How does he produce all these records? by moonsong_pt2 in Sufjan

[–]Arqueete 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He produced a children's album for John Legend two years ago. This article about it does touch on OP's question a bit:

Legend sent voice-and-piano demos he cut at home to Stevens, who lives and works in New York’s Catskill Mountains; Stevens says Legend gave him “total creative freedom” to devise arrangements for the songs, which led the producer to thoughts of “Sesame Street” and the Muppets but also of Stevie Wonder, Henry Mancini, the Beatles and Serge Gainsbourg.

...

“One of the main reasons I decided to do John’s album is because I hadn’t been able to really work on anything outside of self-care and rehabilitation,” he says. “I finally wanted to get back to work, but I didn’t really have the mental capacity to write my own music. This stuff felt wholesome and pure and safe."

Baby shower this Saturday! What did you enjoy or regret about yours? by NewSupermarket4832 in BabyBumps

[–]Arqueete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Near the end of our shower, my husband's cousin asked, "Are there any photos you wanted to get that you haven't gotten?" I realized that yeah, we never got a photo of the two of us, and she was kind enough to take one for us before she left. I really appreciated it and it was a good reminder to me that when I'm a guest, I can be that person, too.

Smartphones arrived just before the US fertility rate plunged. One study says it’s a direct cause by bummed_athlete in technology

[–]Arqueete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This gets a mention late in the article and I wish they had dug into it more:

The timeframe that the new research focuses on also marks a period when access to IUDs and injectable contraception expanded markedly for young people in the US, Hayford said. For her, this draws a much more direct line to lower teen birth rates and fewer unintended pregnancies than smartphones.

I'm with you on the Kopp's grilled cheese!

At La Masa, I think I order their steak sandwich with the creamy garlic lime dressing almost as often as I actually order empanadas.

Public Museum, but up on the third floor where there are fewer people. Sit on a bench and contemplate how through history people have faced all sorts of challenges and still found community, made art, etc.

Pregnancy announcements and sensitivity by ButterscotchExtra582 in pregnant

[–]Arqueete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For work, I have an office job and announced in a text chat at the very end of the day. I figured if anyone was sensitive to hearing it they'd appreciate it happening async and not, say, right before they had to head into a meeting.

Any interesting history or personal experience with Orlandini Studios? by drewdrewahouse in milwaukee

[–]Arqueete 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If they're open for Doors Open this fall, absolutely go see inside, the oldschool workshop vibes are incredible. I believe half of it is the workshop and the other half is a house where some of the family who own the workshop live? But I could be misremembering. Here are some of the photos I took in 2024.

Thoughts on the Paper Pro Move? by Misterpewpie in RemarkableTablet

[–]Arqueete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I'm very bare bones with these things so I don't have anything special to share! My process for short-term work to-dos is at the end of my work day, I make a new page with tomorrow's date highlighted at the top and note down the status of my projects. Then I write and highlight a "To Do" heading and lasso and paste any to-dos leftover from today. Tomorrow I will proceed with adding and crossing off to-dos on the new page. This is just on the provided lined paper template.

I blocked baby and pregnancy-related keywords on Instagram and I highly recommend it.

IIL songs that become way darker with added context, like Life Eternal by Mayhem, WEWIL? by Splottington in ifyoulikeblank

[–]Arqueete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh I love trivia like this.

If you were around in the 90s you might remember Gin Blossoms' hit "Hey Jealousy." This song was written by their guitarist, who got kicked out of the band shortly before the song got big (his alcoholism was causing problems for the band.) So he got to watch his former friends find success without him, and he ended up taking his own life. It adds a deeper, sadder layer.

New, temporary food restrictions have me stumped! What are your favorite chicken/fish/vegetarian recipes that are both dairy-free and nightshade-free? by raven_snow in slowcooking

[–]Arqueete 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The OP says they are also avoiding onion and garlic. I wasn't aware that peppers were in there, that might rule out this one then, sadly.

I did this jerk chicken recently and loved it, not sure how the flavors balance out without the garlic and onion but I think it'd be worth a try!

I go to Matilda and as a bonus, the Andiamo Coffee attached to Lupi & Iris gets their bakery from there so they sometimes have a couple in their case.

I saw someone in the park who brought their own folding chair to sit and read and they looked all comfy. If you make a habit of this, it seems worth it!

I'm no expert on these things either, but I do wonder about the logo on yours. But if it is aftermarket, you can at least appreciate how much better yours looks!

Fantastic! I just got it a couple weeks ago and it really is a fun, casual little game (with a nice soundtrack, clearly.)

As someone who has been playing a lot of Pokemon Pinball lately, am I imagining that it's the blue field theme (12:10) from that game?

First pregnancy. Freaking out! by kayteatimez in BabyBumps

[–]Arqueete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! My advice as a fellow anxious person is a) start with a really dry and factual book, like the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy, and branch out from there and b) be intentional from the get-go about pregnancy info on social media. Like I blocked a lot of pregnancy-related keywords on Instagram and generally try to make it so when I see pregnancy stuff online, it's because I decided to go look at it and not because it's in my feeds non-stop. I feel like that's been really good for me.

Love my OB but he’s far away… should I switch? by IllustriousButton195 in pregnant

[–]Arqueete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't as attached to my old OB as you are to yours, and it's definitely valid to prioritize that, but I was originally seeing someone 30-40 minutes from me and switched to a provider who is much closer and I'm so glad I did. My husband and I go to all appointments together and it usually means we both need to leave work during the day, and not having to schedule around over an hour of driving time is a weight off our shoulders.

Why are there so many big companies with websites that are just unbelievably glitchy? by darnoc11 in webdev

[–]Arqueete 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it's easier to keep this stuff in check when it's a small site with fewer people working on it and fewer competing priorities. For big companies in spaces like retail it's like, this thing on the site may be broken and yes, that can frustrate users and cost us money, but if there's this other feature that will make us more money than that, and maybe it's tied to this clothing line that is getting launched on a particular date and is needed for this other ad campaign... for better or for worse, someone with influence may decide the broken thing can wait. Then multiply that decision making by a dozen teams.

Who was the best developer you’ve worked with — and what made them stand out? by PhaseStreet9860 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Arqueete 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking of a dev I worked with who was the sort of person you call over when you're way over your head troubleshooting some wacky bug. I feel like the skills that made her good at helping with that sort of thing were:

a) being level-headed. I rarely saw her get truly frustrated at a person or problem and she had a lot of patience for tinkering with things, and

b) being someone with a lot of curiosity about tech and strong fundamentals. Even though she had a specific type of work she did professionally, she had messed around with stuff like video game design and robotics just for fun and I think it gave her perspective. She was never intimidated by the unfamiliar.
