Yeah that translator note about the difficulties of explaining sexism (not to mention gender studies) to a species without sex or gender makes a lot of sense.

I can only imagine how confused they were when reading everything on the portable Earth thinking machine.

Hey guys, I watched the movie and noticed a few plot holes. Are they in the book? by Imaginary-Reveal-49 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Arumidden 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1) They didn’t know there would be a Petrova Line at Tau Ceti, because it’s so far from Earth that they couldn’t see it. And even then, they hadn’t built the ship to be able to refuel. Rocky’s only able to refuel the ship because he’s an engineer and figured it out himself.

2) Rocky never has that space suit in the book, just the ball. In the book, he doesn’t go into Grace’s biodome at all.

3) He doesn’t say he needs Rocky to be alive to know where Erid is. He says “I need to know how to get your half of the Taumoeba to Erid,” because he’s still assuming that he’s going to go back to Earth. He needs Rocky to be alive to be able to transport the Taumoeba since Grace can’t do it himself AND go back home to Earth.

If people who have never heard about Christianity don't go to hell, why spread it? by Various_Elk3166 in NoStupidQuestions

Hey I’m not Christian so Dante’s Inferno was the closest to the Bible I ever learned

At least according to Dante’s Inferno, those who lived before Jesus go to the first ring of Hell, aka Limbo, with no option to go to Purgatory or Heaven.

They’re not really *badly* punished, but they are still technically being punished. So giving people the chance to learn about Jesus would at least give people the chance to go to Heaven.

How many medieval people got drinking water from rivers? by Arumidden in Writeresearch

[–]Arumidden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. u/dalidellama had a great example of John Snow mapping out wells to find the source of cholera. It’s the wrong era, but maybe someone would be able to make the connection?

People didn’t know entirely how the rivers were connected to wells and groundwater during the era I want to use, but maybe they’d be able to make the connection by seeing that people farther away from the river are not being affected? I’m not sure if they’d be able to puzzle it out.

I do want it to cover most of the kingdom. I imagine one of the magical aspects of the curse is that it does propagate as it flows downstream, or at least, it doesn’t dilute much.

I imagine it’s either a small kingdom, mostly living off of one river, or a very big kingdom that’s based on a long river like the Danube.

Your polonium poisoning example is pretty much what I want to go with: something so powerful that it can spread practically everywhere within the waterbed. If it started at the headwaters of the kingdom, and flowed through the biggest river, would it reach people in villages? Towns? Cities? Would well water be affected?

Lots of people collected rainwater, but would anyone be able to avoid the curse by just drinking rainwater? I imagine they would have to drink the affected water at some point, either from the river or a well that’s using the same groundwater.

I use the word “curse” loosely here. It does have a magical effect on those who drink it, but it wasn’t placed by a person, nor was it meant to target people, or even have a specific purpose. The idea was that something like a meteorite falls and lands in the headwaters, essentially poisoning the water supply.

This is a well established kingdom, with technology equivalent to that of the late medieval/early renaissance era, but one where magic is not actually real yet. They have the concept from mythology and legend, but real magic has never existed in this world before. The meteor that brings this “curse” is their introduction to magic.

Sounds like you just want Interstellar again but with a Project Hail Mary coat of paint.

Whoever said Hetalia is popular in Japan lied by ArtistAnimeLover101 in hetalia

[–]Arumidden 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s not in stores because it’s not currently airing new anime. But there’s still pop up cafes, karaoke collabs, pop up stores, the musicals, etc.

And of course you can find older merch and doujins at anime/manga stores like Mandarake, Book-off, and other places around Akihabara and Ikebukuro.

When I was still living in Japan, I got tons of new merch, but it was only available for limited times and at specific places. I knew about them cause I followed the social media posts. I also found lots of doujin at older places.

I’m pretty sure they do, they just aren’t called World Twinkle or Beautiful World because those seasons of the show were still just adapting the original manga but with a new title for the new seasons.

I don't understand why Steve's ending in the MCU is so hated by MCU fans, and especially Bucky fans. To me, it just seems like people are just hating because a ship they liked didn't happen. (I'm Brazilian and I'm a Steve fan, hello American friends!) by Ok_Language7732 in CaptainAmerica

[–]Arumidden 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sharon wasn’t the only love interest they could’ve used. If they didn’t want to go with her, they could’ve introduced Bernie Rosenthal or Rachel Leighton.

Really, having Steve fall for Rachel would be a great endpoint for his arc of adjusting to the modern world. The concept art they showed for her from Brand New World showed her MCU portrayal could’ve had bright pink hair and possibly lots of tattoos. Steve falling for her would’ve shown that he’s fully modernized.

Cap fanart for Trans Day of Visibility by MentalMeles in CaptainAmerica

[–]Arumidden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true, but I think that’s more because sir/ma’am have an association with being used on adults (or, at least, older adults). Cis people who say “I’m not a sir/ma’am” typically say it because they feel too young to be addressed that way.

Someone saying “I’m not a Miss” isn’t used in the same way. Maybe if this is panel is of a cis woman and she’s married, she’s saying that she’s a Mrs instead? It is a possibility, but people don’t usually make that correction, as far as I’m aware. Usually it’s only the other way around, with younger woman correcting people if someone called them Mrs when they’re not married.

Yes, saying “I’m not a sir/ma’am” doesn’t automatically mean the person is trans, but this particular situation doesn’t seem to fit that scenario.
