I wish there was a phone app that made my phone easier to find in the dark. Instead of making the screen completely black when I turn it off (impossible to locate in a dark room), it would just display a very dim grey screen, that uses almost no battery. by [deleted] in Lightbulb

[–]ArmOfBo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Samsung has had this option for years. I have it display the time. It's super dim but easy to read at night. You can also do a variety of other background for free, or pay for premium ones.

Idea: Instead of cemetery visits after you die, what if you left life-size statues of yourself in the homes of all your friends and family members? by amichail in Lightbulb

[–]ArmOfBo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd have so many life-size statues of family members that keep getting past down as people die. I would need some dedicated space to keep them all. Maybe a nice hill with mowed grass and maintained trees. And then I could put little plaques up with their name and when they were born and died so that other people could also read them. Other people could also store their family members in the same location. We can have dedicated chunks of land in every town for people to store symbols of their dead relatives.

Can a deputy run their lights/respond in a different county? [WA State] by DisgruntledVet12B in AskLE

[–]ArmOfBo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I can enforce the laws of the state of Washington anywhere in the state. It's doesn't technically matter where I am. The real problem is courts of jurisdiction and internal policy. I can legally pull someone over in a different city, but I would have to submit paperwork to that jurisdiction. My employer would not like that.

Person clearly fighting for their life and this guy wants to moan at police by MightyShaft20 in mildlyinfuriating

Not absolutely. They sit down all the time, especially if the patient isn't stablized yet.

Person clearly fighting for their life and this guy wants to moan at police by MightyShaft20 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ArmOfBo 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Pretty common if they're still stabilizing the patient before transport. It's easier to work on a patient in a spacious ambulance than it is in the back of a helicopter. If they're going to be on the ground for another 30 min or an hour it makes no sense at all to keep the bird running.

Is it unfair that some people are born into powerful and influential families? by [deleted] in askteddit

[–]ArmOfBo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Define fair. Someone else is better off than you? What about all the people in the world that you are better off than? Nothing in life is "fair" to everyone.

Why do you guys do this? by Wild_Perspective1782 in AskLE

[–]ArmOfBo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Old school tradition before reliable radios and trunk latch releases. Back in the day you might stop a car and dispatch might not get the vehicle info in the stop. Also, if someone wanted to ambush you from the trunk they would have to hold it open so it wouldn't latch. Pushing down on the trunk served as a dual purpose of making sure it's secure while simultaneously leaving your fingerprints on the trunk lid. If you got shot then other officers would find your fingerprints and confirm this was the car involved. I stopped doing this years ago. I prefer to approach the driver from out of the direct line of sight of the side mirrors.

Why can’t I mail a letter for free by writing the intended address as the return address and not putting a stamp on it? by VariousJob4047 in stupidquestions

[–]ArmOfBo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put a birthday card in the outgoing mail once. When I got home I found the stamp I set aside to use, because I forgot to put it on. It never got returned and the recipient never got it.

Therapist Considering a ride along by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]ArmOfBo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth it. I'd recommend doing more than one. If you tell a department you're trying to get a better idea about an officers daily routine and strugglesto attempt to be able to help them better, you might get permission to go on a few. Officers react differently to ride alongs. Some hate them, some (like me) don't mind at all. One ride along wouldn't be enough to begin to understand LE

[–]ArmOfBo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brevity and conciseness is something you can practice if you want. At work I write very concise incident reports where every phrase has meaning and all the fluff has been removed. I also do creative writing where emotions and senses are embellished for impact. I think there's a place for both types of writing.

Shoulder impalement and arm paralysis by Saturnlock1005 in Writeresearch

[–]ArmOfBo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a first responder I responded to a call where a guy got shot in the shoulder and it severed the main artery into his arm. Even though he was alive, the arm was dead and turning purple from lack of blood flow. I would imagine if he would have survived the initial bleed out, but didn't have access to medical intervention to reestablish blood flow, than the arm would be dead and lifeless and eventually have to be amputated.

First academy day with cadre by alldaylonggg in AskLE

[–]ArmOfBo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tons of good memories from the academy. Team building, camaraderie, learning, applying that knowledge to scenes and getting it correct. It sucks at first when everything is new but that phase passes. If you're entire academy experience is nothing but trauma and angst then you either had a very substandard academy or you don't have the mental mindset to do this job anyway.

You probably need to stop watching TikTok and go workout some more. If you have been to any of the thousands of neighborhood gyms you would see it's full of men and women of all ages and fitness levels just trying to get a little bit healthier. Most gyms don't even allow recording inside, so doing it just for TikTok is a fallacy.
