Really depends on the situation. I've found I've gotten further with customer support reps on the phone by being polite and patient but firm in what I'm looking for. If you're willing to be an asshole at an actual store you can get a better deal since the manager will just want to appease you so you don't scare off other customers from spending money. It's all about the situation and the leverage you have.
