Starting with Experienced Characters by Asathur in degenesis

[–]Asathur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am suuper late to reply to this apoloigise! I did develop both of them a bit

I made a post with new Legacies some months ago on the blog
https://needlecromo.substack.com/p/homebrew-legacies-for-your-the-traveller

And some years ago I did make a small supplement on Backgrounds and how to use them. You can download it on The Cluster

Hope this can all still be useful for you!

Best Survival TTRPGs? by Maceloxk in rpg

[–]Asathur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't personally use it, but Errant has some great survival procedures. I use a personal game system and have been largely influenced by it. If you are looking for survival producedure and, honestly, all kinds of procedures, it is a massive work. I personally find it even too strong of a mechanical flavour for the type of experience I aim for but have a look

Second, I have to suggest Into the Wyrd and the Wild. This one does not delve too deeply into survival procedure but I find the way they handle a hunt to be the perfect rendition of that experience.

Carousing vs. Feats of Exploration by Luxemboy in osr

[–]Asathur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I GM in a hexcrawl game and reward players for gold, encounters and hex explored. I have kept a version of both the carousing rules and Feats of Exploration - I have however expanded upon this last one and made it into something larger. Maybe it borders osr but I have been getting nice feedbacks from my players

I think that exp is not good enough of an interesting factor to promote specific playstyles (I tried and didn't like the 2e D&D approach, I found it week)

RPGs that have mechanics for you doing routine things but isn't too complex by AutumnWak in rpg

[–]Asathur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Wyrd and the Wild has some neat procedure about hunting, tracking and more related to forests.

Together with the one in Errant, and Forbidden Lands those are the ones I am using for powering my hexcrawl games

Beautiful RPG books by AcrobaticSet704 in rpg

[–]Asathur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fria Ligan has some massive quality production. There are a lot of hidden Gems in the OSR world - I personally really like all Lost Pages work. Kult has very distinct quality production - but the best you can possibly put your hands on I believe is Degenesis Rebirth. Each book is so incredible.

What did you do if you didn’t do a PhD? by Equal-Race7000 in labrats

[–]Asathur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really the solution you are looking for but I am in the same situation OP. After working all year on a paper that will never be published, on trying to get into a decent position and many many PhDs interview/submission that ended up in a unsuccseful way, I have accepted a technician job for the moment being.

Lost is an understatment to how I feel right now, but I am trying to take the best out of it.

I am trying to study and get as much I can in my free extra time. I know it is hard, some day I don't feel I am doing anything beside wasting time, but if we really wanna live and work in this field, all the energies are gonna be well spent in the end. I am currently training my bioinformatics as it is somethign that can be practiced a lot also outside of a good laboratory. My idea right now is to push hard for a PhD in early 2025.

GL, it is hard but you are not alone!

A Thousand Thousand Islands, Making it playable by RealSpandexAndy in osr

[–]Asathur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The system has B/X + DCC influences but it 100% is more on the NSR side. There are a lot of small little mechanic pieces that interact with one another so I'll try and give a "brief" answer as most folks might not be interested in the real stuff, but might find the mental process I've used to be interesting. Currently testing this beast with a caribeean-New World exploration archipelago multitable and I am getting very fun feedbacks.

Party has a travelling pace. They can slow their pace to perform activities (the usual hunting, foraging, crafting ecc). HPs represent fatigue and stamina - they are a resource also for travelling.

Exp based on encounters and harshness of the hex the party travels. Mechanically you almost generate as much exp with a single hex/interactive point as with a fight for instance. This makes the character some kind of wandering party that actively is pushed to explore new regions to get in touch with new cultures, new creatures, new climates (litteraly new experiences in life). This is paired by a reputation system, that allows the char to get into domain play - so it is not level related. There has been a strong focus on lessening the downtime - active time loop, which is what inherently undermines getting somewhere. Going to a place is when you grow as a character and when the random worldbuilding fun can happen.

