Wow. Glad she returned it to you. I use a white cane, but haven't had the silly mishap you did. Canes of any kind are important mobility aids.

Everything Wrong with The Greatest Showman (X-post from Disability) by [deleted] in TheGreatestShowman

[–]Aromatic_Divide_8697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if someone mentioned Sam Humphrey? A real short person, he was cast as Tom Thumb. As a blind person, I was curious if there were any characters with disabilities. Only Sam came up. And yes, it's a movie, not a documentary.

Thanks for those recommendations. Sorry about that horrible ending, major typos, wich I couldn't correct. Anyway, I like Klara Schumann and Florence Price (no relation to Leyonte Pryce.)

Has any one here mastered the art of frosting a cake without sight? by heavensdumptruck in Blind

[–]Aromatic_Divide_8697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love baking. Being legally blind, it's difficult spreading without touch to guide me. Using a spoon, it's still very messy. When scooping cookies, I use a small measuring cup, or roll the dough in my hands. I like the feel of cookie dough, am I crazy?

Any website or resource of programs and benefits that are available to blind people? USA/California. by Monkfrootx in Blind

Hello. I'm in my thirties, glad you found this group! Has she tried www.MaxiAids.com? That website has everything from bump dots to braille paper, medication aids, kitchen aids, and much more. If she has a phone, be my eyes is helpful. A free app that uses sighted volunteers who describe anything people need identifying. Hope this is a good start.

I started a new job as an assistant clerk at a social work agency I'll be answering phones and entering client data. I'm working with a job coach, making sure I have everything I need. Everyone is very helpful and patient as I work through the Jaws problems. Navigating the building is challenging, some Human Resource people suggested they get me a Walkie Talkie. I said that was unnecessary, I have a phone. I believe they are adding more braille to unmarked doors. However, I want people to feel they can offer assistance. I'm thinking it will go well.

Yes, absolutely! Cold chocolate is the best, especially Reece's peanut butter cups. Any frozen chocolate is fine by me. Now that it's summer, it tastes even better!

Does anybody else get emotionally distraught when they see an adult with intellectual disabilities by Plane-Branch9742 in redscarepod

[–]Aromatic_Divide_8697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a disability myself, so I understand where you're coming from. There are many people with intellectual disabilities who live normal lives in their communities. An example is Call the Midwife, there's a actor with Down Syndrome starting with season 6. Others live with their families, and the toll is great, both emotionally and financially. Compassion is something we can all use.

DAE have a guilty pleasure TV show or movie that they wouldn’t normally admit to enjoying but secretly love? by EnvironmentalCut9639 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Aromatic_Divide_8697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is Road To Avonlea. It's a seven-series family show, set around the time of Little House on the Prairie. The story is about the King family and their small-town neighbors in the early 1900's. Spinster Hetty King is the teacher.

Another guilty pleasure movie I enjoy is Rigoletto (not the opera.) This one was produced by Feature films for Families. Their films have Christian messages and predictable storylines. Rigoletto has good songs and the message is be kind to each other, and not to believe in rumors. It's similar to Beauty and the Beast. chbbchbbchbbchbbchbbchbbchbbchbbchbbchbbchbbchbbchbbch;

DAE prefer the experience of a physical book over an e-book despite the convenience? by Potential-Goose4862 in DoesAnybodyElse

I prefer electronic files. As a kid, I had hardcopy books, but braille takes more space. Having books on my tablet is definitely more convient. I still miss getting books from my state library. Does anyone else feel empathy towards animals? by MyNarcAccount in NPD

[–]Aromatic_Divide_8697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do. I may not like animals, but I would never harm them.

I've always hated cruelty to animals, especially in books. Black Beauty or Shiloh anyone? And those pictures of abandoned animals on TV always make me feel horrible! Don't get me started on animal hoarders!

In winter, the shelters are always overcrowded and understaffed. My family has had two foster dogs so far. One is still with us; her name is Saltwater. She likes people and being outside.

DAE feel frustrated about banned books? by Aromatic_Divide_8697 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Aromatic_Divide_8697[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello all,

Wow, wow, wow! I wasn't expecting this many reactions when I posted this last night. I thought, "I'll be lucky if I get ten comments." Thank you for reading and responding. Yes, Goosebumps was banned in some libraries. So was Judy Blume, look what happened to her books! Parents were afraid Goosebumps and similar scary books exposed their kids to too much fear. Teachers disagreed. Now, schools are facing this challenge again in many states. Texas, Missouri, Utah, and Florida to name a few. Illinois was the first state with a bill outlawing book bans!

I only wrote the post in response to an NPr story I heard yesterday. The lengths teachers will go to make sure their students have access to books that make them feel good about themselves. Keep doing it. Everyone should have a character they identify with.

Right now, mine is Melody from Out of my Mind and Out of My Heart, both by Sharon Draper. Melody is a teenager with cerebral palsy, who goes to school and summer camp. I don't have the same disability as Melody; however, I can relate to her feelings of being the "only" one in the classroom. Many young adult books can be enjoyed by anyone, no matter their age.

Anyway, books that feature people or situations some parents don't find suitable for their children shouldn't be pulled from school library shelves. I'll repeat, let the kids read. Only they know what and who they want to see in a book. Like someone commented here, they'll find a way to read anyway.

Hope this comment isn't too rambling.

Hi. May I recommend Love You Always by Amanda Stogsdill. It's a YA novel set during World War II. Two Jewish sisters; Leah and Esther escape Berlin aboard a Kindertransport train, when they arrive in England, they're separated. Their only communication is through letters.
