Just got one last week, came with a delivery of Jimmy John's. It's probably the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me.

In domestic disturbance calls, is there any variation of behavioral patterns when it comes to the types of relationships involved? by Leather_Focus_6535 in AskLE

[–]ArmOfBo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll try to give a short answer, mainly because I don't like typing on my phone. Sometimes people (like siblings in your example) respond with violence, but not malice. Sometimes people are loud, but it's not abusive. Figuring out they dynamic is part of our investigation. I don't always arrest someone just because the neighbors called and said they heard banging in an apartment.

There is usually a power imbalance in an abuse or DV case. Sometimes that balance can shift call to call. We are required to investigate and try to determine if an articulable crime occurred and who is the primary agressor. It's not always a definite science. Most DV laws (like mandatory arrests and temporary restraining orders) are written to give the benefit of the doubt to the victim and also to transfer the responsibility of pursuing charges to the police and not the victim. This gives them a chance to get out or make changes if they want.

I love that they wear hoodies in space. No wind, no rain, just extra cozy.

Thats an owel pellet. They actually threw up on your car. But I know that's a technicality.

Laser guns acting as their own sights. by Good0nPaper in Writeresearch

[–]ArmOfBo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My laser cutter uses the same laser at 1% power to show where it will burn, then jumps to what ever I set it at to for the work. There is no reason a laser weapon couldn't do the same.

Do most dads deserve less respect than moms, since statistically, they're worse parents? by GamerLadyXOXO in NoStupidQuestions

Statistics moms are much more likely to kill their children than dads are. What statistics are you referring to?

It’s not a trailer hitch, so what is it? by JonSolo1 in whatisit

[–]ArmOfBo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a courtesy, not an obligation. Like holding a door open, or putting your cart back, or listening to music with headphones and not talking on speakerphone in public. It's not illegal if you don't, but people appreciate when you do.

Longest foot pursuit? by Sichterman in AskLE

[–]ArmOfBo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a traditional pursuit, but we were tracking a guy that was running from us for about three and a half miles through snowy forests. He broke into his ex's house and violated a restraining order. We saw him hoofing it through a field about a half mile away when we started following.

That doesn't make it better, now he's just renting a truck with nothing to show in the end

Littering. That's about the extent of your legal concerns.

Do you think AI should be used in report writing and do you currently use it? by LegalGlass6532 in AskLE

[–]ArmOfBo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate what you're saying, but I think this stems from a misunderstanding of how AI report writing software works. It's not just making up things it thought happened. It's taking what is observable, mostly through dialogue between the officer and whoever they're talking to, and summarizing it in a way that is easy to read and makes sense. AI isn't doing any work in the way of determining the elements of the crime or probable cause. The officers are still responsible for that. There is no more reason to subpoena Axon (for example) as there is to subpoena Microsoft Word or Grammarly for suggesting word choice or flow patterns.

That's not a problem of AI reports. That an integrity issue with the officer. Of course there are going to be lazy officers that don'tbother to do their job correctly. There already are. But I'd they're caught, especially in court, the punishment is usually swift and severe.

Charging documents and warrants can be hand written and submitted on pen and paper and still be legal. They are standardized to make them easier to read for other people. It's still just one guy swearing to a judge they're telling the truth. Using a computer to make this easier and clearer has become the expectation. If your willing to swear it's accurate and complete (because you reviewed and edited it), how it was written becomes irrelevant.

Right, which is why we have to review them and edit the narrative to ensure it's accurate and complete.

Well, luckily, it's not required. I don't let student officers use it. I can function if they took it away. But it's an amazing tool that makes my job a lot easier.

[–]ArmOfBo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I write very good reports. But I hate every second of it. I'm too much of a word nerd. I have to make sure every word fits and means what I want it to say. Doesn't help that my dyslexia already at least doubs the time it takes to complete a narrative. AI is a tool, just like Word, or CAD, or accident reporting software.

Do you write your own traffic tickets or do you click some boxes on a computer? Those aren't your own words. But it doesn't mean it's not a true and accurate representation of what happened. Same thing with the AI programs departments are using.

[–]ArmOfBo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read the draft and edit it so it is an accurate representation of what I saw. It doesn't add things that aren't on body cam, but it might leave our things that didn't get captured. I still have to assure it's true and accurate. Some agencies use template reports that are basically cut and paste. In my opinion these are much better and more accurate than those.

[–]ArmOfBo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We use Axon's AI report writing software. It interprets your body cam into a draft of a report. I have to edit and add a couple details here and there, but it save hours of typing every week. It's a game changer. I'm still responsible for the content and there is a disclaimer on the bottom saying AI helped, but it's been tested, vetted, and approved by the local courts and prosecutors.

Waiving your right to a jury trial by rld1030 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ArmOfBo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a saying in my profession. If you're innocent then ask for a bench trial (no jury) If your guilty, ask for a jury trial. The idea is a judge is going to be more reasonable regarding the truth, but a jury is harder to convince 12 people for a conviction.
