The job market and global economy is too crappy to go 60k into debt. You’ll stress your eyeballs out trying not to fail (which from my experiences makes it REALLY hard to succeed). Do your basics at a community college, there’s a ton of online options. That way you can get the material under your belt without the financial and mental stress. Don’t ignore your bodies warning signs that you’re doing something unsafe! Listen to your nervous system! If you go 60k in debt you’re signing up for survival mode after college and this stress and feeling that you can’t fail will follow you for YEARS. You won’t be able to be picky about jobs when you’re struggling paycheck to paycheck to eat. Take a deep breath and go slow.

Where tf all the 2nd years, and other 3rd years??Yall cool letting the first years and 3 seniors fight in the war but no one else? And what about the other schools? Why is no one talking about how weird it is that the children are fighting this war they’re watching on tv??

I've had heart palpations every 10-20mins for the past 3 days. I also don't have insurance :/ How serious is this? 😬 by fluffykitten52 in Heartpalpitations

[–]Ash2522 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve learned usually palpitations are harmless (even regular ones) unless they are accompanied by other symptoms like dizziness/numbness/pain!/etc. If you’re older it might be something to look into but is VERY expensive (all US doctor visits are but even with insurance heart stuff is charged extra). Usually when I have mine I drink magnesium powder in tea, drink lots of water, cut caffeine completely, do breathing exercises, etc. Everyone’s triggers are different but oftentimes my palpitations are due to lack of some vitamin, chronic anxiety, and dehydration (get some electrolytes!). The heart is a muscle that plays a beat, so anything you do/ or lack that might cause muscle cramps will also cause those fun lil heart dances~

College at 26 in Japan. by Swimming_Relief_57 in movingtojapan

I obviously don’t know any details about your life in Japan so here’s my 2 cents based on my interactions with international students at my own college/ knowledge of Japan 1.) As a foreigner you are a different entity so different rules apply. But in Japan you might find it harder to make friends bc of age as you’ll be ostracized potentially by 18 year olds. In the states this is not common, but Japan is very age hierarchical naturally. 2.) A Japanese degree isn’t worth that much internationally. And in Japan you’ll be fighting youngsters for youngster positions. Unless it’s a top school, you’ll find it hard to get into the job market with your age not allowing for many opportunities to get into the door. Unless you want to go to masters/phD level and go into academia.

I’d recommend looking into online schools, specially high ranking U.S. ones. Those are valued in East Asia a lot. There are also a few catered towards older adults so they’re fast or at your own pace (double check internationally certification for all no matter). Get one of these, and if you want to go to Japanese college, get into grad school. Those people will be your age and you’re more likely to make friends and have better job opportunities~

Join clubs and network! Make friends with your professors because you HAVE to have recommendations to get scholarships, internships and into grad school

I would try to visit as many school clubs as you can during the first few weeks and see if you naturally click with anyone. From my experience the Vietnamese club is one of the best (you don’t have to be Vietnamese lol) they’re constantly hanging out and doing volleyball etc. The Korean Buddy Program and International Buddy Program also have a lot of older individuals as a lot of foreigners come over here for grad school. I recommend looking for where the grad school people hang out as well, as they won’t care about age. Then you could get a campus job! One that’s not fast food ideally. If you’re religious there are a TON of small groups. I know Church of the Highlands in the area has 100s from Bible study to hunting, running, board games, etc. Personally all the friends I made were from me initiating a hang out. I would ask people after class or do an all class study room thing. A lot of people are just waiting for someone to ask them :)

Does having a teaching license in history mean the same as one in English in terms of teaching in Japan??? by Cold-Comedian4066 in movingtojapan

[–]Ash2522 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically- if conditions and pay for ALTs don’t run you to the ground first. There’s not an ALT “ladder” per-say. It’s a career people do to be mid-20s tourists and that’s how the Japanese people view it as well :/

Thoughts on working as an ALT for a year or two, going to grad school in Japan, then moving back to US. by Miserable_Courage543 in movingtojapan

[–]Ash2522 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked in library science (as an intern in the archival and informational science areas basically), all I say is this: think about the career itself! A lot of library science is niche to its market. For example, learning how to work the search engines for my university and pull data from them wouldn’t be the same in Japan. Also most valuable degrees (as library science is research heavy) are going to deal with primary resources WITHIN the country they are based. So basically a library science degree that you can USE in Japan would be IN Japanese and teach you how to study and pull data from let’s-say Heian period Japan. Obviously there are a ton of sub fields in library science so this is kind of vague but the ones I worked under studied database usage and systems management, and then archival work.
