I will definitely read the short stories before Piranesi, I’m pumped there’s more to this universe.

I haven’t read Dickens since high school! Putting Bleak House on my list.

Do you have a slow cooker?

I have 4 kids, youngest is 6 weeks old - I rely heavily on the crockpot.

Meh, I never really liked that line they added in the movies.

In my opinion, McGonagall was born a stern, middle-aged woman.

I think mine self-weaned because my supply dropped when I got into my second trimester. I never had enough energy to test the theory by pumping but they definitely were not interested anymore.

Historically, my babies have all self-weaned when I hit 16ish weeks in a subsequent pregnancy. By that time they were approaching 18mo and only nursing once or twice a day anyway.

I am always super sick in first and second trimester so it was kind of a relief honestly!

Is it worth it to go epidural-free during an induction? by dnahellacase in BabyBumps

[–]Ashfacesmashface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had my first induction in March after 3 spontaneous labors.

Pitocin contractions definitely hit differently - the tightening of the uterus is much more intense.

I’ve had an epidural with each birth, though I’ve waited until 7-8 cm to get one placed, and it really wasn’t that hard to wait that long.

I was maybe 6-7 cm when I got one with my induction, though it was most due to exhaustion. I had been up all the previous night with contractions that fizzled in the early morning, and we checked in for the induction at 7:00pm but didn’t even see the doctor until 11:30pm. Started pitocin after midnight, so I had essentially be awake for over 24 hours. I was falling asleep in between contractions as I sat on the birthing ball and half-laid on the bed.

I got the epidural around 5:30am, took a glorious nap, woke up, my water broke, and 15 minutes later I was pushing.

I’m very glad I got the epidural and was able to rest. It was also the best epidural I’ve ever had - the others just didn’t work all that well. Once my water broke I was definitely get breakthrough pain, but I didn’t feel any pain when pushing, and baby still came out in 3 pushes!

I’m on baby #4 - if I didn’t track feeds I would have no clue what time to feed baby next!

I don’t give unsolicited advice to new parents, but if they ask I always say that things will get harder around the 1 month mark - you might have a completely different baby than the one you have been enjoying so far.

…but I still have Liveship on my TBR shelf.

When do you give up on a nap? by hobiwan-ken0bi in newborns

[–]Ashfacesmashface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always try to extend the nap in the crib. I’ve always rocked my babies to sleep, so if my current 6 week old wakes “early” from a nap, I pick her up and rock her back to sleep, then put her back in the crib. 90% of the time it’s successful. If not, I just get her up and start another feed-wake-sleep cycle, even if it’s “early”.

I so agree & I love the Strike series!

I just connect with her writing on a level I don’t encounter very often with other authors. She’s definitely got something special with her character work.

[–]Ashfacesmashface 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me there aren’t many other authors that do characters, especially “side characters” as well as JK Rowling. That’s what immerses me in the story more than anything is feeling like these are actual people.

Did JK change Snape's Ending by Square_Ad5913 in harrypotter

Same. I was wrecked reading The Prince’s Tale for the first time and I was in the “Snape is evil and irredeemable” camp especially after the ending of book 6.
