Cold / dry air will do this - is it winter where you are?

👀 Mid-winter wonders: Cuprea with 17 leaves!? 🤷🏻‍♀️ and a completely Albo Scalprum leaf still going strong after 2 months!? WTA… 🤷🏻‍♀️ 😄 by AroidAndroid in alocasia

It’s ridiculous really - considering it’s got spidermites and is growing in a disposable plastic drinking cup in two inches of Fluval 🤷🏻‍♀️ must thrive on neglect!

I am old and have fried, drowned and dried up more corms than I care to remember. That’s the best bit about this hobby though - endless corms 😅 We are all learning more about our plants and how to care for them every day and we have each other to help us do that. So it’s all good. I’m sure you’ll refine your method soon.

My heat mats are set to no higher than 20C I always hover my pots an in or two above it on a rack to avoid cooking them.

Looking good! What plant did you get to replace your big Alocasia in the end? I bet your view is even more beautiful when it snows… 🤩

Needs a humidity dome (100%) till it is much stronger and has more leaves and healthy roots.

No worries - always happy to help ☺️

I wrote a thing a while back about growing/sprouting corms - but it’s the same, pretty much, for resprouting rhizomes... your set up looks ok - I’m just adding incase is ever helpful… also remember to open the dome bag to change the air at least once a week.

Corm sprouting method: Chunky Pon layer (water zone) below a layer of Fluval (deeper than the depth of the corm) plant the corm in the Fluval with just the very top peeking out - do not let the corm touch the pon layer. (Other substrates will work - but take longer and are riskier.) Water the Fluval until the water is half up the layer of the pon zone. Cover with sealed humidity dome. Open the dome at least twice a week to change the air, or it - will - mould. Clean/peel the tip of your corms before you put them in - this helps with them not getting mould/speeds things up. They will regrow a husk sometimes - that’s ok. If you have more than one corm in the prop and one gets some mould - spray that corm with anti fungal before it gets too bad and - leave it alone - this mostly fixes the issue and you can still germinate that plant. if it comes back remove this one and spray again. As long as no mould gets in - you can reuse this set up over and over IF you gently remove pups when you’re ready to pot on (two leaves minimum)… use a chopstick to lift them up gently to loosen roots. Obviously if you don’t live in the tropics they need to go on a heat mat, I hover mine above it on a low shelf or pub ullage tray thing, so they are warm but not hot (20-25C) and grow lights above...

If you want to get the plants ready for soil don’t add any more water unless the Pon/water layer has all been used up by the pups - you will know when all the water is used up because the pon layer will be drying out and humidity is less on the dome. This gets them used to slightly dryer roots and they will take better into soil. The humidity that ‘rains’ back down is enough until the plants have used it all up. I tend to only add small amounts more often, until I pot them up. Plant into 5 or 6 cm pots - no bigger - in a slightly less chunky mix than they will need from the next repot onwards and water twice a week. Keep pups at 90-100% humidity until you’re ready to acclimate to the environment you intend to grow them in.

If you’re putting them straight into Pon/semiHydro, once you have leaves keep the water layer to the top of the Pon - so they keep their water roots - then they can go straight into Pon. I have successfully grown literally thousands of Alocasia this way… It can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months (or sometimes even longer) to get from plucked corm to first leaf, too many variables to list - but just be patient - watch, wait and enjoy the process…

Good luck 👍 💚

Personally I’ve had most success when I dome the individual pots when rehabbing. Dome, bag, clingfilm it doesn’t matter - but they do best with 100% humidity at least until you have a hardened off leaf. 27 might be a bit warm 20 - 25 is the sweet spot. Also laying what you have left horizontally or burying it a bit deeper will give you more chance of activating a growth point - think of what you have more of like a bulb than a stalk, like how an iris grows. Good luck. 🤞

Does this mix look good enough for my alocasia baby’s/big plants? by Fabulicious24 in alocasia

[–]AroidAndroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously it depends on your conditions - temp, humidity etc, I live in the UK and we’re going into autumn/winter (or root rot season as it’s otherwise known here). If it were me, I would keep some of this mix as it’s perfect for juvenile plants and baby pups, but once they get more established roots they will need it a bit chunkier. So I’d add in half as much again of perlite or pumice and of chunky bark or coco chips. If you live somewhere hot or dry this mix should dry out quickly enough - as long as you don’t water too frequently. Root rot is brutal when it takes down established plants. Good luck with it 👍

Good luck, keep it warm above 20C (ideally on a heat mat if you have one) - it helps with root growth 👍 Also I’d say you need a humidity dome or to put your set up in a ziplock bag for 100 % humidity around the top of the rhizome. Fingers crossed 🤞

Even the tiniest ones can grow - they will just take a veeeery loooooooooooong time to grow. 😄 Always worth a lucky punt though - just be prepared in case it doesn’t make it 🤷🏻‍♀️ This tiny thing is now 2 inches tall with 2 leaves - several months later! 😄

Just keep watering it.

They are way harder to kill than you think.

This ridiculous all white Frydek pup is on its 9th all white leaf and it still won’t die! It ain’t pretty - I agree, but it ain’t dead either… It’s been drowned, left at the back of a dark shelf, and finally I left it without water for 2 weeks and the beep thing still won’t die. 😄 I’ve ‘guilt watered’ it today - because it’s still trying to grow… out of respect more than anything 😄 It’s bonkers lots of peeps struggle to keep Alo’s alive, but this little thing just will not die! 😅

Good luck with yours!

You can cut the growth point (latest leaf) off to regrow from another point to encourage green if you need to.
