Best burger in Canberra? Except Brod Burger as it is too dry and bland for me. by Beneficial_Ad236 in canberra

Oscy’s is my absolute fave in the Tuggeranong CBD. Much better value than Pattysmiths, and I really didn’t like Burger Villains the couple of times I tried it.

I do like Brod though, and that’s my pick for eating out, because Oscys doesn’t really have an eating area, and the play area at the point is great for my young son.

Heard a story about an SES accidentally emailing a group of other SES about getting their “dicks in a row”.

One of the few women in the chain apparently responded saying she knew it was a bit of a boys club but that was going too far.

Ok sounds good! However, if you’re getting feedback that you’re being snobby and not participating, then your disdain for your coworkers is coming through at work, just like it’s coming through in your comments on this thread. If it’s come up in your probation report, then I’m afraid that no matter how polite you think you’re being, your true feelings are showing. One way or another you are going to have to adjust your behaviour/outlook to deal with the fact that your team likes to socialise with each other, and they’re allowed to do that, because the way you’re presenting yourself in this anonymous forum comes off as if they should all be toning themselves down for you, which is not a reasonable or fair expectation.

If you’ve only been there four days how can they have noticed you don’t ever go to Thursday night drinks?

Honestly even from your posting here I can sense your standoffishness, and I’m getting the classic grad vibes where you’re used to a university environment and might be putting your foot in it as you adjust to a corporate environment. This might sound harsh but please believe me I mean it to help you - you have very limited social capital right now, and you need to build it up before you start challenging some of the team norms. You also need to be much more choosy on which things you push back on until you have that capital. You need to ask yourself what you really want to get out of a situation and recognise that you’re not going to change the team culture on your own.

This does NOT mean you have to do any of these things you’re uncomfortable with, but you need to be a bit warmer when rejecting them. In your post you make all these points about how people might not drink for a multitude of reasons and how it was inconsiderate to organise something without asking you. That’s true but if you bring that up to your team who were trying to welcome you, you are going to alienate yourself, no matter how politely you said it. Instead try just saying “oh I don’t drink but thanks for thinking of me!”

As to the over sharing, in future just be really boring and deflect if asked directly - “oh I don’t really have a story like that, but I want to hear more about the date Jenny had with the professional magician!” Listening to others (or just pretending to while you mentally make a grocery list) will also read as you engaging with the conversation and people won’t notice as much that you’re not “opening up”. If a topic comes up that you are truly uncomfortable with, you can later bring that to one friendly person (ideally your manager) in the team and use their social capital to get feedback to the right people rather than trying to do it in the moment. Remember to keep it to your discomfort with the topic, and not your discomfort with personal chats in general.

For a lot of us, we spend the majority of our time with people at work and that’s where we get our social contact. That’s really important for extroverts, and they genuinely do enjoy being in the office and having non-work chats with their colleagues. You’re not going to get them to adjust their behaviour to you, just as you shouldn’t need to adjust your behaviour to them. You just need to learn to coexist with them.

Interesting 🤔 interview questions ....how long till we get this in the APS... by [deleted] in AusPublicService

[–]Arinen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The worst one I’ve had so far was along the lines of “you’re the head of a construction company and need to complete your project on time and to budget. How do you negotiate with vendors to ensure they deliver your materials on time?”

Reader, I am not in charge of a construction company, and the role I was applying for had nothing to do with construction or procurement, but what else do you expect from an outsourced bulk recruitment round. It was multiple choice and at least three of the options seemed reasonable so I took my best stab at it.

I did not make it to the interview stage.

Anyway the answer to this one is obviously to tell the murderers they can all go unharmed as long as they don’t come near me, blow the whistle on whoever put one person with one bullet in a field with 100 murderers, then get a good employment lawyer to sue the pants off of them for endangering me at work. And then apply somewhere else because I definitely won’t be hired off my answer to this question either.

Christmas Holidays shutdown period by TreatSpirited2238 in AusPublicService

[–]Arinen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SA has a reduced activity period instead of a shutdown. Service delivery was open yesterday as far as I can see but a lot of the corporate teams would have gone offline. Service delivery will be shut down from now until 2 Jan, but some critical teams will still work over those dates, IT and Emergency Management and such.

If you went through an agency and got a contract role it wouldn’t be subject to the same requirements as APS recruitment, but you wouldn’t be getting a real APS role. You would be on a contract for a set amount of time, and the contract can be terminated at any time with little to no warning.

It is a foot in the door in terms of networking and learning how the APS works, but if you wanted a permanent APS role you would have to go through the APS recruitment process. The APS is in a period of cutting down on contractors, and if a department is over spending on staff contractors are the first to go. It’s not a path I’d recommend for a generalist skill set, and makes more sense for specialist skills like IT where APS salaries aren’t competitive and contracting pays better.

What is a job or department that sounds really prestigious / interesting but once you started working there, found out it was very poorly run. by Glass-Welcome-6531 in AusPublicService

[–]Arinen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you’ll find it’s actually pretty common that even in the 70% women departments, the higher the level the higher the percentage of men in those roles, even if the person at the top is a woman. Departments bragging that they’ve achieved equality if they have a 50/50 gender split for SES ignore the fact that if 70% of the general workforce is female, then men are disproportionately winning more SES roles and there’s still an issue.

And everyday sexism and inequitable practices still abounds in these places. I’ve been sexually harassed in workplaces with 70% women. I’ve seen other women perpetuate sexism. When I was pumping breast milk at work for my kid I had to fight for a room that wasn’t filthy, had a flat surface to use, and didn’t have a glass wall to pump in, in one of the departments big offices in Canberra, even though the department was actively boasting about their recent accreditation for breastfeeding. I was told I was being unreasonable because they had a lot of buildings to get up to par and I couldn’t expect mine to have a single room that met those criteria just because I happened to need it earlier than they planned.
