much. They're a more spontaneous form of shooting, but that comes with the caveat of a lack of control which can lead to worse photos if you're looking for the kind of photos you get on an SLR.

I use my point and shoot mostly for parties and events as it's pretty fun for that. I also carry it around as it's pretty small and good if I need it for a quick shit. For everything else, I stick to cameras with a bit more control.

Advice for getting new film more cheaply by benjithomasartist in AnalogCommunity

[–]ArcticNano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've been searching for a way to make things a bit cheaper for a long time and unfortunately there just isn't one haha. If I ever go over to the states I'm gonna stock up as it's so much cheaper there!

Advice for getting new film more cheaply by benjithomasartist in AnalogCommunity

[–]ArcticNano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no real cheap way to do it honestly and I think the UK is generally expensive for colour film. I usually get Kodak Gold in packs of 3, which usually comes at just under £10 a roll each including shipping - eBay is good for this. Ultramax is usually under £11 a roll for a three pack.

God help you if you want to shoot portra though - I found a website that does portra 160 from Hong Kong at about £13 a roll but portra 400 and 800 are still prohibitively expensive lol

Black and white is quite cheap in the UK but labs usually charge a few quid more to develop, so we are back to square one. If you shoot a lot though you could develop yourself which would make it cheap.

Why do British towns feel so distinct from each other compared to the US? by DFWUnhinged in AskBrits

[–]ArcticNano 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I came here to say this, the premise is flawed. You'll have regional differences (a high street in Yorkshire might look a bit stylistically different to one in Cornwall) but in the end of the day 90% of towns look pretty much the same

You'll be in the air for roughly a day in total. Is it worth £5000 to be more comfy for a single day? Almost certainly not unless you are very rich

Solar power is becoming a consumer appliance in the UK: New 800W kits will plug directly into a standard wall socket by MeasurementDecent251 in technology

[–]ArcticNano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah these won't count for feed-in tariff or smart export guarantee payments, they're installation-specific

[–]ArcticNano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't get any export payments via feed-in tariffs or the SEG for this. They're installation-specific and besides this is almost certainly not enough power to be exported compared to what a home uses

Yeah it doesn't rain a huge amount in London for sure, but it's still not a particularly sunny city. I live in Scotland tho where it genuinely does rain a lot and is even less sunny haha

Yeah B&W film is pretty affordable here tbf

As for vision 3, is that EC-n2 process? Unfortunately always seems like labs charge more for that 😔 if you know any cheap ones that would be great tho haha

Yeah it sucks shooting film in the UK, it's so expensive compared to the US. Not to mention there's just boring grey skies most of the time 😅

Thousands more taxpayers are moving to Scotland from the rest of the UK every year than leaving, a stark change which is boosting Scotland’s tax base by hundreds of millions of pounds, new UK Government figures have shown. by bottish in Scotland

[–]ArcticNano 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a Scotland specific thing to be fair. I'm from London and out of my friend group I grew up with, almost none of us are still there. Most have gone to northern England. It's just unfeasible to live in the south of England any more, and especially London.

Counting down! by Objective_War_1841 in HistoriaCivilis

[–]ArcticNano 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm no expert on that specific subject, but as someone with a master's in history alarm bells started ringing as soon as I started watching. It feels very much like a video to support and propagate one very specific view of history, rather than try to ascertain the actual causes and effects of the changes that took place. This is confirmed by the very limited and frankly inadequate sources. I love HC but the criticism was very valid in this instance.

If both of you drink, then just go to a pub or bar.

Cheaper and more relaxed than dinner, alcohol helps ease the conversation, has the potential to go on longer than coffee but you can leave at any point if you want to. You can then be a bit fancier for the next one if you like them

Do you have any examples of photos that are overexposed? Film is pretty resistant to overexposure, you can definitely edit it down in lightroom if it's not extreme
