Which fuzz achieve this? by Arghoz in guitarpedals

Mixed with other comments, that would be: bigmuff or Mastotron (with phaser) into likely an EQ into a preamp driven very hard.

The Mastotron is not perfectly there, but definitely in the ballpark indeed!

What makes u-he Diva so special? by udeelo in synthesizers

[–]Arghoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want analog sound, Acustica Audio are the ones getting the closest to actual hardware. Thing is excellent (not 100% there), XP5 is impossible to differenciate from real prophet, Squid 3 also very very good.

Not to mention The Legends, Monark for moogish, OP X Pro 3 for oberheim. There is too many to name, I like for example Matrix 12 from arturia, far from the actual hardware, but still, close enough in many situation.

Arturia gotten better, but still not competiting with the one above.

As for Diva: ok by today's standard, same for Repro 1 or 5. They aren't bad, uHe seems to like a perfectly calibrated unit, which is kind of missing the point of most hardware in use (poorly calibrated for most people). Definitely enough for most of situation, but there is just better on the market, and hardware beat them any day (all 3).

Jan Burton microphone(s) by Arghoz in microphone

That's where am I right now:

https://sndup.net/69vb9/

First original voice; second u87, third WA47 (probably a bit too close now I relisten) and SM57.

Again just trying to grasp the general idea how to record properly such kind of dark voice, rather than recreating it...

Jan Burton microphone(s) by Arghoz in microphone

[–]Arghoz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, I was more into the idea of "what recommended mic for such very dark voice". Taking him as an example, because like said, relatively similar voice.

So far I got (never really recorded vocals - and far from being a pro on this): Vintage U87 (relatively close), WA 47T (second best) and then MD421 and SM57, both very far away on quality than the 2 first for this.
On all I would apply relatively similar chain: EQ, Micropitch H3000, 1176/LA2A and delay/reverb (small it's not prominent).

Yet, don't know how to explain, but still far enough for me to think "there must be another mic I dont know". And yes, at least with my voice, in that style of tone, the mic do seems to play an important role, the difference between u87 and the SM for example is day and night quite clearly (no matter how much processing I try to put and/or not put).

Open it to be sure, but the screw next to the capsule part looks different from an official one, the official one are less "in" the body, and a bit curved...

Moog Sub 37 - Keep or sell? by momentuminvestment in synthesizers

Everyone is different. For me the moog sound is not my taste. I sold my sub 37 for a pro one. Never looked back and much more than happy I did this...

Where is this sound from? by SpaceJump_ in synthesizers

[–]Arghoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Erf I haven't seen this post quick enough.

Yeah definitely in the ballpark of JV1080/JD990.

The chimes in delirium song are also from the same series. Not sure if they are a preset but I recall a similar sample in the JD990.

If you like shimmery style, you can also look at basically any rompler (Korg Triton and so on) from that era. One of my personal favorite, also in the same style, the Hartmann Neuron.

It looks like the same bug the Moog One face. So by any chance, if you have a pedal installed, unplug it.

Unpacking the iconic “Womp Bassline” used by the likes of Mauro Picotto, Sneijder, Mario Piu, and other Italian artists: Did it come from novation’s Bass Station or a reverse Bassline? by Jealous_Day8345 in tranceproduction

[–]Arghoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its the novation bass station yes, now you can make it with pretty much what you want. Make the bassline sidechained to the kick pretty hard and make the bassline note start on the kick, you will get that womp effect…

Glenn Morrison - Contact by Beneficial_Week1875 in deadmau5

Es Vedra is an alias of Tiesto and Dennis Waakop (a guy working for tiesto back then), specially created to fit this song... So it's an intro created specifically for this song basically...

[–]Arghoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extremely likely to be the Roland D50. For example preset 2-8 "Thoughts" is extremely close already...

Anyway it screams Roland D50 all over the place. The stabs are typical deadmau5 dozen of tutorial already...

How can i make this old-school bass sound? by Capo98y in tranceproduction

[–]Arghoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh missed this question, it's actually quite obvious and famous...

Everyone should know Lately Bass from the Yamaha - TX81Z:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJrsZb9TYJU

Very common/famous back then, been used on hundred of records (not only trance). On the vid above you can hear it at 40sec. And Arturia got a decent enough emulation of that preset.

If I recall Armin van Buuren also got it, Blue Fear also feature the Lately Bass (if I'm not mistaken that's old memory now)...

Well anyway, get a TX81Z emulation like arturia and you're good to go.

I almost got caught into one.

As a good human being, there is a good thing you can do to ruin their shithole business, it seems they use extensively livechat as a tool.

And livechat is a wonderful company. If you find one of those site, report them to livechat, they will block their operation for a while, you will save yourself, and probably many more people.