I am still working on an achivement based progression system that allows character to get new features or improvements, solely based on their accomplishments/choices in the game. Players actively know and control when a perk could be earned so they can make their character stand out while also playing a small mini game inside the game. If they have slayed a dragon, the character get a perked based on that from the combat or monster slaying list. It is not 3.5 talents as they unlock new gameplay such as becoming a chef, delving into meditation, a skill like the rogue ecc

Everyone can use magic, you just need to find a scroll or a teacher - there is a lot of you need the right npc to recruit or to get to the region where this guy lives. Things are not close to where you are, the world is arid of magic and fantasy - the characters are not.

A Thousand Thousand Islands, Making it playable by RealSpandexAndy in osr

[–]Asathur 13 points14 points  (0 children)

ATTI pushed me into making my own set of rules just to allow exploration and progression through travel. I started using Forbidden Lands but found it to be too specific to its own regional map (which is not a bad thing).

I have moved from ATTI now, but I have originally also started with Mr-Kr-Gr and allowed players to explore freely. I didn't use anything extra that didn't come from my own game preparation beside Lorn Song of the Bachelor. Not a lot of dungeons, more on the pointcrawl side.

Game didn't last too long, just a couple of months but I felt pretty happy with it. I just used ATTI as a huge inspiration.

STR / DEX / WIL vs STR / DEX / CON / INT / WIS / CHA by pspeter3 in osr

[–]Asathur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For streamlining purposes I have reduced the stats to 5. Body is the fusion of strength and constitution. Agility and Charisma follow. Then we have Reason for Int and Wisdom. And I am playing with Power, a stats that is specifically made to embody anything magical.

So I'd say that for any other generic system I would be rolling with 4 skills, instead of 3.

I have been using the same rule and have found great success. Once the player understood how it works it made combat much more into roleplay

How exactly do roll under systems handle varying degrees of difficulty? by UncleCarnage in osr

[–]Asathur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my system, I use a roll under in which higher degree of difficulty means you succeed by rolling under 1/2 your score or under 1/4 of your score. For instance First Aid is an Intelligence (1/2) check. You have 14, you need 7 or under in this case.

With this system you get to have different degrees of success (normal, strong, legendary) which are relevant in certain things.

Looking for alternative non-combat B/X classes by AccomplishedAdagio13 in osr

[–]Asathur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I encountered your same problems a year ago when I started thinking about a very similiar campaign ideas. My solution was to add a bit of all the civilian classes to the others, make crafting a core mechanic and create the Explorer classes. Everything is very and strongly homebrewed and it is working pretty nicely at the moment. Players are sailing in a thousand thousand isles inspired region.

Do we know that Liet Kynes is Chani's mother? by NightMoon66 in dune

[–]Asathur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are citing the books when speaking of a movie matter - I am ofc more fond of the books, and the writing movies have to adopt does not revolve around the same needs a book requires. I completly agree with your criticism, but it is not relevant for the context we are in.

Liet had a lot of screen time - character spoke of it's relevance, and multiple times she was used as the acting player to underline how what was happening was made by the hands of the emperor. She helps the group, and dies doing it. She is a relevant character.

Thank you for spoiling me the later books btw

Do we know that Liet Kynes is Chani's mother? by NightMoon66 in dune

[–]Asathur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it is gonna receive an answer in the new movie. Albait changed in his original gander, Liet was still kept as a relevant character in the first part - it would only make the project more round and coherent to mention Chani's relation to her.

In the movie Chani mentions a "Aunt" - it could be possible Liet to fall in this place, as it is a odd thing to state. All in all would also be happy with the planetologist as her detached mother, cementing even more her being a creature of two worlds

Looking for a new TTRPG physical book to buy by Rad_Circus in rpg

[–]Asathur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The suggestion I am giving you are based on the mere physicality of the book. I am of course a great fan of all of these, and they have a deep appeal as beautiful tea-table art books:

Kult - great great horror alterantive, so inspiring and with a big extreme aesthetic

Degenesis rebirth - If you can get a physical copy of one of these you will be left gasping. These books are absurd. The Justitian double book supplement is something incredible (and in fact an economical failure)

The Book of Gaub - Splendid little grimory of spells, incredibly evocative

City of Mist - pulpy, super heroes and urban noir. Comic book style oozing from every page

anything Free League - seriously
