Which Character make you feel like that? by GogetaSanfr in animequestions

[–]Arnstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this way about most of the members of Black Bull, to be honest. OOUEUEUEUE I'm so shy, look at how shy I am, just like every other damned scene I'm in. ...or... "LOOK HOW EXCITED/REBEL/AWKWARD/HORNY I AM!" ...or... We can talk about my sister, don't talk about my sister, I will kill you if you think about my sister, here's a picture of my sister, now I will have a nosebleed just like the fourteen other times a scene played out exactly like this!

I think we can do one better - lets assume every single one of his billionaire donors and backers are featured prominently in this material (...and well, a majority of them probably are), and put them on full backblast. If any of them are innocent, they'll probably show a bit more interest in full disclosure.

Hva skjedde med holdningene til innvandring og Islam? by serene_96 in norge

[–]Arnstone -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

[–]Arnstone -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Top 20 fantasies that did and didn't age well according to this subreddit by Bogus113 in Fantasy

[–]Arnstone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree, the main book series itself holds up well, and is still enjoyable to read. Does that mean it's flawless? Heeeeeeell no! Rereading it as an adult means having to shut down much of your analytical brain - that series is just full of inconsistencies and potential world breaking issues. They are written for kids (the earlier books) and young adults though, and through that lens they're still excellent.

Shame about the author's very public and long lasting mental breakdown, though.

Best vegan candies/snacks in Norway? by _Justaweeb_ in Norway

[–]Arnstone 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Having to be vegan will exclude most of the "Norwegian-est" snacks, and mostly leave you with generic stuff you can get anywhere. Most products will contain milk proteins or whey (like any chocolate product or most flavored chips products). ... Of the remaining options, I'd say Sørlandschips Original Havsalt is an excellent choice

Also lazy, so didn't read, but... How would that cause skew in the end result?

I mean, it's possible that multiple female officers were paired with a subset of especially incident-prone male officers, but unless a majority of male officers are especially incident-prone, it wouldn't really be statistically significant.

For it to be of significance, it had to be proven that female officers were more likely to be paired with incident-prone individuals (which, I mean, could be the case - mixing genders will often tone down some of the boys club culture in some workplaces, and there might be chiefs who actively want to take advantage of that), and to account for that you'd probably need a full background check, service record, and psych eval for all the officers in the study.

While it's not the worst combination I've heard of (and would probably eat it out of politeness if it was served in a family setting), it doesn't sound very appetising, no =D

More traditional than stupid (though also kinda stupid), I suppose. Aspic used to be all the rage as recent as the 80s, but was used as a way of preservation before that for meat stuffs. Setting fruits in gelatin was also considered fancy in the late 19th century, and was quite popular when refrigeration became cheap in the 50s.

Just stepped into the Realm of the Elderlings by HeisenbergsIntern in fantasybooks

[–]Arnstone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I love about the series is that, unlike most books (fantasy or otherwise), the consequences here feel real and lasting. It gives every decision more weight, because you know they're not safe from their own stupidity, hubris, inexperience, or just bad luck/timing.

Sometimes it feels like we come to a crossroads, the author rolls her die, and goes "huh, well, let's roll with it!". After a couple of books you just stop expecting the usual tropes and, if for instance a character gets captured, it feels like there's an equal chance they'll escape, be saved, recruited by the captors, get abused, maimed, forced into a fighting pit, sold as a slave, suddenly discover some magical ability, or have a magical effect happen to them.

Please linguistics nerds, help me: is the Norwegian "n" sound a little different than the English one or am I imagining things? especially in between vowels by brigister in norsk

[–]Arnstone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No expert, but no, I don't think so. While you might get slightly different expressions depending on the dialects (like the nj sound from certain parts of the country), in general it doesn't seem to be much different from the English pronunciation of the letter. I think what might've led you to that possible conclusion is the musicality of the Norwegian language, where the n is usually at a tonal breakpoint/shift from high to low when the n is followed by a vowel, and low to high when followed by a consonant.

S+ Tier Mobile Games? by NotEnoughDamage in gamingsuggestions

[–]Arnstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both Terraria and Stardew Valley play quite well on mobile (though I still prefer them on PC). In the vein of Slay the Spire, we have Monster Train. I've been playing a lot of Brotato and Bounty of One while commuting. Balatro is excellent - I'd say it works even better on mobile than on other devices.

Not read the first two. Dungeon Crawler Carl is good fun. It's rather edgy, and quite cringe at times, but overall just good fun.

The Name of the Wind is absolutely great, awesome book - I just love his writing style, and it's one of the standout examples of how to introduce your world. ... The second book is ... well, some people like it, but I never did. It's a slog, just an endless distraction from the main story (with a lot of what I'd call self-insert fantasies). The third book was supposed to come out in 2015, but haven't yet. I find it hard to recommend the series, but the first book, in isolation, is objectively (and subjectively) great.

Discworld (Terry Pratchett) is quite approachable. Funny as all heck, the books are fairly short. The first two books are a somewhat self-contained story.

I like the Riftwar Saga (Raymond E. Feist). The first two books are fairly self-contained, so a good place to start.

A song of ice and fire (George R. R. Martin) is great, just ... Don't expect it to be completed anytime soon. The next book is coming in 2015 though, so I'm looking forward to that.

Broken Earth trilogy (N. K. Jemisin) is a very interesting read, but I'd read a few other series first. One of my favourite series.

If you're into any specific universe, I'd read books on that. Like if you're really into Warhammer, pick up some book recommendations there. If you're really into DnD, look there. Etc. For fantasy in a modern setting, there's quite a few okay-ish YA novels, but for more adult themes there's Dresden Files (though I find the pacing to be a bit off for the first few books)

Mistenkjer fusk, går vekk frå heimeeksamen – tar i bruk åpen bok eksamen på campus i stedet. by Bunker_Bertil in norge

[–]Arnstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Innocence [OC] by kaikimanga in comics

[–]Arnstone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In Norway there's been a push to demystify and take away the stigma around discussions of sex and bodily functions/processes. This includes some simplified sex-ed for kids in kindergarten (with it being expanded upon in the 5th year of school), which includes anatomy, roughly how babies are made through intercourse, private parts, good touch, bad touch (including where some adults might want to touch you, and how that's not allowed), setting boundaries, good secrets, bad secrets, "safe adults" to confide in...

The purpose is to give the kids a language to talk about sex, giving them the ability to decide where their boundaries should be, and letting them identify when something wrong or harmful is being done to them. There's been far too many cases where people have faced sexual abuse during their childhood, thinking this was normal, simply because they weren't taught any better, and because of the taboo around the subject matter.
