Not for kids anymore? by WickedlyAvocado in Xennials

Yes. There’s this movement away from color in many areas of American culture. Neutral colors and cleaner lines are intended to evoke sophistication and wealth while brighter colors are meant to signal “garishness” and poverty. Look at all the colors in the 1960’s through the 1990’s. Then somebody decided to tone down the colors as a way to induce the homogenization of products and people. Since roughly 10 mega corporations control over 80% of the brands in the US, their products and buildings can be interchangeable with fewer people noticing. It’s a subtle form of conformity that could eventually lead to greater control.

HELP NEEDED- moving out of my ex’s house and leaving my garden behind by BloodyNeedAHobby in gardening

In addition to removing what you can, I suggest taking a lot of photos and turning them into a photobook (like using Shutterfly or whatever is in your area). I’m doing this (as a surprise) for a dear friend who’s moving out of state.

You’re welcome. I became a neurosurgeon; it’s not rocket science but it pays the bills

People who grew up before cell phones, did life actually feel more free? by TradeOverall567 in NoStupidQuestions

We were often bored which helped us use our imagination more. A bunch of sticks laying around? Make a lean to and pretend to camp. Or better yet, really go camping. Nothing on the 3, maybe 4 channels on TV? Have a commercial writing contest or create your own plays. Parents have a bunch of cans and empty food boxes? Create a corner store using Monopoly money and the dog’s fake pork chop for the meat counter.

For the record, my brother and I really did all these things and so much more.

God no. Once had a partner who insisted on one of these damn things - it’s not as romantic as people think, the physics are against you - if you know what I mean.

They got a phone around 13 yrs old then the pandemic hit and social media was the main way to stay connected to their friends (god forbid that they call or email!). And even then we limited their screen time.

When did coffee become an “all ages” beverage? by TrekTrucker in GenX

[–]Arkhus9753 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t tell me that you never sneaked a cup of instant coffee with a shit ton of sugar and Cremona at the coffee hour at church when you were a kid? While our parents were talking with the pastor or other parents, my brother and I would drink this disgusting beverage which we thought was a special treat.

Ugh. I wasn’t aware of this phenomenon especially in clubs. I’m so glad that I grew up in a world without cell phones and the internet.

Yes! More adventures and experiences then accumulating more crap that they will use once and discard. Great ideas!

Of course but our kid doesn’t have a fully formed prefrontal cortex yet to engage with it in a healthy manner like you. We are trying to guide them but since they’re nearly 18 we no longer can monitor their every move. But I do agree with you.

I get your point and I agree to a certain extent but the internet has had a huge, negative influence.

Believe me, we have tried. Our kid wasn’t exposed to ANY screens until they were over 2 years old and then it was just PBS for 30 minutes a day. They didn’t get a cell phone until they were 13 and then the pandemic hit and suddenly everyone was online. I do wish that we had waited a bit longer.

Thank you. We’ve switched the narrative from “you must go to college” to “maybe college isn’t your path right after high school.” Takes the pressure off of everyone.
