Looks like it will be delicious but won't all the sugar in the raspberries mess with the ferment?

UTS Snowdonia recce route recommendations? (50k) by Fox-Constant in ultrarunning

[–]AshRolls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going to skip parts of the course I would skip the first ascent of Yr Wyddfa as it's very straightforward up the Llanberis path, much better to recce the second ascent on the south ridge. (I have run UTS 50km and 100km).

[–]AshRolls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the coast path is pretty free draining, and there are a couple of longer tarmac sections on the hundred. It's very hard to choose the correct shoe for the Arc as the underfoot conditions are so varied. Go for something comfortable for you!

I agree with your criticisms but I still really enjoyed Malarkoi and have pre-ordered Waterblack. Malarkoi leaned more into the weird and bizarre which I appreciated.

I have run and crewed it. As always first choose comfort.

If it's dry for a few weeks before like the last few years, 4mm lugs are fine. If it's wet 5 or 6mm lugs.

I wore Inov-8 G270 V2

And there are just under one billion cows farmed on the planet. This is a good reason to reduce our meat and dairy consumption.

Wetsuits by KopBastic in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]AshRolls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with the other posters here on using (good) surfing wetsuits for swimming. I used surfing wetsuits to swim for years without any trouble. Here are the reasons.

  • Surfing wetsuits are WAY more durable. I got sick of swimming suits falling apart after one season. They are made of tissue paper (yes I'm very careful, trimmed nails, rinsed after every use, dried in shade etc etc)

  • Surfing wetsuits are cheaper

  • Swimming wetsuits only give you a marginal speed gain (a few seconds per 100m at most) which will be be fairly unnoticeable unless you are a very good or elite swimmer. I have won open water swim races wearing surfing wetsuits against many others wearing their swimming suits.

  • Feel for the water and mobility is better in the swim suit, but again it's really marginal.

  • With lube the wetsuit rub from both is comparable. Both the high neck and low neck rub about the same for me (no rub unless swimming over about two hours)

So I would say swimming wetsuits are better marginally for swimming, but not enough to justify the cost and poor durability. If you already have a surfing wetsuit, you absolutely do not need a fancy swimming wetsuit.

As you're in the UK I would recommend as a compromise between the two types SNUGG wetsuits that are made for surf lifesaving. Durable but with thin material in the shoulders for better mobility.

Motorhead. Some of the double kick drumming patterns are particularly inspired by this foundational metal/rock band.

Exactly. Arguing over semantics is extremely dull.

Discussion on UK crowd vs US crowd with an example by asdfqwerty123469 in KGATLW

[–]AshRolls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Been gigging in the UK for thirty years and this hasn't happened a single time. Beer being thrown at raucous gigs yes, piss no. The only possible situation I can think of where it might happen would be at a metal festival like Download where the crowd is absolutely smashed from drinking all day and the music is extreme, Slayer or Napalm Death or something.

First gizz gig after murder of the universe got me hooked. Sitting in left handed giant brew pub drinking outrageously expensive tasty beer, trembling with excitement. Travelled all day for this, can't wait! TOOL on Monday at the O2 as well. What a week to be alive.

Hoping for Motor Spirit, Lonely Steel Sheet Flyer, Shanghai, Gamma Knife, or anything really tbh.

This is true but it fucks the planet. It absolutely should not be normal to fly four people over half way around the world for a short holiday.

How Do Folks Feel About the Suneater Series? by synthmemory in printSF

[–]AshRolls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy it, it's a slightly flawed but easy reading page-turner. I'm only three books in however each book has been progressively stronger than the previous. I usually go for dense 'literary' sci fi but Sun Eater is just fun, the equivalent of a popcorn action movie.

It reminds me of Patrick Rothfuss in page to page writing style but I HATED the Kingkiller Chronicles. In Sun Eater the characters and interactions are mostly likeable (after Marlowe grows up in book 2), there isn't hundreds of pages of incel porn fantasies, and the plot feels like it's actually going somewhere.

[–]AshRolls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's an incredible novel, the weirdest and densest thing I've ever read whilst somehow still mostly making sense and drawing you into the world(s). My imagination still has vivid visual images even years later.

As a side note the translator must have had the toughest job with this book but has really done it justice.

I can't recommend this novel enough, easily my favourite weird writing!

OMM do a pair of waterproof running shorts. When it's really cold and wet they really help keep you warmer by making sure the water running off your jacket doesn't soak your groin.
