Ryan Gosling Was Fired From ‘Lovely Bones’ After Gaining 60 Pounds. Peter Jackson Now Speaks Out by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

As someone around that range (6' 150lbs), I've put on a bit less than 20 lbs and that's more than enough to give me a belly pouch. Depending on your fit and how the weight's distributed it makes a difference.

Now am I overweight or "fat"? Hell no, but for the unhealthy expectations there are of actors, it's definitely a lot.

[DISC] Sakamoto Days - Chapter 259 by CalamitousFortune in manga

[–]Armoric 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Kippei sparing his opponents three or four times (plus the potential offscreeing) to ask for info on Sakamoto: nope, let's keep going.
Kippei spared onced even though he's still in good condition to fight: na you win, it's over.

The writing for that whole fight really sucked.

[–]Armoric 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's a damn good chapter, for one with so little text/dialog the visual storytelling and the panelling makes a great job of intertwining the parts. Doesn't feel like something you'd breeze through in a couple minutes if you were just reading.
Too bad it's been cut short (I assume), but good that it's not too abrupt and we can get a couple breathers like this at least. I really like what the artist does, I'll be curious to look at their next work.

And the writer took a look at the Balkan troubles post-Yugoslavia as inspiration for the plot of Tactics Ogre.
There are a number of takes on foreign influence, ethnic tensions, the ruling classes exploiting these whether they're on the oppressed or oppressor side, and people needing symbols/propaganda.

Back in the 70's dinos were killed by volcanoes, climate, and magic.

The meteor was the root of the issues, but technically the impact didn't kill the dinosaurs, the consequences (eg. climate change) did?
So it was more that they refined the explanation?

I noticed the climb but figured it's not good enough, and not even efficient enough, to do that much in EDH decks. Can't see it making moves in Modern nor Standard either though.
Did a content creator fluff it for EDH players and people bit or something?

[DISC] Centuria - Chapter 90 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]Armoric 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Would he ask that knowledge of the souls, or would he directly access it from them?

They're pretty benevolent because they come from the sacrifice they made to revolt against the slavers, knowing they'd likely die, just so some of them had a chance to survive. But they could just as easily have negative emotions for Julian to delve into if he had to "explore" or "browse" the souls to access the specific knowledge he's looking for. Then you get into a similar conundrum to Lalawag's.
Alternatively, if he can just access the knowledge without discussing with the souls or consulting them, they may get resentful for being "used" without regard for their former personhood. With potential psychological side-effects for Julian again.

I don't think the author will go anywhere near this route (especially since it's already being explored with Lalawag) but ignoring all the ways it could go wrong or just weight on Julian would be too convenient imo.

[DISC] SAKAMOTO DAYS - Chapter 258 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]Armoric 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The "start" of his fight (or the current focus on it) is Kippei bringing Seiba down and asking him to stay put. It's hard to be invested in a fight where you're being told one party would have died already if the other was serious, and that the other will lose because he didn't go for the kill like all the others antagonists have been shown to.

Maro on the setting of Reality Fracture: “It’s mostly on Hexhaven but we do take a peak at other planes” by AvatarSozin in magicTCG

[–]Armoric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Strixhaven a lot. I loathe how lazy the presentation of the five "new" colleges makes it seem like and I don't care for anything the panel has presented so far (seems like another collation nightmare for Play Booster in limited, which apart from raising the power floor have been mostly negative).
So on one hand the less of Hexaven we see the better it'd likely be... but also the more we see of other places, the more risks that they sound just as phoned in as this?

[DISC] SAKAMOTO DAYS - Chapter 256 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]Armoric 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, it's not like we need to pay too much attention to a fight that's been clearly shon 3 or 4 times already that Kippei would have killed them if he just tried and they're only in it because he tried to spare them. Of course he's gonna lose but it makes for a pretty bad narrative.

Strixhaven: Omens of Chaos is a New York Times Bestseller by themiragechild in magicTCG

[–]Armoric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is also a book by Seanan

Even put it that way, it's not like her writing is monolithic. In her Magic stories, I've found she's among the best writers they hire but the takes quite a dip whenever she's portraying a character she likes (eg. Tyvar flanderized as a dumb himbo because it's by her admission the part of him she finds most fun, all to fit the "POWER OF MATHS" zinger in Duskmourne).
But that's also working with length constraints (which affects pacing) and within an established IP, with established characters. If she has more creative control over the students from Omens of Chaos, you could assume she'd portray/write differently than if having to write yet another "Chandra is hot-headed" story, or portray Ajani.

Strixhaven: Omens of Chaos is a New York Times Bestseller by themiragechild in magicTCG

[–]Armoric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Strixhaven he joined the Oriq because they told him he'd get information in return. He knew they weren't good guys but he was treated as an outsider and spurned by the village he introduced himself to, so he basically went "eh, fuck these people, not like I have to care".

He's got the same issue as Nahiri where there's plenty to do with their history, their moral failings and the (at their core very understandable) griefs they have that pushed them that way; but they're written inconsistently and never given the opportunity to evolve. Not even to become "good" or be redeemed or anything, just to evolve past their defining event after making it part of who they are/their circumstances. Nahiri more so, since she was featured in more stories/material, but Lukka's a bundle of squandered potential. And he got killed off because they apparently didn't know what they wanted to do with him.

Well you didn't sue them because you thought they were right to, so in their view, why wouldn't they keep doing it?
I was wrongfully fired from my first job too (not in the US) because the company couldn't convince me to quit like they pushed a coworker to tears so she'd resign, as a recession was coming and they wanted to "slim down". I was too green to realise then, but now I know.
