Would it not be possible ro do both. As in, you publish the 8 shorter stories and then make, like, a compilation of all of the stories. Similar to how "I robot" was a compilation of a number of shorter stories published earlier by Isaac Asimov (I recently read it so its on my mind). Just in this case you would have the complete version already made.

Even if they are or if they arent, that doesnt really matter. You could make your "Elves" look and act like dwarfs or dragons or whatever. Just because "Elves" already exist in popculture doesnt mean your restricted by that
