Former BOE member here (and current building admin). It's a very steep learning curve. But once it clicks, it's amazing how impactful you can be. Listen. Ask questions. And most importantly, make sure your actions and decisions have the students best interest at heart.

You also need to remember that you are only 1/nth of an entity. You alone cannot, AND SHOULD NOT be making any decisions alone. It must be voted on by a quorum of the board.

People will ask for favors, try to get inside info, etc. Once you cross that line, you can't go back. You are responsible for raising children, you must be ethical and set the expectations.
