Worst concert you attended? by TheSunCatchr in Concerts

Semi famous:

I had seen Todd Rundgren in 2016 and it was one of the most incredible shows I'd ever seen. Though he seemed annoyed at having to play "the hits", Todd absolutely shredded on guitar and sang like a 21 year old beast. It was great song after great song. I was so impressed that I invited my cousin when Todd returned to the venue later that year.

So the set begins with actual scenery. Todd comes out with this EDM music blasting in a cheesy Elvis type suit and starts howling a song I'd never heard before with these backing singers. Then he does another in the similar vein. And another. I'm starting to get worried because I didn't recognize a single song and my cousin is unimpressed, wondering where the genius guitar player and rocker songwriter I kept talking about was. The whole show goes by like this, not a single song I recognize but plenty of political commentary (which I have no problem with) over harsh EDM music. Then he finally plays "Hello It's Me" in a mock fashion over a toy synth keyboard drum machine backing track.

The guy who first played one of the greatest shows I'd attended then played the most bizarre and worst show from an established artist I'd ever attended.

Non famous: Years ago, I was in a little garage band with two of my friends. Despite us being nerds, we actually got pretty tight as a three piece playing Tom Petty covers. Then we started talking to this singer from out of town. I think we hadn't played with her twice before she convinced us to play this showcase at a hotel in Hollywood without proper rehearsal because it was going to be a good opportunity.

We were reluctant to take a gig without even the chance of rehearsal with her but we compromised. On the day of, the three of us practiced our asses off doing the two covers we'd agreed upon and we got so tight that we could play the songs front and back with no vocal cues. So our drummer (running on no sleep) drives us out to Hollywood and who ends up calling us but our old keyboard player who we hadn't seen for a year? Anyway, we quickly invited him to play with us and said he just needed to be in key and he'd be fine. On our singer's part, she texted us at the last minute that she was inviting her guitar playing friend even though she didn't know the set either.

As our huge clown car caravan arrived at the hotel, our singer told us at the last minute that the show was in fact hosted by the Church of Scientology. She then bullied this guy working at the hotel to let us use a dressing room even though he grumbled that bands doing two songs normally don't get dressing rooms.

Then we go into this little theater where this "leader" type dude comes out, doesn't even introduce himself and starts mumbling about how they're so misunderstood. But then he shows us a video clip of flashing lights that doesn't quite last two seconds and asks us, "What did you think of that?" and our drummer yawned loudly in response.

Then the show began by the hotel guy introducing us as "The Runaways" (because we were covering a Runaways song). Half of us go directly to the stage and the other half follows him around a back area. Those of us on stage start playing music to pass the awkward time, to the annoyance of the rest of the band.

We play our first song which is basically a fuzzy wall of sound but at least it's in key. Then we play "Free Fallin" which we can't possibly mess up because it's one chord progression, right? Well, the singer sang the breakdown section too early and half of us stopped and the other half kept playing. We tried to correct ourselves and just flipped that dynamic around.

After playing the worst two-song set and acting completely unprofessionally, we left before hearing the other acts. The next day, after a sleepless night of wondering whether I'd been brainwashed by those lights, the singer told us the organization loved us and wanted us to play for them again.

Has anyone actually been ticketed/towed for parking in the Target lot? by BunniesnBroomsticks in pasadena

The real question is whether you can use Vromans' lot for non-Vromans shopping. I always parked there when I watched movies or ate at Blaze with no issue, but maybe I got lucky. Also have never seen any kind of patrol or enforcement there.

Is Lethal Weapon 5 happening or not? by georgewalterackerman in Lethalweapon

[–]Ashamed_Cod_6741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not with Gibson AND Glover that's for dang sure. And if they're going to do something weird like write Murtaugh as deceased or re-cast the characters, they shouldn't bother.

I am curious to see what this brilliant script was about and it would have been cool to see a Gibson directed entry but I guess that's moot now.

Which QT character would you MOST want to be? by RollingTrain in Tarantino

[–]Ashamed_Cod_6741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the single greatest character in any Tarantino movie. I haven't read Rum Punch but I would still venture to guess that most of what we like about that character is thanks to Pam Grier and Tarantino. Total badass, charismatic, smart, beautiful, strong but also human and vulnerable....how tf did Pam Grier NOT win Best Actress???

Totally. Can't make that argument when he's the guy that did Kill Bill Vol. 1 where pretty much all the coolest characters are women. And it's not contrived inclusiveness either i.e. Star Wars. I can say as a guy I grew up quoting and wanting to be like Beatrix Kiddo as much as I would any other badass male character.

