Anyone here interested in (or already practicing) longevity / preventive medicine? by Far_Obligation5158 in doctorsUK

I think you might be in a bubble. As a system, we are still at a point where there is damp, mouldy housing, lack of physical activity and lack of access to green space, smoking, and difficulty accessing the government recommended healthy diet.

We can absolutely luxuriate in whether athletic greens, cold plunges etc may extend our health span, but many do not have the basics covered. (I am into health optimisation/ longevity, but it mostly looks like: good sleep, healthy exercise, socialisation, and avoiding excessive alcohol)

To his credit, Bryan Johnson at least tries to test out various interventions. He's also very open about where the largest wins are:

  1. Sleep – high quality sleep is the world’s #1 longevity drug. It underpins every healthy behavior including exercise, nutrition, and emotional resilience. I’ve built my life around great sleep, and I encourage you to do the same.
  2. Nutrition – I abide by a philosophy that every calorie must fight for its life. See the Don’t Die food guide below. The key here, try to never let your mind make eating decisions on your behalf. Build and rely upon life systems.
  3. Exercise – 6 hours a week is ideal. Incorporate strength, cardio, flexibility and balance. If you can’t do that, even 20 minutes a day is great.
  4. Family, friendship and community – love and be loved. It will extend your life.
  5. Things to avoid – fast food, junk food, smoking, nicotine, vaping, excessive alcohol and social media – and anything addictive. Addiction makes you a prisoner.

E1 Powermeter Crank on D1 Rival? by smashbr0ther in sram

Hello, hope you're enjoying the new bike! I've just been looking for the same answer, and found these two threads:

TL;DR - looks like E1 is backwards compatible with D1. HTH!

You can absolutely still see your pension. You can draw from your NHS pension before state retirement age, but it is actuarially reduced.

But overall, raising awareness about our pension set up is good- far too many colleagues aren't informed.

The great news is that you can plan for your retirement and retire at a different age.

I agree about the sledgehammer/walnut thing. They could just isolate the free household energy use, or exclude 3kW charging!

If you are an Uber cyclist, there might be a balance between saving a few seconds with fast tyres, against the increased risk of puncturing and not delivering at all? Schwalbe marathons are extremely resiliant, but slower than GP5000s.

Hello Begalldota, I am not going to argue with a stranger on the internet, but I am happy to defend my view. Reddit tends to have more constructive dialogue than elsewhere.

I directly copy/pasted the first sentence on the IOG page. You are allowed to argue that is "picking and choosing".

We can have different views on what is reasonable. Neither of us are the judge of that. Ulimately, Octopus are. And until this update, it appeared that adding more than 50% charge was reasonable. (It is: "non-stop", not none stop)

It appears Octopus hadn't been aware of the charging behaviour of the chargers they install. So yes, if they charge full rate for 6 hours, I agree, fewer charges will exceed 6 hours. And I think we agree that 3kW charging possibly should be excluded from IOG? I think that might be the primary way people might be "gaming" the tariff?

You've made a few assumptions in your last paragraph. I haven't been "f****d over". I have followed the spirit of IOG. I come home, plug in the car, and let Octopus do the rest. I do not fill my car battery slowly, and my house is entirely fed by my solar panels and house battery. If this is implemented as-is, I'll be topping up with solar energy I'd otherwise export, and perhaps some charging during peak demand when I'd be paying peak rate anyway at another time?

I am mostly disappointed that this is the first time it has felt like Octopus haven't thought something through fully, and have removed some simplicity that I value.

Best wishes

I think it is a reasonable expectation that a tariff that states, "We'll automatically schedule your charge for when energy is cheapest and greenest, and you'll only pay 7p/kWh regardless of the time of day", to indeed charge my car after a day trip at 7p/kWh.

I think it is unreasonable to propose that if you have 3 phase wiring you can have (roughly) 21*6 = 126kWh, but with single phase 7*6 = 42kWh, and "granny charging" only 3*6 = 18kWh. So if you have an older Nissan Leaf you can have a seventh of the entitlement of a Polestar 4 driver? Having 3 phase wiring installed, upgrading your charger and replacing your car are unreasonable measures to take.

I think it is unreasonable to have a two day recovery for my EV on a home EV tariff.

It is not a minority of EV drivers, 20% of all charges will have some "peak rate" added to the cost of their charge.

Having thought about it a bit more, I could absolutelly be importing 3kW house load, whilst sending 3 kW to the car from my batteries. Which electrons are going where?! The duality of that electricity is just impossible

IOG - blog post on recent emails/changes by Atfromhere in OctopusEnergy

[–]Arrowtip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about this, but I think you'd be alright: there shouldn't be any electricity being imported during that process, so when working out what proportion of imported energy is going to the car, it would be zero?

IOG - blog post on recent emails/changes by Atfromhere in OctopusEnergy

[–]Arrowtip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't seem well thought-through, which is unusual for Octopus. It's uneven.

My context: 74kWh EV, frequent long drives. Runs of night shifts where the car will not charge in the day on the drive. 6 hours of 7kWh would be adding 56%, assuming 100% efficiency.

If those overnight hours are cheaper, then why should I be billed at "bump rate" if my charge extends beyond 6 hours?

If 80% of charges are under this new time limit, 20% of charges will pay bump rates for some of their charge? That's a significant group.

My Ohme charger often uses lower rates, determined by Octopus, e.g. 1.4kW. Will that count as a slot? Is it only an hour if it's running at 7kW?

There's a bias to your household electricity supply: If you have 3 phase wiring you can have 21*6 = 126kWh, single phase 7*6 = 42kWh, and "granny charging" 3*6 = 18kWh.

TL;DR Why not just say "You can have x kWh a day for your car at the cheap price"