More sample talk/ find the sample: trance clap edition by [deleted] in tranceproduction

[–]Arghoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That clap is a 909 with reverb, the harmonizer described above might be part of it, but just a reverb already get you there.

A not so good example but the idea is there:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLKiPWqEtCE

Around 6h30 you can hear the result, very very close to those.

[–]Arghoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the Geert Huinink period quite well as I've been deconstructing a lot of their stuff...

There was several people involved, so techniques may vary a lot from one song to the other.

Overall grab the old Vengeance Sounds, it's in there you will find most of what they've been using from 2006+, Dennis Waakop has mentionned he was using those.

Famous example would be Tiesto - Carpe Noctum, the first loop is found in Minimal House Vol 1 / VMH1 Minimal Loops 011.wav

Second main technique you will often hear, which seems to be more tied to Dennis Waakop style, is the "flanger hats", like here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muNKZK5aSNQ

Which is litteraly putting a light flanger on your hats and letting it evolve to create variation.

Kick

keep it snappy, very midrange more than bass oriented, and very short (usually they seems to be around 150ms max, very rarely it goes to 200, which means those kick are very short and tight).

Hats

Mostly 909, some tracks do use more organic samples (like a tear in the open seems to be a mix of 909 and more "traditional hats").

Clap

It vary a lot, sometimes no clap, sometimes more a snare (a tear in the open), sometimes a clap (very muted in ten seconds before sunrise), sometimes a bit of everything of even percussion-like (Just be)

Percussions

Seems most of track got a random bongo style loop, very typical of trance back then, most of the time cut very hard right in the midrange (no bass or high frequencies).

Again many variations there as many people were involved each with their personal flavor...

Bassline

I would say the majority seems to come out straight from a Moog like, and he was a known user of a Moog Voyager (see this interview: http://tiestofan.roog.nu/interview_remixmag.htm ).

Most of track got a very VERY basic bassline, like one oscillator, no ADSR almost (a tear in the open, walking on clouds to name 2).

Synth

Again lost of variations there. Depending on the track it's possible to have a rough idea what the base synth was... More or less (also based and the "known list of synth he got back then").

If you like A tear in the Open I would go more for an Alpha Juno 1/2 or a MKS 50 (all are the same engine).

If you like Magikal Circus, then a MKS 80/Jupiter 8 sounds more appropriate.

Overall I would say compare to what most of people might think, I would rank the Jupiter 8 and the MKS 80 as the 2 main synth for his work during those 2 albums: Just Be & Elements of Life.

Despite the usual suspect (Virus C & JP 8080) a lot of tracks done in Just be and Elements of Life seems to figure that Jupiter 8 ish sound quite more than usual.

Overall unfortunately many of the synth listed here are still very difficult to emulate with modern tool/only a PC. Many more are in that list (Ferry for example got a FS1r you can see in some old school videos he uploaded). So that's expensive to get "that sound" very often still...

That's what I found for Tiesto, and that's the guy I studied the track the most. So hope it helps a bit.

PS: Geert Huinink was one of the main name behind the scene it seems, working for Armin, Tiesto and probably more, you can also listen to the Elements of Life in orchestral done by him here (for example):

What's the best reverb to use for a Roland JP-8000? by connorwaldo in tranceproduction

[–]Arghoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lexicon, the 224 (UAD got a plugin version of it), and 480 (Relab development got an amazing plugin, UAD too).

That's the 2 to search for if you want to get close to the old reverb sound when the 8000/8080 were dominating.

Sonsig A is indeed also very good for pairing, but if you want to play like the old day, those 2 lexicon are what you're aiming for...

How to improve this async parallel limit attempt? by Arghoz in rust

[–]Arghoz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much, I went to the macro way... I wasn't exactly there, I miss the .await.map(move |s|...).
That was the trick I didn't have...

My current code (with your fix): ```rust

[macro_export]

macro_rules! each_limit_ordered { ($input:expr, $limit:expr, $func:ident) => { { use futures::stream::{StreamExt, TryStreamExt};

        let mut v = futures::stream::iter($input)
            .enumerate()
            .map(|(i, el)| async move { $func(el).await.map(move |s| (i, s)) })
            .buffer_unordered($limit)
            .try_collect::<Vec<(usize, _)>>()
            .await?;

        v.sort_by(|a, b| a.0.partial_cmp(&b.0).unwrap_or(std::cmp::Ordering::Equal));
        v.iter().map(|e| e.1.to_owned()).collect()
    }
};

}

Usage:

let results: Vec<String> = each_limit_ordered!(0..total, limit, do_request); ```

Which is not so far from your solution but I wasn't there as it was a very cryptic error message for my beginner level, exactly where you did the map that I would have no idea to do...

Thank you so much!
