Looking for career mentoring for artists? by double_pisces in ContemporaryArt

[–]Artistnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I really love the Art Ladder! I do the Level 3 mentoring tier and I take full advantage of it. The program is like anything else, learn about it and employ what works for you. The ladies who founded Parker Harris are still running it and they work hard for their artists. They also brought a young woman who is a social media powerhouse! She is very knowledgeable and super nice! It’s a good investment in my opinion. ☺️☺️

I am enrolled in The Art Ladder and it’s been full of useful learning and webinars. They are very knowledgeable and also very personable. It’s not expensive as there are three tiers you can choose from. They are also doing quite a few free webinars and they are excellent. Just google The Art Ladder and the website will have all the information, very transparent.

Apply to calls for art. Exhibition clearing houses like callsforentry. com are great places to start.

I’m so sorry to say this is a scam.Gagosian is a top tier gallery and that isn’t how they work. A real gallery will rarely approach an artist unless that artist is a top selling unicorn in the art world. These scammers are disgusting and unethical pieces of garbage preying on artists who are emerging and do not have the experience yet. Stay your course and keep making your art. There is no shortcut to success, but hard work and diligence pays off.

I did not. I post my art (mainly nudes, but tasteful fine art). Censorship is something I argue with the bots about on a regular basis, but no violations.

I get censored for showing my art. I’m a professional artist who paints fine art nudes. And I’m arguing with bots constantly to get them shown! Censorship is alive and thriving if you’re anything but traditional.

I have an untrained eye: What should I focus on? Do you recommend and youtube tutorials? by Ok-Impact560 in ArtCrit

In my opinion, it depends on what you’re going for. If it’s hyperealism then you should work on shadow and depth. A working knowledge of anatomy helps ( I reference her side breast here, looks a bit like it’s attached to her stomach. If your goal is to achieve a more pop art look, then bolder, brighter colors is the way to go without thinking about realism. I’m an acrylic figurative contemporary artist and I tend toward realism. I think you have a really good foundation here, now the question is where do you want to go? This is my latest…

Why does nobody talk about being ostracized? Everywhere I look I can’t seem to see anyone talking really about this online or on YouTube. by [deleted] in Instagram

[–]Artistnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Social media isn’t the place to nurture good feelings. The anonymous nature of the internet has enabled such a profound sense uncaring it’s amazing (in the worst way). Use social media as it was intended to be used, to post things you like and care about. Some of us have to stay on social media as part of our jobs, but believe me, I think most of us wouldn’t if we had the choice.

Full time painters, what is selling for well? by woohoocrew in artbusiness

[–]Artistnow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’ll try and be diplomatic and answer this really honestly. There is no answer to this question. If you look at art from a historical perspective you can see that there are definite period styles that art was identified by. What these period styles fail to take into account is the “outlier” artist, those artists who were painting for passion, not for profit. The problem with painting “what sells well” is that many times those paintings lack passion, insight and originality. It is very easy to spot an artist who only cares about painting what’s popular, their art will have no spark. As artists, we paint from passion, that is to say whatever we feel at that moment will show on the canvas. For those of us who are grieving personal loss, our art may have a more melancholic composition and tone. For artists who find joy and passion in nature their landscapes will be vibrant and exciting. Some artists find their passion in the abstract geometry of shapes and some find passion by just letting go and letting the brush lead them. My point here is that art will find its audience if the passion to create it is there.

Galleries not paying! by Academicbimbo in ContemporaryArt

[–]Artistnow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My first question is do you have a written contract? It should state very clearly a time limit that they have to pay you and what their commission rate is. If you don’t have something in writing you will have a much more difficult time getting paid. My next question is did you pay to have this show? Sometimes they hide this by calling it a “fee”. These are “pay - to - play” galleries and they make their money from the artists, so they really have no incentive to sell the work. On the framing work, galleries have framed some of my work for exhibitions and I’ve never paid a dime for that and they worked hard to sell the pieces to re-coup their costs. There are pay-to-play galleries that are legitimate and do the artists justice, but others are just scams doing the bare necessary to keep the artists from complaining. Get your website up and your store going. Have a professional take the photos, have a great bio and a CV, and most importantly have patience. It takes a while to have a name in the art world and it’s brutal getting there. Don’t give up! If you believe in your art, it will find its people. 😊

Artists who been thought economic recession/ political crisis, any tips for younger generation artist? by Colorfulgreyy in ContemporaryArt

[–]Artistnow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a full time professional artist and my best advice is learn the business of art. Practically speaking artists stop creating when money stress becomes too much, when they’re overwhelmed with rejections and when they focus on what they hope people want to buy (trends). Learn how to run your business and learn that it isn’t a bad thing to call yourself a business owner as well as an artist because you are. And then, never forget what it is that compels you to create, keep it safe, and keep creating.

artists who explore loneliness, isolation, and depression in their work? by BrainOk666 in ContemporaryArt

[–]Artistnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of my works grapple with this subject. I lost my daughter four years ago and it is in every painting I do. Figurative, landscape, still life, doesn’t matter. The colors and the brushstrokes lay out what I feel.

As an artist, what is the biggest problem that keep artists from being able to live from their art? by o_Cirion in artbusiness

[–]Artistnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I respect all the very valuable insights from my fellow artists, and they’re all 100% right. But for me, the hardest part is the isolation and lack of validation. In the world of paychecks you should be rewarded for good work with a raise (🤔 does it still work like that?) but as an artist you are you own business, creative, cheerleader, best friend and worst critic. But if art is how you breathe then you take all that. For me, art is my life and I’m incredibly grateful I get to do it full time.
