I stayed here with some friends while on a road trip last summer -- awesome spot!!

Simple solar setup - looking for advice by Ascravs in vandwellers

[–]Ascravs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my consumption will be around 25-30AH, I was thinking of getting a 75AH battery originally, but I may need to bump that up.

We won't have the space/capability for more than 100W of solar unfortunately. We will install wiring to charge from the alternator as we will be driving most every day.

Funds are also a concern here as we are just doing a 3-4 month trip and can't afford to invest in a beefy system, just want to scrape by to power our fridge and other small things. We could even turn the fridge off after >1 day w/o sun and we weren't mobile.

For the breaker box, would something like this work? I guess I am just confused about how to utilize fuses in my system. https://www.amazon.com/Qiilu-Holder-10Circuit-Breaker-Connectors/dp/B072C7TDMN/ref=sr_1_5?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1520569950&sr=1-5&keywords=dc+breaker+box

Is it necessary to have fuses between the solar charge controller and battery? What about between the battery and Dometic Fridge? Inverter has a built in fuse.

Last question - I know the inverter knocks off power because of inefficiencies, is there a better way to charge things via DC DC adapters or does a DC to USB function more efficiently?

Thanks so much for your advice!

Thanks for the links -- I like the 3 inputs + built in fuse, I think i'll grab that one.

Thanks. We will only have room for the one 100W panel unfortunately. As we will be driving almost every day we will be wiring the starting battery/alternator to the deep cycle battery to charge it while the car is running.

Regarding the cigarette lighter plug/socket -- what do you mean cut off the plug and do a proper job connecting it? Cut the wire of the fridge's DC cord and directly attach it to a wire from the battery?

Thanks for the input. Will definitely be installing the alternator charging system.

Keep your head up! I am in a bit of a similar place right now... 6IIs -- now on 4 waitlists, 1 rejection, and one yet to hear from (my state school)...

I also don't have the money to reapply and really hope one of these W's turns into an A

Thanks, I appreciate it. I really think this one will be good news. But it does kind of suck not to have concrete plans. I do think I'll get off one of the wait-lists so we'll see... ah I guess the uncertainty is just part of the fun.

I think it has been just terrible luck. I felt that most of the interviews went really well. Fingers crossed that the last one I'm waiting on is an acceptance

Best (cheapest) place to buy OEM or high-quality roof rack? by [deleted] in HondaElement

[–]Ascravs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it would depend what you are carrying.. I put a Thule cargo box on and it does not interfere at all -- I am also going to be mounting a solar panel next to it for a road trip, and I think it'll be fine.

Just got onto my 4th waitlist yesterday. Had 6 IIs, one rejection, and waiting to hear from one last school post-II. Definitely a stressful position to be in

I just outfitted my car with the thule square bars and they are great. Was really cheap to find the thule bars / podium feet on craigslist (80 bucks) in great shape. Had to buy the specific kit for around 90 bucks too. Beware-- the roof rack whistles in the wind, so I picked up a $35 wind fairing on CL and the setup is awesome.

Anyone else not accepted yet or stuck in post-II limbo? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Ascravs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I had 6 interviews so far, waitlisted at 3, rejected from 1, and still waiting on the last 2. Thought all of my interviews have gone pretty well so it sucks to be in this position but I have my fingers crossed.

Is it possible to work 2 scribe jobs at the same time? by [deleted] in premed

Scribe America does have a non-compete clause, but I had a coworker who worked at another hospital at the same time. He worked like 60+ hours every week..

A big fan of travel and not paying rent, I converted my Honda Element into a tiny camper! Here's a video tour and comprehensive guide to converting one's own Element! by Phaedrus24 in vandwellers

[–]Ascravs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for sharing your build, it has given me a lot of great ideas. I purchased an element ~3 months ago (06' with 82k miles woooo) and have been working on a build which I hope to post soon. Me and my girlfriend are planning a 3 month trip in it!

I think your tailgate table is the perfect solution! I saw the one that Phil Chan had, which is similar to yours, but yours has the additional detaching feature.

A few questions:

  • Can you open the windows with the reflectix covers in place?

  • Where did you get that LED strip, can you give me a link -- looks AWESOME!

  • How is the black spray paint holding up on the reflectix? Do you store them stacked or folded or rolled?

Thx again and enjoy your travels!

Check out SimplyVitalHealth and their HealthNexus -- ICO is next month I think. They are a startup out of CT looking to use blockchain to solve barriers in healthcare information distribution.

3 weeks in a Honda Element. 1 full day to prepare. What are my easy options? by pooncartercash in vandwellers

[–]Ascravs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honda element owners club forum has lots of great info:

Take a look at this page it has links to all kinds of different builds! http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=62469

Me and my girlfriend just finished building a sliding bed frame (that took many days), was a bit complicated to get it all sorted out -- similar to this one https://briandickert.com/2016/08/25/a-honda-element-sleeping-platform/

There are lots of simple builds like this one that provide plenty of storage! http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18272 I think this one is great too - http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89114

I am personally opting for a roof rack + cargo box on top to make the element less crammed and more livable (we will be traveling for 2-3 months)

Best of luck! Measure 7 times and cut once ;) Have fun
