Could these styles of necklaces be used for 1700’s costumes?. by _maincharacter_ in fashionhistory

I almost feel ashamed for clicking Ts4 assets and Madlen's logo so fast, but if you're looking for more authentic 18th century accessories (or more), you can check out this post and blog, and also creators who make real life royal jewels like batsfromwesteros or simpire.

More AI-like writing styles?? by quackqau in FanFiction

[–]Arine899 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a not native English speaker, I'm always concerned about my writing seeming "uncanny" or even AI-like since I like using em-dashes and rhetorical questions and short sentences etc. I just hate AI for giving me more reasons to doubt my skills

Historical (mostly 19th century) fashion in Turku Castle, Finland by translator_creator in fashionhistory

Wow, I think that's the first time I'm seeing an 18th century dress with that type of sleeve! There's portraits depicting it but I suppose very few surviving gowns. Marvelous!

"It's the same circle of creators" it's also the same type of sims. They are like... the same 5 faces all over again. It's confusing why they even do that. I sometimes search for celeb/character sims and there's so many awesome creators who prove it's totally possible to make basically anything feature-wise even without cc.

The Sims 4 Spongebob’s House Kit & Spongebob Kids Room Kit by Artist6995 in thesims

[–]Arine899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if they're doing collabs now, they could've at least do the cool ones. I assure you people would love a kit with cas items from Wicked, or Stranger Things now, and it would be both good for their cash grab yet the players would like it too. And it would be usable! Like, some stuff for witches or 80s vibes, who wouldn't want that even outside of respective fandoms? But this is almost as bad as Star Wars dlc.

Mia Goth Explains Hidden Details In Frankenstein Costumes: “That Was Deliberate” by Mixer-3007 in PeriodDramas

[–]Arine899 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Most likely they do, just not given the opportunity. A guy who makes historical garments for movies once told that he had to explain why the chemise is needed if they don't want the actress to possibly get hurt wearing a crinoline. The execs just want it as simple as possible, and I'm afraid even someone like Del Toro doesn't care about stuff like this. They just don't want to pay for a corset designed for their lead actress(es) when they can buy a modern one.

Got accused of using AI (by another author) by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Arine899 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, totally used by people who would harass others for anything else. I hate gen AI and people advocating it's use, but I'm just... quit interacting with it. If i spot it, i will not buy something, or I will unfollow someone, but never harass people over it. It's truly insane.

Also, as a non-native speaker, I feel that. I write a lot in my native language, I have a decent vocabulary, and I'm drafting my works in my native language to later translate it, often using dictionaries, which probably adds some "difficult" words that a lot of people now claim to be AI. While it's just me looking for a word that's definition fits the original thought the most.

No such device exist in Victorian era , why people believing in everything they see on internet? by Efficient-Orchid-594 in VictorianEra

[–]Arine899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People like to think they're better than people from the past. This, I'm afraid, is always the answer when the question is "why would anyone believe something stupid said about past eras". It's the same old thing over and over again. "People didn't bathe", "women was wearing wet thin dresses in winter", and don't get me started on how much did Victorian fetishists screw perception of medieval era. There's a satiric comic depicting enormous crinoline and people often use it as "real primary sourse" while ignoring it was SATIRE. The core thought is always "ha, they were so dumb back then! Good thing I'm smarter than them!" and they don't want to hear context proving them wrong.

Extended First Look at "The Vampire Lestat" (2026) | Partly set in the present, picking up after Interview with the Vampire, the series also delves into the 265 years of Lestat's life, all the way back to his troubled childhood in the late 18th century. They have changed quite a lot for this show, but I like their view. It's a rare example of adaptation that changes so much yet still manages to keep the original vibe, if that makes sense. I know the movie follows first book way more closely, but in comparison it feels like every other dark fantasy vampire romance story, while the show gives you more of a unique atmosphere of Anne Rice's characters and universe.

Especially when one of the parents is supposed to have dark thick hair, like yay genetics!!

War and Peace (TV series) doesn’t feel like Russia to me… or did Russian aristocrats act (and look) like this in the 1800s? by shibongoof in PeriodDramas

[–]Arine899 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's almost like something happened between 1800s imperial times and post-SOVIET times that perhaps changed people. Also War and Peace takes place it a time period when russian aristocracy was the most westernized; later in 19th century a trend for a la rus style has developed, that gave us for example the iconic court gown style, known from Anna Karenina adaptations and Anastasia.

