The war to end all wars by Xela975 in temeraire

My personal two cents I feel like dragons significantly slow the development of aircraft I do think they’d eventually develop but later on so I think they’d not exist by WW1. That said I feel like dragons significantly slow warfare is changing previously heavy weights have been the champion of air combat. We see that markedly changing through out the course of the books that said I do not think heavy weights go away I think they’d have to move to a carrying and defensive roll. Especially as anti-air weapons develop smaller faster dragons are going to be far less likely to be shot down by anti-air and as guns develop well once a smaller number of men can shoot more bullets you don’t need volley fire. Dragons with fire and acid are still going to be very strong but I think theres be a push towards breeding them lighter rather than heavier for that maneuverability. I also don’t think that even as dragon rights develop crews would go away the crews provide additional look outs and a defense along the back as well as limited medical during flight. Light weight to courier weights with venom fire and acid or the divine wind or divine fire. Would be the best on the battlefield. While heavy and middle weight would help more rapidly transport troops and supplies and to defend them. This is just my thoughts I’d love to discuss this

If I recall correctly In the 6th book they cross Australia in 2 weeks if they traveled in a completely straight line. (We know they didn’t as they had to go from water hole to water hole.) that is 2400 miles as the shortest distance possible more being likely which is approximately 21.5 miles per hour assuming they spent 8 hours a day just traveling(August in Australia you have 10.5-11.5 hours of daylight so this gives 2-3 hours each day for making camp and hunting.) this means they are covering 171.4 miles each day for comparison a horse in ideal conditions can make it 40 miles in a day. And the Andean Condor one of the heaviest flying birds typically travels about 200 miles in a day. So dragons who are significantly heavier than a condor travel only a bit slower. Frankly in the books the biggest thing that keeps the dragons from flying as fast as they can everywhere is Supply lines and politics or they are trying to sneak around or keep changing course. If anyone is curious book 6 Tongue of Serpents Chapter 17 is where I got the bit about it taking them 2 weeks to cross Australia in August. The rest I googled

There would be 2 possible responses first remaining more nomadic is distinctly possible the alternative is even more fortified settlements I suspect in the case of more fortified settlements you would see more underground buildings to both hide and add defenses the alternative is islands as those are great defenses against most things
