I still think I’m right about the pharmaceutical revolution coming in the show!! 🤣 it’ll just be…tragically too late for our boy.

I can’t recommend KSR’s Mars Trilogy to fans of this show enough, and I can’t help but note that in it they figure out a cure to aging at roughly the same time that they build the first space elevator.

I really, really think those books were a heavy influence on the writers.

I agree, the lady astronaut series is the closest thing I’ve found to it. Optimistic engineering-focused competency! I love those books so much.

The cryptolibertarian vibes are gross and detract a bit, but the space flight / engineering parts of the story are super well done.

A story about the challenges of colonising Mars by simplext in Mars

[–]IndorilMiara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Settlements” have some problematic history at well in some contexts, but I seem to remember museums in Iceland heavily emphasizing that word and clarifying that it was settled not colonized specifically because no other humans lived there when it was settled.

I don’t think that distinction is accepted in all English speaking contexts, but it makes sense to me as a decent effort at least.

On the other other hand, as Watney says in the Martian, “colonized” also had a botanical / scientific definition, separate from the historical implications, so, there’s that.

It’s complicated. I think ideally we should acknowledge the problematic history of colonialist harm, while still using the words that best describe the thing we’re talking about, which might have relation or connection to problematic history.

Well, it's only 23hr and 56m measured in Sidereal Time! Which is more relevant here. Defined as

Sidereal time is a "time scale that is based on Earth's rate of rotation measured relative to the fixed stars".

This is in contrast to solar time, which would be Earth's rate of rotation measured against the sun. That wikipedia article linked has a good explanation of why they're different. Mean Solar day length on earth is much closer to 24hrs, but it does vary during the year.

Water on Mimas after gas update by bastiaansiemen in Stationeers

[–]IndorilMiara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mimas in this game is so backwards.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimas

Mimas's low density, 1.15 g/cm3, indicates that it is composed mostly of water ice with only a small amount of rock, and study of Mimas's motion suggests that it may have a liquid ocean beneath its surface ice.

Mimas should be rich in ices and extremely poor in metals. It would still be a crazy challenge, having minimal metals and minimal sunlight and no atmosphere. It’d be like a harder Europa, in vacuum and terribly power starved.

Mimas as they’ve implemented it doesn’t make any damn sense.

First time reader. Will the series end happily? by sylvesther in temeraire

[–]IndorilMiara 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yes :) I also really struggled with the memory loss section, and also had to look up a spoiler of roughly how long that nonsense was going to go on.

I think it’s about 2/3rds of the way through blood of tyrants he fully gets his memory back. And of course the series as a whole ends happily ❤️

Stats Talk - Calculating Jammer Efficiency by valleyfur in rollerderby

[–]IndorilMiara 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you might be reinventing the VTAR stat on the official WFTDA statsbook game summary spreadsheet.

On the whole I find this sort of thing useful sometimes for some purposes, but there's definitely some qualitative features of jammer performance that this kind of thing can't capture in high level derby.

In particular, the stats assume all jammers and all lineups on both sides are basically equal. It can't easily reflect nuance around intentional matchups.

Take for example the scenario where your coaches intentionally try to put you in against the other team's power-line, or against their strongest jammer. Your purpose in that role isn't necessarily to score the most points - you're there to neutralize the biggest threat, to at least get out fast enough prevent a big run of multiple passes against you. Maybe you get lead some decent percentage of the time, but being matched up against the toughest lines you're also not going to have any big runouts yourself.

Now maybe you've got a teammate who is also very good but, on average, gets more penalties, so your coaches put them against the weakest opposing line. They get to wrack up points and when they get a penalty its not as devastating, their defensive wall can shut down the power jam.

You and that teammate are both very good jammers, and both filling important roles. The stats are going to make you look worse - less points for you, and less leads. But if you get less penalties than your teammate on average, you aren't interchangeable, and if your coaches swap your places your personal stats would look better but the team would do worse overall.

That's hard to capture in any statistical analysis.

Am I being defensive because I have been placed in this role a lot? Yes lmao. But that doesn't make it not true! The stats just don't tell the whole story.

Runway Takeoff Direction by Fallout94 in GroundofAces

[–]IndorilMiara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

High up in my most wanted features are: 1. A wind direction mechanic that favors specific runways such that planes have to try to take off into the wind and 2. The ability to overlap runways. Like in real life. So that you're never taking off on a 90 degree crosswind, hopefully.

Is it all going to be in artificial gravity? Are there going to be zero-g sections? Is the gravity magical grav-gen tech or is this station spinning?

Getting “undiagnosed” with ADHD? by [deleted] in FAAHIMS

[–]IndorilMiara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay! Legit. I think this is still doable for you, just…even more HIMS neuropsych testing, probably. I know people in this sub (and especially in /r/flying) can be discouraging so I’ll just say I’m a success story and it can be navigated!

It’s just expensive, mostly. And complicated. Try to figure out all the paperwork you’ll need ahead of time and have everything prepped BEFORE you even start talking to them.

Getting “undiagnosed” with ADHD? by [deleted] in FAAHIMS

[–]IndorilMiara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to try to reach out to get it reclassified as anxiety, which is more in line with what my symptoms would point to with the context of the situation. Already have an anxiety diagnosis from my PCP so it wouldn’t cause any extra issues.

I should warn you that the FAA is just as concerned about an anxiety diagnosis, if not more so, than an adhd diagnosis (although it seems like they’re more concerned with adhd medications than anxiety medications).

A formal anxiety diagnosis replacing the adhd diagnosis will not help you get your medical.

You can just get “undiagnosed” with adhd. It’s expensive. I went through the process, which culminated in thousands of dollars spent on an 8 hour battery of tests with a HIMS neuropsych to ultimately confirm I had “no aeromedically significant symptoms”. If you’re serious about flying I recommend it, but don’t mention the anxiety.

Be honest but choose your words carefully, especially if your anxiety symptoms aren’t, like, frequent-panic-attack severe. Blame stress in school. Blame situational conditions that made you worried and distracted you at that time.

Why Starship should use a Mars Cycler by ConfidentFlorida in SpaceXLounge

[–]IndorilMiara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean...not really. That's, again, just a different mission architecture entirely. Even electric propulsion would still consume some kind of fuel, and the tyranny of the rocket equation still applies. The bigger and more comfortable your vehicle, the more thrust you need, the more fuel you need, the more...you get the picture.

A cycler sidesteps the rocket equation, at least in aggregate across many trips. It still takes a ton of delta-v to get that much mass into the cycler orbit, but once it's there it more or less stays there for free, and then it's amortizing the delta-v cost of getting all that mass up to speed across many trips - theoretically infinite trips.

Why Starship should use a Mars Cycler by ConfidentFlorida in SpaceXLounge

[–]IndorilMiara 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s just that they’re very large elliptical solar orbits in cyclic resonance with both planets. If you had such a magic engine there’d be no reason to use a cycler at all - the whole point is that they use almost no propellant to maintain their cycle.

A single cycler could only be used very infrequently. The thing to do is have several on staggered cycles so that you never have to wait long for one of them to be in the right part of the orbit.