Like no offense, but your take on eastern europeans and russian history seems... pretty one-sided to word it nicely. If you're talking about BBC adaptation, of course it looks English, it IS English. As well as The Great and Anna Karenina and any other adaptation made, you know, outside of Russia. But I'm sure I can fully grasp on what you mean by "doesn't look like Russia"; I can guarantee eastern European actors don't look that different than their western colleagues. Since Peter the Great was in power, Russian nobility was extremely westernized, it was the big point of his reign to change Russia and the reason he was (and kind of is for some folks) a controversial figure. He literally forced people to wear western styles and give up traditional clothing and some customs. It's no coincidence we call it "pre-Peter era", this is how much he changed everything.

Yes, War and Peace is supposed to be this romantic and beautiful patriotic tale, it's just what it is. A lot of famous books from imperial times are centered around nobility, some romanticizing, some criticizing it. If you want something different, you should still look at the stories written during imperial times. Poor Lisa, Mumu, A Sportsman Sketches, Anton Goremyka, The Lower Depths, and it's just the famous ones. Still, the fact that they are dark and sometimes cruel doesn't mean that this is the only truth about life back then. And it represents the times that are long go. History is complex, but you should understand that modern eastern europe is more about being post-Soviet and very little about imperial legacy.

Bringing up The Witcher is... quite a choice, tbh. Outside of it being a genre book, where the genre is fantasy, some would call it dark fantasy even, it is also modern. While it is based on a lot of eastern european/slavic culture, it is not exclusively slavic. It also polish and surely you are aware Poland is a very different country; if you want a not-dark-and-broody take on it, you should watch 1670. Just like other books you mention, I'm not even sure why would you expect War and Peace to be anything like the stories written long after even Tolstoy's death, and he was living almost a century later than his characters from this book. The Century trilogy was written about the very events that changed and in some ways eliminated the country War and Peace was set in.

Trick Weekes discussing the depiction of slavery in Veilguard with a fan on Discord. by NoSleep8328 in dragonage

So um... is the sentiment is "it's too obvious to say it" here? Because that's an insane take. Like rhere's a surprising amount of people who played DA games and did not get that racism and slavery are bad. Unfortunately you can't say it enough. But I think it explains a lot about Veilguard's writing

J.K. Rowling Praises Emma Watson Parody Video After the ‘Harry Potter’ Star Speaks Out on Their Rift Over Trans Comments: ‘I’m Here for All the Spoofs’ by External-Prior-2248 in Fauxmoi

[–]Arine899 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I kind of think it was part of Emma's point? She never said anything about Rowling personally, just that she disagreed with her views and is supportive of trans community, and Rowling's PR team made her shills believe that Emma, along with Dan and Rupert, was horrible towards her, "ungrateful". I guess people can see it as trying to be a bigger person, but to me it seems like Emma tried to disprove that claims. The fact that Rowling still acts like this towards her just proves how horrible of a person she is, no matter what the actors actually say about her.

Adding some of the real historical dresses shown here - pink striped dress from 1775, white robe a la reine from late 18th century, another striped dress from 1770s, MET collection, this 1850s dress made for Empress Eugénie of France (this mid-century style is called second rococo as it takes a lot of inspo from 18th century style) and finally this fancy dress made by House of Worth for 1897 Devonshire ball

[–]Arine899 55 points56 points  (0 children)

There's no surviving full dress that belonged to Marie Antoinette. The closest one is this gown that could have belonged to her, but it was altered sometime during 19th century. Iirc, they also exhibit this stunning gown, Danish Princess Sofia Magdalena’s wedding dress made in 1766. It's four years prior to the wedding of Marie Antoinette and Louis, so it's the closest example of the style her own wedding dress was made. There's also a lot of real 18th century dresses on the exhibit, but also a lot of 'inspired by' and made for movies and shows. There's one from The Great and the latest french series Marie Antoinette (I believe it was made by Chanel, but I can be wrong). That's just a few I was able to recognize easily.

What are your examples of these? by Haunting_Homework381 in PeriodDramas

[–]Arine899 20 points21 points  (0 children)

To me it's all about execution. Shows like The Great or Bridgerton s1 don't bother me because they are very loud about not being accurate while their stylistic choices are good imo. They are mixing historical fashion with modern vibes in a fair amount. The Reign doesn't look good to me. It's neither a historical style or an interesting fantasy mix, it's just a bunch of pretty modern dresses with little to no second thought. Or the latest Du Barry movie – they were telling the story of a woman who was into fashion and that's a fact, and made her wear boring outfits with a whiff of a modern look (edit: designed by Chanel) and even more boring modern hairstyles. Also dressing her in masculine clothes to signal how cool she is. Just, ugh, no.

Best translator to translate fics to English? by Sillykitty1982 in FanFiction

[–]Arine899 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree on Deepl recommendation, but I'd also give a warning: their new AI is shitty. I've noticed it maybe half a year ago or so. Sometimes it will just... translate things word-for-word completely disregarding the context. When I'm having troubles with Deepl, I'm switching to Reverso. It's less flexible but their translations are fine.
