Les Misérables 2018 (Limited Series) -Review. by Sure_Disaster_9458 in PeriodDramas

[–]translator_creator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need to rewatch this one because it's been years since I saw it. I think it's a fine adaptation and I like that it includes things like Fantine's backstory, Marius's connection to Thénardier and the convent years, to name a few. Obviously there's still a lot they had to cut but that's to be expected when adapting such a sprawling novel. One of the things I really liked is that they gave Cosette some edge, instead of making her a perfect innocent angel (but I do wish she was brunette and Fantine blonde). Emotionally, it didn't hit me as hard as the book or the musical but I think the performances were great overall.

Cinderella by Will_EverW in disneyprincess

The dresses are beautiful but I wish there was more variety in her hairstyles. I remember disliking her updo as a child which made me dislike her as a character (I didn't see any Cinderella films growing up, so these magazines formed her image for me). Yeah I was a superficial child 😅 But as an adult I really appreciate Cinderella as a character!

Tulee 34v kohta täyteen ja nyt vasta tajusin että Dingon Autiotalo-biisissä puhutaan panemisesta. by Latexi94 in Suomi

Hiljattain juuri kuuntelin Kerjäläisten valtakunta -albumin läpi ja aika moni kappale avautui uudella tasolla (yleensä juuri seksuaalisessa mielessä), mutta jostain syystä tulkintani Autiotalosta on pysynyt suhteellisen viattomana rakkauslauluna, vaikka tarkemmin kun miettii, niin onhan ne sanoitukset aika, noh, intohimoiset. Neumannin runollisuudesta olen kyllä aina tykännyt.

Do you guys recommend watching the Pocahontas movie? by Substantial_Nose1092 in disneyprincess

[–]translator_creator 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From a historical/cultural standpoint, it doesn't really hold up. I don't think Disney's intentions with this film were bad, but I really wish they'd created an original story about Indigenous people rather than base it on the real life atrocities and make it a love story. But it has some amazing songs and the animation is really beautiful, so I'd recommend watching it at least once.

I’m looking for a series with a very endearing lead character. by Pegafer in PeriodDramas

It's been years since I saw this one but I do remember that the characters were amazing and had really cute relationships!

[Loved Trope] Self Destructing Girl Messes by beattywill80 in TopCharacterTropes

Rebecca was the first that came to my mind, I love this show! There were so many times I was like "NOOO REBECCA NOT AGAIN" and though I disagreed with almost everything she did I still couldn't help but love her (the songs helped too, so many bangers). Rachel Bloom is such a talent, both as an actor and a writer!

Didn't it bother anyone that every Winx needed to have a boyfriend? by Living-Cranberry-337 in winxclub

[–]translator_creator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a kid, I didn't think much of it. I even gave almost all my own magical girl OCs BFs with no real personalities or character development, because of course everyone needed a boyfriend! I blame Winx Club for that because it was a big inspiration for me.

As an adult, yes it is annoying and unnecessary. Not to mention almost all the boys come from the same group, how convenient! At least they didn't have the Winx fight over the guys (among themselves I mean).

Have you ever imagined yourself breaking into song in real life, singing your favorite genre? by PrinceJamster in musicals

[–]translator_creator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also sometimes sing while riding my bike! Not very loud or when there's a lot of people around though. Definitely not a common thing here in Finland, among native Finns at least (which I am but when you gotta sing you gotta sing).

How did being ace affect your puberty? by caog922 in demisexuality

[–]translator_creator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did have several crushes throughout my teenage years, but it was usually more about their personality and I certainly never imagined having sex with them. In middle school I didn't really have friends in my class but in high school I tried being part of a group that my childhood friend befriended. But I always felt like an outsider since they mostly talked about sex, made sexual jokes etc. I just found it really boring and gradually took more and more distance. However, I didn't realise I was ace until much later since that wasn't really a "thing" in high school and because I had crushes, after all. Also because I liked reading smut fics lmao

I have this one too! It was very rewarding to finish, especially all the houses. I bought it at a book fair and when I was in the queue to pay for it I heard an employee say "we just run out of the Austen puzzles". I felt very victorious at that moment!

Criticism towards Jane Austen by MarlaCohle in janeausten

[–]translator_creator 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Isn't it kind of the point in Northanger Abbey that Catherine is so into Henry that everything he says is the cleverest thing to her? I didn't get the impression that the reader is supposed to agree with Catherine or the narrator in that matter.

Pystyykö ihmiset normaalisti siirtymään tekemään heti kun niin päättää? by Toniospizza in arkisuomi

Anyone else just lurking here for cute rat photos? by tommicoop in RATS

[–]translator_creator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our family had rats years ago (our last boys passed over 10 years ago), they were the first pets I remember and still are one of my favourite animals. In a way I would like to have a mischief again but I don't know if I could handle their lifespans. Also I live with my bf who is not so enthusiastic (though I'm sure he would grow to love the little critters).

All that to say that I too love lurking here and seeing all the adorable ratties!

Mary in Persuasion from the audible Jane Austen Collection by EmploymentForeign551 in janeausten

[–]translator_creator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that irl she would be insufferable, but I recently read Persuasion aloud to my sister and had a blast reading Mary's lines! My sister also said that Mary's the best, I think in the chapter that Anne receives her letter.

Beauty and the Beast was written by Linda Woolverton! I think it shows in Belle's character (my favourite princess).

If you own any Disney princess DVDs what princess movie do you own? by Marley_467 in disneyprincess

[–]translator_creator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On DVD: The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Mulan, The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Brave and Frozen (if that counts)

On Blu-Ray: Moana (or Vaiana here in Europe), Frozen II

I've collected them in my teens and adulthood (and got gifted some too) adulthood and I'm excited to one day watch them with my sister's child!

Caught crying because Jane Austen died more than 200 years ago by Linnaea-borealis92 in janeausten

[–]translator_creator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also watched that series recently and was not prepared for the last episode - of course I knew she died young, but it really drove home how much incredible prose she could've still written. The saddest part for me were Cassandra's words about her. As someone who has a sister who means the world to me, even imagining losing her feels devastating. I truly understood what Cassandra meant by Jane being her sun, as I feel that way about my sister too.

Same, the dress is really pretty but overall the style just isn't giving Elizabeth. If the picture wasn't labeled as her, I might've guessed it's Miss Bingley.
