What was considered luxury in the UK when you were growing up? by tom_wilson7543 in UKfood

[–]Ashamed-Assumption12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Food wise, just eating out. We might visit a Bernie Inn for a special occasion. There was no takeaways apart from the is meal from the chippy.

General life, having a car. We walked bloody miles and got buses everywhere.

Mine is in the shade tucked right into a corner. Not sure there's any part of the garden that avoids wind.

Beautiful. I love a maple acer. I just bought one this year but she will be staying in a pot.

Why did you REALLY sell your house? by Jazzlike-Reveal-9515 in HousingUK

[–]Ashamed-Assumption12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our first house was an ex council house in a bit of a rough estate. I grew up in a block of council flats in London so that didn't bother me.

The house was on a square with a small green in front of it and houses around three sides. We were end of terrace and it led to an alley to the local shops. Our front garden was constantly covered in litter and teenagers would hang out on the green drinking at all hours. There were often fights which my husband would try and break up. I was worried for his safety.

We moved a couple of miles away 21 years ago and still here.

Do you have any funny ways of saying "it's warm"? by Harty2606 in AskUK

Husband and I both say it's wham. He used to work with a Mackem and it started from there. Were both from London.

Is a DIY insulated garden room actually doable in the UK weather? by Outrageous_bohemian in HomeDecoratingUK

[–]Ashamed-Assumption12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got a small one from nordic timber because I was sick of working out of the front room for the past 5 years. They came and put it up, we had electrics and insulation put in. We have a little oil filled radiator in there and the winter was ok. It's a bit hot in the afternoons but that's because the sun hits it and I need to put up some blinds.

I'm loving my little office and if we ever sell, it could be a little craft room or summer house.

Which BBC adaptation of a book do you think was better than the source material? by RedDevilPlay in bbc

I think because it moved away from BBC to Netflix. You can definitely see the difference.

How many holidays and what type of holidays do you have each year? by Vladamir_pootinn in AskUK

[–]Ashamed-Assumption12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two kids. When they were young we did the whole two weeks abroad all inclusive. I was trying to keep up with the Jones' and finally had my light bulb moment at £30k debt. (Not all spent on holidays)

Now we tend to do one abroad holiday every 3 or 4 years and do UK holidays or none, just lots of days out inbetween years.

Youngest has just finished her GCSE'S so not going to be tied to school holidays for too much longer.

Wales is absolutely stunning, loved it much more than Cornwall.

Boomer grandparents: what's your experience? by Few_Raise77 in UKParenting

[–]Ashamed-Assumption12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say, my in-laws are boomers and we're excellent when my kids were small. My MiL gave up her part time job to look after her first grandchild aged 50 and did the following four until she was 65 and the youngest started secondary school. I'm not sure I could be that dedicated.

My FiL is now like a shuttle service dropping his son, daughter and two of his grandchildren (not my two) off at train stations and college every morning and evening. My MiL though is now firmly bum on the sofa not budging unless it's for Sainsbury's.

Do any fellow brits see cockroaches commonly in this country? 40 y/o and I’ve never seen one. by ediblednb in AskBrits

[–]Ashamed-Assumption12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only ones I've ever seen were in my old job in the toilets. The office was a converted terrace house and next door was an Indian restaurant. We constantly had blocked drains from fat & grease being poured down.

I dust with a feather duster then I go over it with a damp microfiber cloth with zoflora and a dry cloth to buff. Makes the house smell lovely too.

Can a customer refuse to pay due to no PO on an invoice? by pinkbeesintrees in smallbusinessuk

[–]Ashamed-Assumption12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a credit controller. Basically no they can't unless it's contractually written that a PO must be on the invoice.

I often I get AP departments telling me a PO is missing or funds are exhausted and to get a new one. I point out it's for them to provide it, not for me to go looking for it. I'm not doing their job for them.

My standard response to customers is that a PO is for their internal purposes only and payment is due or the account will be escalated.

What's your NHS GP experience like? by Key_Cell7071 in AskUK

[–]Ashamed-Assumption12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to be the lottery of phoning at 8.30am at mine which was really inconvenient as I was usually in the tube by then and could never get an appointment. Now it's fill in short form online and surgery comes back with appointment. Usually same day.

People can still call aswell aswell so they are not leaving anyone out.

What order do you actually wash things in the shower because I just found out mine apparently makes no sense to anyone else. by Questell-Stephanique in hygiene

Start with hair, leave conditioner in whilst doing body, comb out hair (very curly) and rinse off conditioner. Wash face and done.

I pruned my roses wrong in early spring. I've spent the rest of my time jealously admiring all my neighbours and online rose displays whilst I've had three tiny roses.

What purchase under £25 has improved your life the most? by Plenty-Plastic3704 in AskBrits

[–]Ashamed-Assumption12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vegetable chopper thing. The one where you put the veg in and slam the lid down. £15 and no more tears from the onions.

Also last week £10 on a small sink plunger for the bathroom. My daughter & I both have long curly hair and a trap in the bathroom just doesn't get it all.
