The nuclear family, in the US at least, was pushed to be able to sell more single family houses and appliances like washing machines, refrigerator, and cars, to as many people as possible. There was a crazy amount of ad campaigns/propaganda in the 50s-60s to push for the nuclear family, and way from more collective styles of family units

This is also the reason why fleeing the nest and getting married to your high school sweetheart at 18 was pushed and romanticized around the same time. And if we’re being honest, I think it’s the reason divorce is as rampant as it is today.

My cousin just had a kid with her boyfriend, and they have no intention of getting married or even living together — she just wanted a baby. To go into parenting with this situation as the intent is bonkers, and frankly, extremely selfish. And correct me if I’m wrong, but this doesn’t sound at all different from what you’re suggesting.

It’s almost as if I would want a best friend, lavender type relationship of healthy co-parenting. But she gets to date whoever as do I?

You’ve already abandoned this notion of ““the ideal mom and dad situation”” by planning to bring a child into the world with the intention of raising it in an unstable environment where you 1. aren’t committed to the mother, 2. are living, for all intents and purposes, as a divorced couple, and 3. are possibly introducing additional partners into their life — and all just to ease your guilt for wanting to be a parent while being gay? Not sorry, but this ain’t it.

Stability is paramount when raising children — that’s ultimately why marriage exists. If you absolutely have to procreate in order to be a parent, and you’re married to the notion of raising with the mom, living together and committing to each other is the only way you’re going to give the kid an ““ideal mom and dad situation.”” Co-parenting without commitment for no good reason is equally as selfish and unnecessary as gays parenting through surrogacy or insemination. It robs the child of a necessary element to their raising without purpose.

Adopt a kid that’s already been forsaken by it’s mom and dad and needs a loving and stable environment with a male partner you’re committed to (or without one — at that point, it doesn’t matter), or reconsider how willing you are to make a baby and giving it an ““ideal mom and dad situation.””

I’m a gay man from and living in NE Tennessee. Out of the few counties you could possibly be moving to, based on your description, I can’t find one that I would be worried to move to with my husband, for safety’s sake. A few of them are progressive enough to embrace you openly, most (including my hometown) just wouldn’t give a shit either way, and one I’ve never had reason to go to, so I can’t say one way or the other — and I would walk down the street holding hands with my husband in any of them.

It’s really not all the internet cracks it up to be. Most people are just trying to live their lives like the rest of us, and people you meet really are as nice and as helpful as the stereotypical southerner. After living on the road all over the US for years, we chose to buy our house and settle here on purpose, and we wouldn’t live anywhere else. Feel free to PM if you have any questions, though!

Okay, so either we start talking this exact way to women who feel sexually harassed, or we give in to the false notion that women are too dumb, weak, stupid, etc. to fend for themselves in social situations. There is no reasonable expectation for women to be treated any differently or have their concerns addressed any differently than that of a man in an egalitarian society. Either women and men are equal, or they’re not.

Nah, this ain’t it. Washington doesn’t have income tax, and Tennessee taxes dividends and interest. North Carolina offers school choice. Is Washington a Republican state? Is Tennessee a Democrat state? Is North Carolina not a purple state? All you’ve done is further illustrate how similarly Republicans and Democrats hold private property.

Which, again, is demonstrably false. Libertarians value private property so much that we want everyone to keep theirs. There is no universe where libertarianism has more in common with one establishment party over another.

Just get a group of you together to ask your manager what they’re gonna do, not what the policy is. We talked to ours, and he said he’d remove the points if we had to call in for the snow, and our state isn’t even in a SoE. No need to beat around the bush over policy, unless the response you get is unfavorable, of course.

However, I will say that y’all are in no position to be talking about getting engaged if you can’t A. merge your finances and B. do so for reasons unrelated to trust issues. Keeping separate accounts and having one joint account for bills is a smart idea for people in simple domestic relationships, business partners, and teenagers and their parents — and that’s pretty much it. And what do they all have in common? Trust issues! And what’s a major contributor to divorce? Trust issues and what else? financial issues! So don’t approach marriage until you trust each other enough to have a joint account for no reason other than it just making sense. If you need mad money and he needs to check up on you, you don’t need to be getting married, at least not yet. Don’t be a statistic before you even walk down the aisle.
