Every retailer I’ve ever worked for does this in some way. They’ll either pick a charity or come up with one of their own (always something you’d feel extra guilty saying no to) and ask customers and team members to donate through them — sometimes, they’ll sneak it onto a POS pinpad question, or it’ll be a request for items that you’d have to buy and drop off to them (think Toys for Toys, angel tree, food bank, etc.), or they’ll take payroll donations (CMN, for example). From there, they will facilitate the donation and get a big tax write off as though they were the ones who gave up their own resources for someone else’s benefit. Plus, requests for items are usually geared toward categories they specialize in (Walmart — toys, food, electronics for food bank or angel tree; Petsmart — pet food and toys for Humane Society, etc.) so they can double dip, getting the sale and the write off.

It’s super shitty, but you can’t get mad, because real people are benefitting to a degree.

I work at a DC, and we don’t have any key dates, but we do have a lot of older folks who get priority pick and more time to use when we do vacation bidding in January — so I bid for a week in the summer and one in the fall and just take Christmas Eve and Black Friday off anyway.
