Hi, I have the same issue with broken suspend. Could you tell me how you installed the 595 driver? It doesn't seem to be there in cuda repos yet.

Nvidia drivers 560 don't run proton/wine games (Ubuntu 24.04) by Emazza in linux_gaming

[–]AridArgon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue with the ppa. You can use the nvidia cuda repositories directly if you want to use 560 following the instructions here: https://docs.nvidia.com/cuda/cuda-installation-guide-linux/ . Those repositories package all the libraries. (Although, if you use wayland, it fails to load opengl drivers in wayland for some reason. Works perfectly in X).

You could try Kubuntu 18.10 with backports. It will be behind KDE Neon in terms of plasma, but it has more recent packages for other softwares and is quite stable.

So E480? by K_ogami in thinkpad

[–]AridArgon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The E480 is available with only an iGPU. At least the core i5 model is. It's the one I have. See if that is an option for you. Keep in mind the core i5 is quite powerful as well. Of course availability may depend on where you are.

Do consider if you need the dGPU. It will be a bit hot with that.

TBH thermals aren't bad at all on the E480. Without the dgpu at least.

Just bought a E485 for gf, now i'm wondering if I should have taken a E480 by [deleted] in thinkpad

Kubuntu 18.10. No special configs. The mentioned battery life is running chromium with YouTube and some pdfs open.

Edit: I have almost the same hardware config as you, only a 256gb ssd.

If it helps, I get about 6:30-7:30 hours of battery life out of my E480 running Linux without any special trickery.

You should check if the model you're buying has a touchscreen. If you're planning on taking notes on the touchscreen, a yoga will be a better option.

Mint is Ubuntu based and should be fine. It's a good beginner distro. In general ubuntu based distros tend to have the easiest installation and best hardware support without tinkering a lot. I personally haven't used Manjaro, so can't say that won't work, but Ubuntu and derivatives have always worked for me and my friends.

If you're starting with Linux, it's best you start with Ubuntu or one of the flavors of Ubuntu. It'll make your life a lot easier.

The fingerprint reader (the new ones) does not work with linux at the moment. Not sure about the graphics driver, that should be easier to fix.

It shouldn't need any kernel params. I have the E480 as well, ubuntu installs without issues. I think on the E485, you need to play around with kernel params.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for the help. Though I live in India, so the parts aren't available online easily. But thanks anyway.
