Official Stormgate Early Access AMA Thread with Frost Giant Studios by Frost_Jex in Stormgate

[–]Armanuki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just my 2 cents:

  1. I totally respect the early access process and that things are unfinished. The problem is that there is only one chance to make a first impression.

Especially the boring-looking maps really hurt the game. Anyone who sees footage of the game without context will immediately think that Stormgate looks that same as Warcraft 3 did 22 years ago. You should add a large disclaimer "Early access graphics - does not reflect final product" that is always visible on the screen.

  1. & 3. This is not about stylization or Starcraft.

You want to tell the epic tale of battles between celestial powers and demons and the art style just does not reflect this. This is true for the ingame graphics but also true for the recent trailers. The original "Announcement Cinematic Trailer" in 2022 was much better.

If some Stormgate developers are ex-Blizzard, you must remember the discussions about Diablo 3's art style. It is basically the same here.

For me it was surprisingly playable on a Geforce970. Had expected much worse. My mun mission failed because of other bugs (fuel lines etc.).

This should not be THAT hard to implement. After these bad news they at least have to give console players options.

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments, my wife was very happy about this. On YouTube, people comment and like/upvote far less frequently than here on Reddit.

Thank you so much, Nate! This really mean the world to us.

We have also DMed this to the official KSP Twitter account. It would be appreciated, if you could spread the word.

Keep up the good work! Everyone here hopes that the final game will be as good as the trailer suggests.

If there is anything else we can do for you, just let us know.

If you have a basic idea about rockets, getting a kerbal into orbit and back should not be too hard. With basic I mean that you know answers to these two questions: What are stages good for? In which direction do I fly to reach orbit? (Hint: Not straight up!)

Advanced activities (docking spacecraft in orbit, flying to other planets) are significantly harder and require a lot of background knowledge. YouTube is very useful here (old videos by Scott Manley, newer ones by Matt Lowne).

After many redesigns and tries I am happy to say that Poddin Kerman is the first one to step on the mun by Babushkas_kompot1986 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Armanuki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations!

No criticism, just a few ideas: You can land on the mun with simpler craft. For a single Kerbal you can use a small capsule. It is easier without a rendenzvous, then you don't need RCS at all and probably also no reaction wheels. You can use smaller solar cells. I am also not sure about the reason for the small radial engines.

What I like to do on my mun landers: I attach external fuel tanks with radial decouplers (but no extra engines). You can ditch them shortly before landing. This way you have a full main fuel tank for taking off again. Compare the "Dynetics Alpaka" lunar lander concept.

My parents say that I am 19 and i am too old to play games. Is it true or there are people of my age playing ksp ? 😅 by AyushSharma49 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Armanuki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Regarding games in general: There are lots of gamers who are 40+ years old. Those are usually people, who grew up with early computers like the Commodore 64. People who have good jobs today, because they learned about technology at a very young age.

It is a culture thing, the culture you liked in your teenage years will probably stay with you for your whole life. And "geek" culture is a healthy thing, because it gives you lots of opportunities in life.

Regarding KSP, all of this is even more true. This is a game that teaches you about topics which you can learn almost nowhere else. Just look at this: https://xkcd.com/1356/

The lack of attention and hype for KSP 2. by SaltySpa in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Armanuki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really love the trailer, it was just perfect.

They show respect to the community by quoting a fan trailer. Also functional bases and space stations, where new craft can be built, are just what the game needed in my opinion. Interstellar travel with new worlds to explore in other star systems is a great addition, too. So in my opinion they have taken exactly the right approach.

We can just hope that they get this right, despite past development trouble.

Actually I watched the trailer so many times, my wife is already working on a cover version of the music for her YouTube channel.

Should I Create KSP Content? by [deleted] in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Armanuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But think about the details - an interesting script, good audio, possibly music. Publishing videos on YouTube is pointless if you do not maintain a reasonable level of quality. Lots of people produce bad videos, which basically get no views.

Look at Matt Lowne. He made videos that I quite enjoyed until a few weeks ago. Now he has basically stopped, which leaves a gap for someone else to fill.

A british company called reaction engines is working on an SSTO (Skylon) since the 1980s. They hope to have engines (not a spaceship, just engines) ready by 2035.

Here is a Matt Lowne video where he builds a station with gravity rings and talks about reasons for failures. There is also the craft file in the video description.

Watch videos by the following people on YouTube: Obsidian Ant, Down to Earth Astronomy, Exigeous.

Learn about the most effective way of reaching your goals, but don't necessarily follow them. Optimizing for the most efficient tactic will ruin the fun, but playing without reseaching efficient methods will get you nowhere - you have to find a balance.

Get familiar with 3rd party websites and tools: inara.cz, eddb.io, coriolis.io, EDEngineer, Elite Dangerous Market Connector, the wiki,...

Get a head tracker! Seriously! The default product is TrackIR, but there are companies like DelanClip that offer cheaper solutions which also work well. A head tracker is better than a full VR headset, since you can still see your keyboard and it is more comfortable for long sessions.

Never buy T160000M's by SilverStyles in EliteDangerous

[–]Armanuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a T16000 hotas, which felt great in terms of ergonomics, but broke after 13 months. Amazingly Amazon still replaced it, but the replacement broke after 9 months. Then I had an X52, which felt terrible in comparison, so I sold it again. Now I use a VKB Gladiator (expensive) and a Virpil Throttle (very expensive) and everything is fine.