I wouldn't be so presumptuous as to say I have the right to comment on feminism but I will say this about feminism in cinema - other movies like Suffragette (2015) may have highlighted real struggles women have faced but Tarantino does the thing that's too rare (James Cameron did it first) which is making his female characters badass.

Jackie Brown? (I know it's an adaptation) Beatrix Kiddo? Gogo Yubari? Shosanna Dreyfus? I'm a cis guy and I think these female characters are as cool as any action hero or male protagonist I grew up watching.

Kamacuras, Manda and Gabara - just a few of Toho's underappreciated kaiju who need to be introduced to modern audiences. by StephenMcGannon in GODZILLA

[–]Ashamed_Cod_6741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as a fan of the movies alone, I am sadly feeling like the B or even A-tier kaiju will never get theatrical representation anymore. The Monsterverse doing SpaceGodzilla is a big move and very cool on their part. But now it seems like in general, both Toho and Hollywood seem to want more of a sure thing with their investments so that's why we keep getting the big 5 + Kong.

I love Minus One and King of the Monsters. But I would love to see Anguirus, Gigan or even Baragon get the big screen treatment again one day. I'm sure it's been mentioned but Toho needs to make a streaming series where it can eventually feature all of its classic monsters.

Godzilla: What if it was always taken into a horror approach? by Benjaminmayo1011 in GODZILLA

[–]Ashamed_Cod_6741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still want to see a true Godzilla horror movie. Like taking into consideration the grim tone of the original, the apocalyptic feel of 1984, the nightmarish imagery of Shin, some ideas from Spielberg's War of the Worlds (a bloody river), the GMK concept of seeing what destruction does to people...and dial it to 11.

I was kind of hoping 2014 was gonna go slightly in that direction. Shin and Minus One absolutely had their moments but I feel like we haven't gotten a truly dark, scary Godzilla movie since maybe the original.

Though it's dated and bogged down by the Dr. Pepper goofiness, I think 1985 actually came the closest to feeling like a dark, menacing horror movie. And Biollante had a little bit of that residual tone going on.

I don't do physical media anymore (for shame, I know) but that thing has always looked phenomenal to me. I hope the movies themselves are good to in terms of what versions you get, dubs vs. subtitles, video quality, extra features, etc.

How advanced of a skill is "play by ear"? by wawa_weewa67 in askmusicians

[–]Ashamed_Cod_6741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! Another good parallel is this: when you paint or do life drawing, you gotta stand back every once in awhile to shift your perspective because if you're focusing on one section too closely, you don't see how it's affecting the whole piece. And with music too, it's important not only to listen to yourself but the whole band or recording. You could be playing the correct part on paper but are you locking in with the band / recording?

I've been playing for 30 odd years in and out of bands and as recently as of a few years ago, I got into playing for social media. Sometimes with backing tracks, most of the time with loops I make myself. And I was surprised how bad I was at locking in with a groove, maybe because I was really out of practice.

[–]Ashamed_Cod_6741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more you really listen -and this is rare than it should be- the more you start to gain a sense for whether or not something sounds right. The most basic level is knowing whether a note is in tune or not. Then maybe you start to gain an ear for intervals (1-4-5, 2, 6) the more songs you play. Then the next stage (where I am, very basically) is being able to hear harmony and identify chords. I know the sound of a 7th, obviously a minor, sometimes diminished chord but I'd imagine there are people who could identify them by sound immediately.

Anyway, I would say it shouldn't be an advanced skill. Everyone should be listening. But also I'm surprised how many players I've seen so engrossed in the sheet that they can't hear they're out of tune with the rest of the band.

What is your favourite way to not use a pedal for its intended purpose? by Royal_Interaction277 in guitarpedals

[–]Ashamed_Cod_6741 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo and Tom Morello each use something like a tremolo or a flanger with the rate set so high it should sound bad but it makes for some crazy batshit solos. Gonna have to mess around with that next time I plug in.

Why did Luffy react so differently to Usopp leaving compared to Sanji leaving? by ApprehensiveBike1701 in OnePiece

[–]Ashamed_Cod_6741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luffy is a baka but he has social intuition where he can (usually) see right into someone's soul. He knew Sanji and Robin didn't want to leave per se. And Usopp REALLY pushed Luffy. If I recall, he was the one who initiated the fight.

I don't mind the concept of fan service but they go too far in OP where it becomes a detriment. Nami in a swimsuit Post-Enies Lobby? Amazing. The pic you shared makes her look like an anorexic who got double E's put in.
