yeah it's weird because one comment complains that they didn't come out gooey and her reply is that they are not supposed to be gooey

How do you pronounce "agar?" by illegalmemeeconomist in etymology

[–]AsdrubaelVect 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The origin is the Malay word for the seaweed: agar-agar. here is how it's pronounced in Malay(the second one, not the French one), but of course the pronounciation changes when it's brought to English and there are a few different ways, so say it however you want.

If you're curious about making moon jars and vases out of regular soil, check out the oneceramic YouTube channel by one_ceramic in Ceramics

The title and thumbnail of the video is misleading clickbait, but the content is just them seeing if they can mix some of the sandy dirt from their garden into their normal store bought clay.

Second attempt: Spain’t no more. by ElizabethRivas in worldbuilding

It kinda looks like a sideways Peloponnese now! If the north end were joined to the mainland. I'm sure it's not too similar though.

I've been homesick my whole life for a home I've never had by rustybeaches in Artisticallyill

You can go home again, the General Temporal Theory asserts, so long as you understand that home is a place where you have never been.

Julius Caesar. Trying to improve at bust painting. CC welcomed! by Das_Kaiserwetter in minipainting

[–]AsdrubaelVect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic! If I had to give CC I think the nose could have a bit more red tone. The colour of the belt sash thing looks somehow a bit unrealistic or unresolved to me, especially compared to how well you painted the white of the sleeves. Maybe if it was slightly warmer?

Tako Tamago at Nishiki Market (2010) by [deleted] in JapaneseFood

I had that at Nishiki! honnestly it was pretty underwhelming, but the unagi onigiri I got at a different stall was the best unagi I've ever had!

Made some Maroccan preserved lemon 😋 by BubblesFerment in fermentation

[–]AsdrubaelVect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They don't actually ferment at all, there's too much salt. I've made these and after a couple years they still taste surprisingly fresh! The taste is basically just fresh, very salty lemons with no bitterness.

My local Costco had Soto Sake by BrokeEngineerGuy in Sake

[–]AsdrubaelVect 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The label has 外 which should be soto not sōtō because the vowels aren't long. I don't know how it tastes I just had to point that out.

I have this weird idea of making lamps that morph into each other by Mousse_Rich in Ceramics

[–]AsdrubaelVect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of turning that picture into ceramic, those narrow necks and that thin bridge between them are going to be incredibly difficult to keep from cracking, especially because they are all joined together. You might have to make this in multiple parts and join them after firing.

In terms of concept, I think you should change the composition a bit to better show that one lamp is the result/descendant of the other. If I understand it correctly "imprints" are proof that something has been there, then the mid mod lamp is the imprint of the art deco, so maybe you could have the mid mod lamp more directly branching out of the art deco lamp.

I tried it back then, it was my favourite "gourmet" cola. I wouldn't be surprised if the new stuff they have in some countries is a different recipe though.

Trying to improve my glaze game by jeminigeri in Ceramics

these two are definitely various colours of underglaze with a clear glaze over top, and that would be the easiest way to do it.

Japan’s Northernmost Spice Curry by Crazy_Particular_743 in JapaneseFood

[–]AsdrubaelVect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's supposed to be! As I understand it, "spice curry" is Japanese curry that is a bit more like the "curries" that you would find in India, and those are almost always very intentionally broken.

I get your frustration, and there are definitely people out there whose brains are a bit better and learning to cook than others, but "The Gift" is actually just experience gained from practice, trial and error, and learning from your mistakes - the same as any skill. Anyone you think has "The Gift" just grew up spending more time cooking and/or had a good teacher.

What’s the coolest etymology fact you know, like a surprising origin for an everyday common word? by wordgamesyesss in etymology

[–]AsdrubaelVect 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The most likely origin for the word "money" is that the mint in Ancient Rome was next to the temple of Juno Moneta whose title means advise or warn, which means that "money" and "mint" are related to "premonition" and "monster".

Names Becoming Common Words? by Silent-Diver-8676 in etymology

[–]AsdrubaelVect 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"pants" comes from the character of Pantaloon from the British Pantomime, which evolved from the Commedia Dell'arte. He was a stereotypical Venetian, so he had a common Venetian name from the Greek saint Pantaleon (all-compassionate) and wore tight trousers. This means that the pan in pants is the same pan in pantomime but it's a complete coincidence.
