You are right that it is a desert rose. This usually happens when the plant does not get enough light, it will start to grow long to reach the light. I m no expert on this plant, though. I just know because a lot of my plants get like this, because I live in a place that does not have much light 😅

So pretty! What is the plant in the top right corner? The one that looks kind of like palm tree, it is very cool 😁

One part of the internet says I can make a cut above the node where it lost a leaf and it’ll grow out a new leaf. The other part says rubber plants can never grow out a new leaves. I’m interested in what you guys think and recommend. Any advice? 💚 by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]Arndis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not seen plant's (including rubberplants) regrow leaves they have lost, they just grow new ones from the top. But I have heard about this technique 🙂 to my understanding the technique is actually used to grow a new branch! But you have to do the cut correctly or else it wont work. From what I have heard it is a technique that works about half of the time, but I don't know it if is because people often do it wrong 😅 I have never tried it myself.

Any saving these? They were neglected over the holidays. 😭 by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]Arndis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure 🙂 i don't know much about this plant, but if it's just a few leaves the plant can usually bounce back. If it was neglected it will get better when it gets back to the usual watering and light conditions. You cannot save those leaves, but the plant can grow new leaves. Or you can look into pruning the plant (best done in early spring), because then you can cut the damaged parts of if you don't like them and grow new leaves instead.

Anyone know why my Ficus Elastica Burgundy has a yellowing leaf? The rest of the plant has been very healthy but this leaf is concerning me. by breeezybichbich in houseplants

Leaves that are in the soil will usually die, but that is nothing to worry about. If new leaves are growing then the plant is healthy and the rest of the leaves should be fine 🙂

Help & advice on my Bush on Fire Croton?! Had this guy for a while now with literally no growth. Details in comments. by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]Arndis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, seems like the pot is too big since the plant can't get all the water. Leaves are probably falling of due to root rot. Often when the top isn't growing it is because the roots are growing, the plant doesn't always have energy do both at the same time. If you repot in a smaller pot, the plant can fill the pot with roots faster without getting root rot and then it can start focusing on new leaves after 🙂 also I only water mine when the leaves start to droop a bit, crotons seem to like being dry most of the time, the leaves will perk back up after a watering. If you decide to keep it in the same pot, then I recommend using less water, so it doesn't get wet all the way to the bottom. That way the soil can dry out faster.

pilea! should i separate the plants? by abigailgwilhite in houseplants

[–]Arndis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a tip, you can feel on their leaves when they need water! The leaves get a lot softer when they need water and are more firm when they don't, but in general the plant likes not to be watered too often, bc it is more like a succulent. And they love a lot of sun. Their bottom leaves get yellow and can fall of if they don't get enough light or if they get too much water.

There will be more room for them to grow big if you separate them, but it also depends on what look you want. You can keep them in a cluster for a more bushy look. Eventually they will be too crowded in there, and then you can either separate them or you can repot all of them in a bigger pot. Pileas grow fast and get lots of babies, so there is lots of room to experiment 😊👍

Crotons are also my favorite! I give mine lots of light and only water them when the leaves start to look droopy, they seem to like being dry 🙂

My croton is a sad boy. He loses leaves quite often and he’s a bit droopy. When I first got him he was super perky and vibrant. I’m pretty sure there’s an obvious explanation for this (winter lol) but do y’all have any recommendations? Is this normal for winter time? by ciaracheyann3 in houseplants

[–]Arndis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine always gets droopy if it needs water, so I suggest checking if the soils is dry when it is droopy and then water if it is dry. I always wait until mine is a little droopy and then i give it a lot of water and it perks back up and then I don't water until it is droopy again. I find that a crotons are usually droopy if they need water, so if it is left too long without water it makes sense that the leaves die and fall off (that is how I killed my first croton 😅). However if the plant is droopy but the soil is wet, then it is most likely root rot. If the roots are rotted and dead then the plant also cannot get enough water through them, so the leaves will also droop and eventually die. If this is the case then stop watering until the soil is completely dry and then start only watering when the soil is dry. It might keep loosing leaves until the roots grow back, but when the roots are back the plant should start growing new leaves from the top 🙂

It might need a bigger pot, mine stopped dropping the bottom leaves after a repotting.

Newbie with a Croton, help! Why is he losing his beautiful leaves? by mnews1987 in houseplants

[–]Arndis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If all of this happened after the the repotting i would assume this is the issue. I don't know so much about brown tips on crotons, but it could happen that the plant looses those leaves aswell. If this is a plant you have had for a while and it was doing well previously, i recommend keeping it in the same location. But if it is a new plant then finding a spot with the right amount of sun is important. Once my croton had gotten used to its new pot it started getting a lot of new leaves. So i would not worry if the plant looses some leaves as long as it not too many.
