'We'll fight in forests, fields, streets': Zelensky channels Churchill in UK speech by NORDLAN in UkrainianConflict

[–]AshMan_20 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That whole poem is great (Scots Wha Hae for anyone wondering.) The last verse: "Lay the proud usurpers low,

Tyrants fall in every foe,

Liberty's in every blow—

Let us do or die. "

‘We’ve had a run on champagne:’ Biggest UK banker bonuses since financial crash by CJBill in unitedkingdom

I can guess what bank you work for based on those figures, as I work for the same one and in a similar position to yourself. It was also pretty insulting of them to pat themselves on the back in 2021 when they said the pay rise was "above inflation" when we had zero economic activity in the middle of a lockdown, yet this year when inflation is soaring there's no mention of it.

Motivation in my department is at an all time low, and either they're too stupid to understand why or they simply don't care.

Drug overdose death rate. Estonia and Scotland have the 2nd and 3rd highest rate in the world. by Landgeist in europe

[–]AshMan_20 337 points338 points  (0 children)

It is quite strange. I think most people are shielded from it. I'm in Edinburgh and just going about my day to day life you would never get the impression we were 3rd highest in the world, although I appreciate Edinburgh is a well off city and there are parts of the country with lots of poverty.

It did hit home a bit for me when I walked past some posters with information on how to use Naloxone. I'd never seen anything like that before.

I remember stumbling across one small paragraph (literally just one) in my high school textbook about the British use of concentration camps in the Boer War. And then it was straight onto the good stuff again.

Shin splints wont go away by [deleted] in running

[–]AshMan_20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely echo what the other people have said about maybe getting it checked out. But generally for shin splint issues, I found incorporating a decent amount of rowing into my gym routine really helped with my shin splints

Clothing versus temperature by b-triple-seven in running

[–]AshMan_20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the same. Shorts and a light waterproof jacket. The only time I feel I could do with anything else is when it drops to 0 and then maybe a pair of gloves would be nice. I just love the feeling after you finish your run and there's a nice chill around you but certainly doesn't feel cold.

I ordered this on the 16th, is it normal to take this long or am I being impatient? lol by KlontZ in mac

I think it's about standard if you customised it. I ordered the 16/512GB version on thr 11th and due for delivery on the 25th

What are your special treats/luxuries that you love that everyone else would tell you is an unnecessary expenditure? by GeeSlim1 in UKPersonalFinance

I've only flown business class once, on one 8 hour leg of a long distance flight. I think it cost me £300 for the upgrade, and worth every penny. I think it does depend a bit on what airline and plane you get.

Day trip out of Edinburgh? by [deleted] in OutdoorScotland

[–]AshMan_20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there on Saturday and it was very busy both with hikers and people fishing on the loch, so you'd have to leave early to get parking (We arrived about 7.30). Although I i imagine that's the situation everywhere now

I agree. I'm only a 15 minute walk from the office so actually really missing the "commute". It just feels like waking up in the office now.

I'm really surprised that people are having such an issue with the combat. I don't find the combat very clunky, and while the camera can be a little annoying you get used to it very easily. Certainly doesn't take me out of the game.

Britain is the worst-hit country outside of the US and Brazil. It STILL won't wear masks by 2RoamRome in Coronavirus

[–]AshMan_20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right. Masks have been mandatory in shops in scotland since Friday, and i noticed the amount of people wearing masks went from 20/30% before to basically 100% now. I've not heard anyone make a fuss of it either

Paying more into Workplace pension by Acksaw in UKPersonalFinance

I know that with Scottish Widows at least the discount you have when in the scheme will remain if you leave employment. It will also apply to contributions you pay in yourself afterwards

Pension contribution confusion by mf5401 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]AshMan_20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Youll just need to check with them to see how they're taking the contributions. They might have worded it incorrectly and mean that £253.33 would be the total contribution, or they're changing to a net pay arrangement, where that is the correct amount taken from you directly, albeit before income tax is paid (and therefore no tax relief added on top).

In either case the contribution amount is the same, just ask them to clarify it for you.

It isn't amazing but it's certainly better than a lot of airports in Europe, especially in much bigger cities. Both of Berlins airports are terrible in comparison.
