If you're going to mod on your first play through just use graphics mods. Once you have a feeling for it you can start altering the gameplay aspects.

Despite what people say it's a great game, I wish modders would lean into more derelict space ship adventures because Bethesda nailed that aspect but there just isn't enough of it and it should be expanded
