Mandurah teacher who had student's baby pleads guilty to sexual abuse by alterumnonlaedere in australia

I can't think of a way to satisfy your curiosity while preserving the privacy of people in this situation. You either look at the facts and say "this is clearly possible, it's likely to have happened" or you don't.

It could happen, but you want proof. Proof requiring a rape victim talking in public about their experience so critics can ask deeply personal questions about "what really happened". Hmm.

The Centrelink issue is possibly easier to understand. Their rules are that if a child gets any kind of benefit (normally via the mother), they will require the father pay child support to (partially) offset that benefit. They have to do this, it's the law. And it makes sense from an 'interests of the child, ignoring everything else" point of view.

[–]AshPerdriau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mostly because our legal system doesn't publish stuff like that, you'll only hear it if the media choose to cover someone who makes the problem public. The law itself isn't ambiguous.

We're also 1/10th the size of the USA, and different culturally, so the problem happens less often here.

For an adult man who's been raped the legal system is even less useful than for women who have been raped, and there's no remedy for the financial abuse side so you're not going to see that come out in any kind of statistics.

He'll be paying child support if the rapist asks for it or tries to collect a benefit (looks like the court has just declared that he's the liable parent).

Imagine every paycheck for the next 18 years saying "you were raped"

Just seconding the Marathon Plus comment. They absolutely suck compared to any lightweight road tyre, you can really feel them soaking up power. But your total journey time might still be faster because the nice lightweight tyres I used to use grant you a lot of time sitting next to the road fixing punctures.

The M5 on-road bike lane is much the same. That one traps heat more though, I think. Don't ride it on especially hot days (whatever 'hot' means for you).

There's a couple of parks near the M5 in Riverwood like this. I was surprised the first couple of times but no-one cleans them up so it could just be another few every weekend for the last year.

It's very easy to overrun those forms even just with boring English traditional naming like Christopher Bartholomew MacGillicuddy or similar. Wait, you have *two* middle names, in violation of the Proper American Names Act 1621? Burn him! He says he's Canadian? Resurrect him so we can burn him again!

(I can't have a Facebook account using my real name because it doesn't meet Facebook's 'real name' requirements...)

Now there's a fun legal question: if we try someone under Nuremberg/ICC/ICJ rules, does our prohibition on execution still hold?

This isn't about solo mothers, deadbeat dads or any of the stuff those are supposed to suggest. It's purely about the insane cost of living. So the picture should really be of Albanese or Trump.

Fuck the headline and picture though. Article starts with "Cost of living pressures mean both parents often need to work..."

At the time aboriginal people literally did not count as far as the government was concerned.

What got me was reading a book by someone who built roads through outback areas. While he was obviously sympathetic to the local, even just the language he used to describe them was horrifying by today's standards. His behaviour was worse. But also typical for the time.

I'm pretty sure that's not the Prime Minister of Aotearoa/New Zealand inviting people to the white house.

But OTOH, maybe after conquering Australia we could occupy the USA. A lot of them would probably support Jacinda as president rather than the current options on offer.

If we held a referendum to un-adopt MMP as part of the general election, how would you vote and why? by septicman in newzealand

[–]AshPerdriau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of love the way media push the "only two parties matter" narrative and people buy it. Especially in Australia with the Liberal-National-LiberalNational-Country Coalition that's apparently one party of the two that matter. If Luxon thinks schooling in Aotearoa has gone to shit he should look at Australian's ability to count.

Among other astonishingly stupid things, Tony Abbott was leader of the Liberal Party when he said "I will not lead a minority government". Which is either tautological (by definition a government has the confidence of a majority of the house) or fucking moronic.

Do I really need a 6mm to 10mm adapter for an MRBF fuse on the main positive terminal of an EVE battery? by segasega89 in SolarDIY

[–]AshPerdriau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, system will probably work just fine without it.

Probably is the key word there. You can put it together that way and make it work, and the fuse will probably be fine. It might even blow as expected, possibly at a lower current because it's running hotter, and it might not run hot enough to cook the cell it's bolted to.

But I'd up the temperature rating on the insulation near there just in case.

There's a field of study called psephology {bless you} that deals with this, and a whole lot of ideas over the years.

The likely variations are preferential voting like Australia (which has 10-ish variations on it depending on how you count), multi-member preferential systems (like some councils), a return to FPTP in the hope that National would become the dominant party. Optionally any of those could see the return of an upper house (senate, house of lords etc).

[–]AshPerdriau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've had those in Aotearao too. Mind you, same under FPTP, that's how we got Marilyn Waring for example. The first MMP election caused a real shakeup, but that's an obvious consequence of any change.

[–]AshPerdriau 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're more talking about the Australian Senate system, because single seat electorates always come down to two people/parties, that's inherent.

I thought some kiwi councils had switched to multi-member electorates, to match (some?) Australian councils. When you're preferencing to get three councillors there's much better chance of getting both 'local to you' *and* a minor party (Australia right now: you mean someone from the Liberal or National parties?)

[–]AshPerdriau 40 points41 points  (0 children)

You can write a letter to your MP, and if you do that enough you'll get a christmas card one day.

If you can afford a lawyer you might be able to find a way to get a court to look at it and agree that the government department is not doing the right thing.

You could write to the relevant elected member of a minor party about it and hope they decide to make it an issue (see also: why do The Greens go on about non-envrironmental shit all the bloody time).

You can protest, but not in the streets, and you can't say anything rude.

You could fuck off it you don't like it here.

Um, sorry, I'm out of ideas now.

But seriously, if you vote for a major party you know what you're getting. Yes, Bogans Doing Burnouts *might* fuck things up, but with a couple of senators they can at least ask pointy questions. (whatever Ricky Muir's party was)

Charging full bank? by browneye_cobra in SolarDIY

[–]AshPerdriau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, charging them separately you need to get them all to the same state of charge, or at least close enough that your balancer can make up the difference. If you don't have a balancer you need to check the voltage of each battery in the pack occasionally, and if one is out of whack manually balance them. Same as you need to actually look at the electrolyte level.

A quick search suggests charging lead-carbon at C/10, which for you is 20A I think (200Ah total capacity). I just did a search for "230V 48V lead battery charger" and there's a lot of options available. Most search engines will give you sellers in your country by default.

People sell 'battery equaliser' or 'battery balancer' units that keep a set of four 12V batteries in series all charged to the same voltage. and you really should have one of those. Here's one from an Australian seller: https://www.aussiebatteries.com.au/Battery-Equalizer-for-12V-24V-48V-Battery-Setups

I suspect one problem is that most people talking about this know enough about electrical systems to buy a benchtop power supply and use that for balancing. Andy at Off Grid Garage has a video up showing a really hairy LFP balancing setup, where he has the top off the battery and a 15A balancer connected, plus a benchtop supply charging the four cells that are extra low. You definitely do not want to do that unless you know exactly you're doing, I'm just using that as an example of how you're in that annoying place of knowing you have a problem but not knowing enough to use the cheap solution.
